Class 2R

On Tuesday I had a number of students show me some excellent work they had completed in mathematics from 2R. It was lovely to see them very excited about the work they had completed. I’d like to acknowledge Mrs Hunt in leading our staff in understanding the

new mathematics framework our staff are under-taking this year called ‘A Learning Place, A Teach-ing Place’. We have a strong mentoring culture with-in our school with staff learning from one another.

Shout Out

I’d like to recognise a beautiful act that one of our students displayed last week. Janaya do-nated her hard-earned pocket money to sup-port the World’s Great-est Shave. Money raised from this event supports the Leukaemia Founda-tion. Our school is very proud of her independence, selflessness and kindness. What a great model she is for us all!

Regional Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to Beau and Alannah who recent-ly represented our school at the regional swimming carnival. They swam extremely well and demonstrated a pos-itive attitude all day. At this level they were among some very tough opposi-tion.

Merit AwardsLast week our PBL focus was about being resilient. It was lovely to see students being recognised for showing this necessary life skill. Also, during our as-sembly 5/6R performed an item. They had obviously rehearsed which allowed them to perform the song ‘Anywhere’ very professionally.

Pick Up and Drop Offs

I would like to remind everyone again about their need to be responsible in parking their cars outside of the school. We explicitly teach our students how to be responsible through PBL and as parents we should want to be good role models by demonstrating this expectation for our children. Please make sure you are not parking your car over driveways, having your children walk through the service station or have them playing unattended. This also extends to stu-dents who are catching the bus. A large number of children do not have their Opal cards. Students are expected to tap on and off. Apart from this being a

requirement of bus travel, the data is capsulated to determine the need for bus runs. At a recent police forum I attended, fare evasion is one of the biggest of-fences committed by young people (between the ages of 14 and 18) in the Raymond Terrace area. It made me think ‘Is this number so high because students did not use their Opal card in primary school’. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring we are all doing our part in the community by being good citizens.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Woolworths Earn and Learn is coming back again this year. Mr Wells registered our school this week. A box will be kept in the office for when the supermarket be-ings handing out the stickers. In 2017 our school was able to receive a variety of equipment to assist our stu-dents and their learning. If you shop at Woolworths it would be greatly appreciated if you could collect the stickers when they start handing them out again.

Medowie School History

Recently I received some history about Medowie Pub-lic School and thought it would be nice to share it with everyone. The first teacher of Medowie Public School was a lady named Miss Sara Cole. She presided over the school for seventeen years. She came to Australia with her parents from Ireland and settled in Toma-go. Medowie Public School opened nearly 125 years ago. The site of the original school is at the Bounda-ry Road entrance and has a centenary plaque to mark the sport. The school was originally called New Gl-

Harmony Day

Our school is officially celebrating Harmony Day tomorrow. All students will participate in con-structing a togetherness tree. Each student will create a leaf hand that will be applied to the tree. As well as this activity our students are engaging in school language based activities which extends from today through to the end of the next week. We have 7 different languages identified in our immediate school community. These are Finn-ish, Mandarin, Polish, Macedonian, Vietnamese, Hindi and the Aboriginal dialect of the Wori-mi people, Gathang. In regards to Gathang, the United Nations General Assembly have declared this year as the International year of Indigenous Languages. Whilst we have specific Gathang language lessons with Sharon Edgar-Jones, Har-mony Day is a great way to raise awareness of the crucial role languages play in people’s daily lives. In Australia, of the estimated original 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languag-es, only around 120 are still spoken. Each class is trying to spotlight one of the languages each day to celebrate the diversity we have in our own backyards. Our staff would encourage families to ask their children what words and/or cultural in-formation they can share with you over the next 7 days.

SRE in 2019.Welcome to the 2019 School year and a special welcome to families new to the school. This piece is to inform you about SRE (Scripture) for 2019.

Christian Special Religious Education (SRE) classes introduce children to Jesus, the Bible and Christianity. There are many benefits of choosing to allow your child to attend SRE. SRE helps parents educate their children in matters of faith.

SRE encourages children to embrace the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would have them treat you.

Bible stories enrich our understanding of the English language and literature, ex-plore the geography and history of the Middle East

SRE illustrate the Christian values underlying Australian society.

SRE classes are a place to ask the spiritual questions like: Is God real? Can I see God?

The SRE teachers are volunteers who are authorised by their local churches, have Child Protection Training, have had a Working With Children Check and are completing approved SRE training.

What do SRE teachers teach? As your children progress through their school years, material suitable to their development stage will be taught. The material used has been approved by the Department of Education and Training. The major stories and themes of the bible are covered. Stories and storytelling, songs, activity sheets, games, craft, drama and prayer may be used in lessons. The moral/ethical codes of the bible are studied. Also included is information about ancient culture, creation care, history and modern day language.

The curriculum is bible-based and SRE teachers encourage children to actively engage with the lessons and interactive technology, music and a variety of other teaching mate-rials may be used to capture the children’s interest.

Children can attend either Catholic SRE (Vynette Shrimpton is the Co-ordinator) or Non-Denominational SRE (Debbie Gill is the Co-ordinator) and families do not have to be attending a Church to attends SRE.Thank you for the privilege of teaching your child this year.
