Carlsbad Caverns Carlsbad Caverns National Park is in the Guadalupe Mountains, which run from west Texas into southeastern New Mexico. There are 113 known caves. Tallgrass Prairie Tallgrass prairie* once stretched from what is now Indiana to Kansas, from Canada to Texas. Now most of it is gone. *Prairie is a habitat made of grasses. Tallgrass prairies have grasses taller than a horse. Spectacular Beauty This Land Is Your Land There are 6 million acres of wilderness in Denali National Park. photos courtesy National Park Service Death Valley National Park is known for its badlands. Badlands are areas where little grows, but where wind and time have carved fantastic sculptures into the land. Although these islands are surrounded by the sea, explorers named them “dry” because they have no fresh water for drinking. The Carlsbad Caverns were not formed by running water, as were most limestone caves. They were formed by dripping sulfuric acid. The caverns are also known for their large colonies of swallows and bats. This prairie is at Homestead National Monument in Nebraska. Most of the remaining prairie is in Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas.
