Today we welcome Ashford Rugby Football Club. Ashford Rugby Union Football Club was formed in 1885 when Ashford became affiliated to the Kent County RFU and they also joined the England Rugby Football Union at that time. Back in the day players wore “caps” during the match, an Ashford match report from 1885 reads; “One player got a try by dashing his cap in the face of the opposing full-back. When we pushed in the scrummage we (or at any rate some of us) faced our own goal and pushed with our backs.” I am not sure these tactics will help either side today but it is good to note our game was as full of character back then as it is today! Ashford 1st XV play in London League South East 2 and the club run three senior sides, women & girls rugby plus a strong junior section. Our visitors are, like Medway RFC, a strong Community Club and I am pleased to report Ashford have recently refurbished their Clubhouse. We are continuing to raise funds to build our New Clubhouse and the Buxton Weekend is set for 8th, 9th & 10th May 2015 when we will have a comedy night, a touch tournament, a sponsored walk and some charity rugby, plus the Grand draw. Please see me for your Grand Draw tickets where x2 tickets to see Ed Sheeran at Wembley in July is one of our fantastic prizes. Thanks go to Jez Saxby who has organised a Club Lunch today. The idea is we pay £5 per head & enjoy a social lunch before a great game of Rugby! Medway have enjoyed a good run of League results lately and we will have to be at our very best to take any points today. Do meet & greet our visitors from Ashford, please help to make them feel welcome at Priestfields, Rochester. We thank all of our Sponsors today, especially our match day Sponsor, the Bullock family. Ade & Tracy have both been the Club’s Treasurer and both James & Max play within our youth structure. Ade’s company has very generously contributed to the Grand Draw prizes and also is a position sponsor. We could not operate without our Sponsors, please do thank Ade & Tracy & do help Ade with his choice of man of the match today. Do thank our Sponsors when you meet them. If you can sponsor our Club please contact me. Please note on Saturday 21st March 2015 England v France on the big screen, kick off at 5pm when the Club will be turned into a brassiere with wine & cheese & please save the date & make it a Club Social!

Finally, do support the referee today and enjoy your afternoon. Both Clubs are wished the best of luck, especially those wearing Scarlet & Gold. I will see you in the Clubhouse. Now………………….C’mon Medway!

Bullocks Touring would be a family business but Ade’s wife and children refuse to work for him.

As an absent husband and father, he travels the world with bands looking after the business side of things and tries to make out that it is really hard work, when in fact it is actually an unending trail of drug taking and strip clubs. After a while Ade is either sacked or sent home on doctors orders and likes to spend as much time at Medway RFC as possible, which is very much like being on tour but without the luxury.

Once he gets fed up with people asking him for tickets he convinces another band to take him away to the circus.

There are x3 volunteers in the cohort to support but we need a lead person please – contact Mark Marriott if you are interested.

We seek a 100 Club co-ordinator. We have more people now joining the group and it requires someone to help co-ordinate this important revenue stream. – Please contact Tracy Bullock to confirm your interest.

A video camera person is sought to record the 1st XV matches at home. The equipment is easy to use. Please contact Peter Rann to confirm your interest.

Finally, 2 volunteers are sought to assist on 1st XV match days with movement of furniture, putting out & collecting in advertising hoardings & generally assist Mel Collins on the big League games. Please contact Peter Rann.

We are pleased to announce the signing of winger Dan Hamilton from Blackheath FC. Dan is a former County under 20 winger who hails from Bromley. An excellent addition to the squad.

On the injury front, Charlie Wardzynski, Alex O’Leary and Sam Catlin have all come through their comeback games and once again compete for a 1st XV place. We hope to have Owain Fussell back playing next week as well.

Anyone seeking a new gym membership should see the excellent offer from our sponsors The Village Hotel which has been extended.

P R I E S T F I E L D S Alex O’Leary is a 26 year old Tight Head Prop and has joined the club this season from Old Elthamians. Having moved out of London into Kent he chose Medway as the club to join and we are very pleased to have signed such an experienced player. He is actually the oldest player in the Medway side! A product of the Chiselhurst & Sidcup Grammar School, Alex went on to study at Loughborough University where he also played as a student.

Alex works for Arena International as a Sponsorship Sales Manager and is married to his lovely wife Samantha. She supports his love of rugby and can be seen with him at many of the matches. He is an ardent lover of ‘proper beer’ and is keen to play rugby as well as he can, for as long as he can.

Alex has made an impressive start to the season and is a very welcome addition to the 1st XV Squad and the Medway club as a whole.

THE FOREIGN LEGION – PART ONE

Two of the earliest player from elsewhere were the Warren brothers, F and G from Dublin. Both had trained at the Royal College of Surgeons and operating at St Bartholomew’s Hospital here in Rochester.

