Milwaukee and the surrounding Midwest has many faces in music and is known for the music festivals. It brings people together who all have interest in one thing: music. Medley Threads is based out of Milwaukee and is run by the music lovers that want to share their appreciation for all local musicians/music. They created the Medley Threads Music Festival to raise awareness for local causes while bringing different music genres together in one place. For one weekend in May, Medley Threads hopes to expose Milwaukee to it’s musical roots and to benefit those who need support.

DIFFERENT MUSICSAME CAUSE

JUNIPER TAR

Milwaukee band Juniper Tar established itself as one of the city’s finest purveyors of gentle folk-rock with 2008’s To The Trees, a spaced-out pastoral record designed for late summer nights spent polishing off whiskey bottles on the back porch. It’s no surprise that the new The Howl Street EP—named after Shane Hochstetler’s eternally busy Bay View studio Howl Street Recordings, where the record was made—is similarly lovely, boasting raw and ragged harmonies on the rampaging “Birds In Trees” and an under-stated sense of drama on the slowly unfolding lead-off track “Interstates.” But Juniper Tar has really stepped its game up in concert, unfurling a surly three-guitar attack that explodes the group’s delicate melodies in all kinds of thrilling directions. NORTHERN ROOM

Formed in the Autumn on 2004 by Andrew Jonathan, Michael Morgan, and brothers Micah and Tony Olla, the quartet were inspired by such diverse genres as shoegaze, new wave, power pop, and indie-rock. Combining a layered instrumental foundation with driving rhythms and melodic vocals, Northern Room spent the next six months crafting their unique sound. Then, in the Spring of 2005, they fled their home state of Wisconsin and recorded the Last Embrace EP in Nashville, Tennessee. (2)

INTO ARCADIA

Spring 2008 Exploring the struggle between childhood’s innocence and the corrupting nature of coming of age, Into Arcadia’s debut e.p. “Maps For Children” follows lyrical narratives riding waves of joy and despair, coupled with mournful guitars, ethereal synths, and propulsive rhythms. (3)

THE ETIQUETTE

The Etiquette are from Milwaukee and these happy days are yours and mine. Ages... was pressed into my palm like it needed slipping under the tounge - and what a fix it is. Six brilliant songs lashed down in what sounds like a firestorm of spiteful hate and last-gasp, desperate love. Recorded like a demo, it barrages your heart full-tilt because of the escape from modern productions deodorising confines. ’Giver’ is a one-hit wondrous tune, sounding like the Foo Fighters remembering to have fun again. ’Geared To Nowhere’ revs in sludge but takes your trebly head into the stratosphere. ’Autumn Song’ is the centerpiece with a chorus to bellow till your lungs bleed. Closers ’Hometown’, ’Longtime’, and ’No Suprises’ take on the spirits of Chavez, Beekeeper, and prime Dinosaur and jackbox them into fab new three-minute odysseys of infinite reach. (4)

FEVER MARLENEFever Marlene’s “Red Fire” without aggrandizing their efforts to support a Milwaukee band. They just slip the track into the playlist between, say, a classic Nine Inch Nails cut and the new Fall Out Boy single. Striking a stylish balance between the cool composure of ’80s British groups like the Stone Roses and the Jesus and Mary Chain and the visceral immediacy of the White Stripes, “Red Fire” could easily fool listeners into as-suming Fever Marlene are the latest Spin-approved big thing out of New York, not a local duo still courting record labels. The group’s debut album, Civil War—a record filled with affable, Big Star-esque power-pop, often with a tender, electronic ambiance that “Red Fire” doesn’t hint at—will also be available at Atomic Records, Exclusive Records and www.fevermarlene.com. HAIL ARCHER

Ex-Hopesfall member Andy Balfour and his brother Adam have united to form Hail Archer. Starting out as Forth Effect, these guys have been at it for years working the scene in Wisconsin. With their atmospheric soundscapes, raw vocals and dueling guitars, no one member will be snaring the spotlight. Fans of The Receiving End Of Sirens, Circa Survive, and As Cities Burn have been taking notice of Hail Archer. They have released an EP and have been scheduling some U.S. and Canadian tours. (6)

THE VANISHING ART

Clever and witty, but above all: free - free from convention and obligation. Free to experiment with our own ideas and passions. The Vanishing Art confront life with energy; and do not seem to be at its mercy. Watch them; observe them with the detachment of a zoologist examining a rare species of insect. At times, their performances can be shocking and unpredictable. The best one can do is stand back and look for order and solace and meaning that is their art... The Vanishing Art. (7)

THE RESPONSE

The Response was formed in the summer of 2000 by roomates Peter P.(Spankchild) and Richard Bowman in Milwaukee, WI. Their summer collaboration resulted in four songs and in September they approached their friend Mikey B. (Men From Mars / The Blasphematics) to fill in on the low end. Jesus (Next In Line) dusted off his drumsticks and by October the line-up was complete. The band began playing shows in December and within the year had garnered attention and praise opening for the likes of The Faint, Har Mar Superstar, The Figgs, The Gadjits, Openhand and The Starlight Mints. Their melodic indie-rock with metal overtones coupled with unrelentingly energetic performances attracted growing crowds. (8)

RED KNIFE LOTTERY

On its 2005 EP So Much Drama, Red Knife Lottery shifts easily among epic rock, hardcore, metal, and countless other moods, crafting a mini soundtrack to teen angst within each song. The Milwaukee group’s soft-loud dynamics are punctuated by singer Ashley Chapman’s ability to go from blasé drawl to ferocious roar. After several years away from the studio, the band recently completed a new record, Soiled Soul And Rapture to be released August 11th 2009 on Uprising Records. (9)
