KISSING FROGS I, like all my fellow buyers, have to kiss a lot of frogs to come up with an enticing selection for you to enjoy. Bordeaux, with its 10,000 properties and in excess of 50 different appellations, can be a confusing region for wine lovers. It is my job (and great pleasure) to establish and build relations with trusted partners who can consistently come up with excellent wines, and also to sift through the many samples that are put in front of me annually in order to identify new potential suppliers.

This offer features the wines that passed our stringent tests. They come both from well-respected, long-term partners, many of whom we have worked with for decades, and some recent discoveries. They have been chosen based on their readiness for drinking and the value for money they offer. I very much hope that you enjoy them as much as I have.

LALANDE- DE-POMEROL– THE CLUE’S IN THE NAMELalande-de-Pomerol adjoins the vineyards of Pomerol, and its best wines can match the quality of its more illustrious neighbour. The finest soils are similar to those found on the Pomerol plateau producing wines of similar generosity, mainly from merlot. Our Lalande-de-Pomerol mixed case on the back page showcases the wines of three excellent properties.

Château de Musset, Cuvee Premiere, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2010A rich right bank claret from the excellent 2010 vintage which is starting to show its true colours. Perfumed, dark-fruit character on the nose with sleek, ripe tannins. Now to 2019. 14%ref TC-CS8801 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen

The dry whites of Bordeaux are often overlooked and undervalued, probably a result of the often poor quality, thin wines that were the norm 20–30 years ago. Today the Entre-Deux-Mers and environs can be a source of excellent-value, crisp dry whites.

NEW Château Martinon Entre-Deux-Mers 2016 Jérome Trolliet’s family has lived at Château Martinon for generations and this is a benchmark example of unoaked Entre-Deux-Mers white with lovely freshness and lift. Château Mont-Pérat Blanc, Bordeaux 2013 The wine is a blend of 78% sauvignon, 20% semillon and 2% muscadelle that we bought en primeur, and which we have held back until ready for drinking. ROOM FOR SECONDS? Bordeaux lovers wishing to enjoy a flavour of a particular property but without paying the (sometimes) substantial price for the grand vin, should consider buying the second wines. They are made to reflect the character of the senior sibling, but are approachable sooner and are kinder on the wallet.

A wine of considerable charm and polish, with the generous, fleshy character of the 2012 vintage. Now to 2019. 13.5%ref TC-CB4581 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen

Clarets from the less well-known (and therefore less expensive) regions of Bordeaux shone in recent tastings. Some are new purchases, recently shipped from Bordeaux, whilst others have been maturing in our cellars and are now perfect to enjoy.

BORDEAUX AND BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR

Château Moncets, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2010 The Moncets vineyard is on the border with Pomerol proper, and its quality shines through. The blend is majority merlot with 30% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon, 20% aged in new barrels. Real depth and ripeness. Now to 2022. 13.5%ref TC-CS7891 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen

NEW Château Les Vieux Ormes, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2012 The Moueix family, leading lights for right bank wines, took over the management of this estate in 2012 and the wine has benefitted from their input and expertise. 80% merlot, 10% each of cabernets franc and sauvignon, this is dense and generous with plenty of dark-fruit character. Now to 2021. 13.5%ref TC-CS9151 £15.50 bottle £186 dozen

We have long recommended the wines of Bordeaux’s satellite appellations. The wines can give their more expensive neighbours a very good run for their money, displaying similar character but at considerably more modest prices.

Château Les Tours de Seguy, Côtes de Bourg 2008 This well-sited, 12-hectare property continues to make authentic and impressive wines. The 2008 is a fully mature merlot which displays notes of cigar box and cinnamon. For lovers of traditional claret. 13%ref TC-CB4121 £7.25 bottle £87 dozen

Château de la Grave Caractère, Côtes de Bourg 2012 A property that we have followed for over 30 years. The consistency of quality is testament to the hard work of the Bassereau family. Typically Bourg in character, with a certain grip, but with the flesh and charm that are hallmarks of the 2012 vintage. Now to 2020. 13.5%ref TC-CB4811 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

Château Monconseil Gazin, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux 2013 Jean-Michel Baudet has fashioned a deliciously supple wine in 2013. Fruity and charming blend of two-thirds merlot with cabernet sauvignon and a splash of malbec for added depth. 13%ref TC-CB5021 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Madame Château de Pitray, Côtes de Castillon 2010 Ripe and succulent with splendid richness and depth, this is finer than many Saint-Emilions at more than twice the price. Jean de Boigne has revitalised his family estate and this wine, the best quarter of his crop, is a snip at the price. Now to 2021. 14%ref TC-CB3701 £18 bottle £216 dozen

Château d’Aiguilhe, Côtes de Castillon 2007 The 2007 Aiguilhe was deservedly voted a Society Wine Champion in last year’s series of blind tastings. The property is one of the appellation’s most impressive and this blend of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc shows lovely balance, medium-bodied plummy fruit and a long, mellow finish. Now to 2021. 14%ref TC-CB4711 £20 bottle £240 dozen

Mainly semillon with sauvignons blanc and gris, and a touch of muscadelle. 12.5%ref TC-BW5761 £8.25 bottle £99 dozen

Château Bel Air Perponcher Blanc, Bordeaux 2016 Produced by the highly respected Despagne family in Entre-Deux-Mers, this is a crisp, dry blend of 70% semillon, 27% sauvignon blanc and 3% muscadelle for added character. The wine can be matched with an array of fish and seafood dishes. Classy white Bordeaux. 12% ref TC-BW5791 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

Château Argadens Blanc, Bordeaux 2016 From the Sichel family’s own property, which is sustainably farmed, this is a zesty and fresh blend of 65% sauvignon blanc and 35% semillon, a little of which is barrel-fermented to round out the palate. 12%ref TC-BW5781 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

Château Thieuley Blanc, Bordeaux 2015Aromatic and elegant classic white blend of semillon and sauvignons blanc and gris from the delightful Courselle sisters in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. 13%ref TC-BW5471 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Château de la Grave Blanc ‘Grains Fins’, Côtes de Bourg 2015 The Bassereau family makes tiny quantities of this very original blend of 60% semillon and 40% colombard. Aromatic and crisp, with a creamy note thanks to ageing in oak. 13.5%.ref TC-BW5711 £9.75 bottle £117 dozen

Château Mont-Pérat Blanc, Bordeaux 2013 The wine is a blend of 78% sauvignon, 20% semillon and 2% muscadelle that we bought en primeur, and which we have held back until ready for drinking. The wine displays hints of lime and lanolin on the nose, and is medium-bodied on the palate, with good underlying acidity. Match with white fish or seafood. 13% ref TC-BW5051 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

Le Clos de Reynon, Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux 2012 This second wine from the Dubourdieu’s Château Reynon is 100% succulent merlot, with around 20% new oak. A wine of considerable charm and polish, with the generous, fleshy character of the 2012 vintage. Now to 2019. 13.5%ref TC-CB4581 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen

Chapelle de Potensac, Médoc 2010 Potensac stood out in a comprehensive tasting of the 2010 vintage a couple of years ago. Merlot-dominated, 31% cabernet sauvignon, plus 12% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot add structure and finesse. Now to 2022. 13.5%ref TC-CM17681 £14.50 bottle £174 dozen

Héritage de Chasse-Spleen, Haut-Médoc 2010 Héritage is the second wine of Chasse-Spleen, the largest and most famous property in Moulis. The 2010 has fresh and appealing fruit character on the palate, is medium-bodied and has soft, fine-grained tannins. Now to 2021. 13.5%ref TC-CM17811 £17 bottle £204 dozen