Sept 1938 - Rochester RFC held an enthusiastic trial when last season’s Touring Team defeated the Rest by 12 points to 3. Buxton, Langford, Bliss and Ariel scored tries. Waine replied for the rest. Some good rugby was seen and amongst the newcomers playing, Thomas, a fly-half from South Wales.

In their opening match of the season Rochester registered a fine 32-0 victory over Aylesford Paper Mills. Rochester showed some great promise. Norman Parkes (right), as vice-captain, led the forwards well and Ian Wilkie (far right) (Scottish trialist), as hooker, was his usual success. Norman (Doc) Parkes was from Dublin and worked at St Bart’s Hospital. He then took up refereeing and by the end of the decade was officiating at full international level. Ian Wilkie worked for Shorts Bros, the aeroplane manufacturers down on the Esplanade in Rochester.

The club’s first Welshman to captain the 1st XV was Roy Molyneux in 1953-53. Roy was one of several players at that time employed at Wingets in Strood and he performed in the second or back row. Roy (far left) in session with Jim Fray (who was not from Wales) and Don Payne.

The 1960s saw the arrival of two Welsh teachers, Dai Morgan (left) and Ken Richards (right), at Woodlands School. As well as playing for Rochester RFC they introduced a long line of young players to rugby and from the school to the club. Ken had been good enough in his youth to play for Maesteg RFC and like all good Welshmen played in a trial for his native country.

Frank Price (left), a flying winger, Rochester joined in the late 1960s. He flirted with the higher teams before become a key member of the Old Holcs XV who had the important task of encouraging and educating the club’s younger players in the finer arts of the game.

Another man from the Emerald Isle was Mike Devine, a noted story-teller who was even good enough to play for the first team. He later took on responsibility for the Pickwicks (our 6th XV at the time) who for some reason acquired the nick-name of the Thick Micks!!

Into the 1970s and a flurry of Celts appeared. Colum Meekin (far left) (an Irishman from Hull) who was followed by Brian Wolfe, yet another bloody teacher. Colum was renowned for his

side-step and still lives locally. Jim Hillier and Dewi Parry (left), a speedy winger came from across the Severn Valley. Jim (right) took on many roles within the club and was chairman when the main pitch was re-levelled in the late 1980s. Before that, there was a 12’ drop from left to right – up the slope, against the wind in the second-half was always hard going.

Also arriving at Priestfields at around this time were Dave Donald (standing) and Henry Heggie (kneeling) all the way from Scotland and both very useful players indeed. Dave was an excellent full-back while Henry, a talented winger held the club try-scoring record for almost twenty years. Both travelled down for the club’s Past Players Reunion in December.

Medway are always keen to welcome back former players, so if you know of any that we may not have been in touch with recently please let JezSaxby, Ian Dance or Brian Wolfe know.

MRFCYOUTH Skills sessions

The coaching coordinator Steve Young with the assistance of senior players and coaches continues to run a full range of skills programmes within the youth section (boys & girls). These include: scrum, rucking, kicking, scrum halves, fly halves, outside halves, backline attack/defence/, back row and more. Medway believe this is the most comprehensive in-house skills training programme at any club in Kent and is undoubtedly helping players acquire the physical and decision making skills they will need to make the transition to senior rugby. If you have any queries please contact Steve. Match results Under 17s drew the Kent Cup Quarter Final with Canterbury 5-5. Unfortunately for us as the away team Canterbury progress to the next round. We are also entered into the National Bowl competition by virtue of being ranked in the top 4 in the county. Still lots to play for.

Under 16s lost narrowly in the Kent Plate Quarter-finals away at Gravesend despite dominating possession. In recent weeks they have secured good wins in friendly fixtures against Folkestone and Thanet, and take on Ashford this coming weekend. Under 15s have had two good recent results with the B squad beating Folkestone 77 - 12 at home and the A squad overcoming Canterbury away by 22 - 7. Both performances saw some of the best rugby played yet by each squad. There is healthy competition between players with a good number moving between the squads and a great team spirit. The under 14s had very solid wins against Upminster and Folkstone in recent weeks with the team playing some of its best rugby ever. In the last two weeks the squad has played friendlies against the under 15s in preparation for the Kent cup this coming weekend.

The Girls U15 squad are growing in confidence and skills under the guidance of Lee Barnes as well as many others who have been kind enough to assist. The Girls have progressed to the Area Final of the National Cup, which they will play on the 8th March…(awaiting confirmation of opponents & venue due to an appeal)! We have a strong squad of around 18

Medway members and usually 4 Rochford members…

Our next fixture is on the 8th Feb at Thanet Wanderers…which will finish with a social event involving both teams and parents. Note- score below should read that Sutton & Epsom scored 12…
