By no means is Caritas intending to pre-empt the Church on the validity of the Apparitions. They are privaterevelation awaiting the Churchs judgment. Because the Queen of Peace Apparitions are on going and not yetover, the Church has yet to rule on their authenticity. Caritas of Birmingham, the Community of Caritas, andall associated with them, realize and accept that the final authority regarding the Queen of Peace MedjugorjeApparitions rests with the Holy See in Rome. We at Caritas willingly submit to that judgment. Caritas ofBirmingham, the Community of Caritas and its mission are not connected to the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama. The Diocese of Birminghams official position on Caritas is neutral and holds us as Catholics in good standing.

considered an emergency? She said if her house was burn-ing down dont call her. What could she do about it while inMedjugorje? She said if her husband should pass away, still

dont call her, for there would be nothing she could do for himexcept pray, and she would be doing that already. Of courseshe was joking, but it illustrated the point clearly to her family;she was going on a pilgrimage and leaving behind everythingin order to give Jesus and Mary her full attention. She wantednothing to interfere with this. During her time in Medjugorje, everything else could wait.

You are pilgrimaging with what former pilgrims havestated year after year; that Caritas of Birmingham has the bestpilgrimages going to Medjugorje. That reputation is due tothe way we spiritually manage our pilgrims such as what fol-lows:

So often when we bring groups over to Medjugorje, thefirst or second question pilgrims ask is Where is a phone?Taking the advice of the woman above, Caritas strongly dis-courages the use of phones, e-mail, and Internet use dur-ing your stay in Medjugorje. Cell phones are forbidden onCaritas Pilgrimages. They are a destructive distraction toyour time in Medjugorje with Our Lady. It is a tool that satan

is able to use to keep your mind preoccupied with things athome that you simply do not need to be concerned or worriedabout. Your family is capable of surviving without you for theten days you will be gone. They may have their struggles andmay certainly have to make some sacrifices of their own untilyou return home again, but they will survive. This is a retreat,

and all distractions are to be blocked out.In general, the phone calls and e-mails that pilgrims

make home are not emergencies, but to check on things athome, or to share something that happened to them while in

Medjugorje. During your ten days in Medjugorje, Our Ladywants to lead each pilgrim to a new depth in prayer. She willbe unable to do this where there are interruptions and distrac-

tions that lead you away from this focus.

It is proven that satan will use any means to distract, upset, and worry you, because Medjugorje is a profound place ofpowerful graces. News from home, in most every case you willnot be able to do anything about, will harm your pilgrimageand serve to distract prayer. When you are not in prayer, you

are poor receivers of Gods love and His grace. Many of youare traveling this long way from home to come to Medjugorjeto receive these graces on behalf of family members who arein need of conversion. It is ironic that satan often will usefamily, whom you so desperately desire to help, as the meansto prevent you from receiving the graces from this holy placeof Our Ladys apparitions that will help them.

We state this clear strong direction to you because we haveseen too often in our pilgrimages the real harm cell phones, e-mail, and Internet use can cause in peoples conversions whilethey are in Medjugorje. We suggest that you speak to yourfamilies before you leave for Medjugorje and let them knowthat you will not be contacting them during your pilgrimage.

Tell them it is a retreat and that you will see them and talkto them when you return. It is for your own benefit that wesay this. If an emergency does arise, your family may contactCaritas of Birmingham in Alabama (BVM Pilgrimages). OurMission House in Medjugorje is in daily contact and we canrelay any necessary information to pilgrims in our groups.

However, we would like to stress that this would only be donein cases of a life and death emergency.

You are being daily offered in the prayers of the commu-nity, that through your pilgrimage to Medjugorje, you will re-

ceive abundant graces for yourselves and your families. Mayyour hearts be already prepared to receive these graces beforeyou even step foot in this village of Peace.

Again, if you desire the use of these things on your re-treat pilgrimage, you should seek another pilgrimage groupto travel with. Caritas/BVM Pilgrimages reserves the right toremove any member from the pilgrimage before and after thetrip begins.

    FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE:

It has been our goal to make our pilgrimages more efficientand affordable to all. For several years in a row weve offered thelowest price, full-package pilgrimage going to Medjugorje. As youknow, tax and gratuities are a necessary part of any travel. Ourexperience has shown us these necessary expenses can be an-noyances, which seem to always be creeping up throughout yourtravel. To make your pilgrimage as free from these worldly thingsas possible, we have arranged for all airport taxes, government

taxes, bus tips, and other gratuities and domestic help and all othersurcharges to be combined in one lump surcharge of $192.00 peroverseas ticket, and has been included in your price. This is againprovided as a convenience for you from BVM/Caritas Pilgrimagesof Caritas of Birmingham in our hope to give you the best pilgrim-age, free from annoyances, that you may be more concentrated inprayer.

    ABOUT YOUR PASSPORT:

You must have an up-to-date passport. A valid U.S. Pass-port is required for each traveler. Please do not pack this inyour luggage since you must present it at the first entry point.

*SUGGESTION: Have your passport number and the place and date of

issuance written down and kept in a separate place from your passportalong with a Xerox copy of your passport. Please send BVM/Caritas acopy along with your signed reservation form. Also, leave a copy at home(USA). This information is necessary for replacing your passport shouldit get lost. Replacement is required before returning to the U.S. If you aredelayed and miss the motor coach because of a lost passport, hotel reser-vation, plane ticket, etc., car rental or a taxi could be a very costly expensefor you, so its to your benefit to speed up a delayed process by followingthe advice above, and have a copy on hand, as well as a backup of your

    passport at home.

    ABOUT THE WEATHER/CLOTHING:

Temperatures in Medjugorje are approximately as follows:

    March 35F55F April 45F65F May 55F75FJune 60F95F July 65F95F August 65F90F

    September 55F85F October 50F70F November 40F55F

Please keep in mind that you are in an area of mountainsand the temperatures may feel somewhat lower than those listed. It is important that you remember that there is little or no airconditioning in the house where you will be staying, and althoughthere is heat, it is a likelihood of it not always working properly. Itis best to plan to layer your clothing so you may add or subtractaccording to need. Most months of the year have some rain, soyou will need to prepare for that as well. We suggest taking anextra change (or two) of clothing with you on the plane (carry-on

luggage) in the event your luggage is lost or damaged. Please be mindful that this is a religious place. The Church

officials have asked that no shorts or tank tops be worn in theChurch yard or in the two mountain areas which have specialreligious significance. Your dress will need to be comfortable. We suggest that ladies wear loose fitted slacks. Capri pants

and long knee-length shorts or skirts (not short) may be wornas well as comfortable walking shoes. SNEAKERS ARE AMUST for this trip. High-heels and dress-up clothing are un-necessary. It would be wise to take clothing that can be layered, with layers being added or removed as the temperature war-rants. An all-weather coat is a good idea. Remember the terrainhere is hilly and rocky and very dusty when dry, but very muddy

when wet. Some roads are not paved and the mode of transpor-tation for a good pilgrimage is foot power. Again, we stronglysuggest that you take an extra change of clothing with you inyour carry-on luggage in the event that your luggage is lost, delayed or damaged. This happens FREQUENTLY.

    ABOUT THE CURRENCY:

Travelers checks are not necessary in Medjugorje. Con-verting U.S. dollars to local currency is not necessary unless youwish to make it easier to figure your purchase. All shops acceptU.S. currency very easily and readily. It is recommended not tobring bills larger than a $20.00 bill, as proper change may notbe available. Credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, and AmericanExpress) are accepted by some businesses. We recommend thatyou ask for change in American dollars because the exchange

rate is poor to convert back to U.S. dollars. The Euro dollar isinstituted across Europe. It offers a convenience if you wish toexchange US to European currency. But to exchange back toUS dollars at the end of your pilgrimage will cost you a secondtime.

    ABOUT TIME DIFFERENCE:

The time difference is six hours ahead of Eastern Time, seven hours ahead of Central Time, eight hours ahead ofMountain Time, and nine hours ahead of Pacific Time.

    FLIGHT ITINERARY:

A complete listing of your flight schedules will be sent withyour final documents.

    BAGGAGE TAG:

Each traveler receives three baggage tags. Affix it to yourluggage. Most people over-pack. We recommend each personto check ONLY ONE BAG, not to exceed 50 POUNDS. (Youare permitted up to 2 pieces weighing 50 pounds. We will keep

you updated with any changes in carrier regulations) It mustbe tagged with a baggage tag to help insure its arrival. Pleaseleave tags on luggage until you return home. You may also takea carry-on bag on the plane with you, but it MUST fit under

your seat or in the overhead bin, and you must handle it your-self. WE STRONGLY DISCOURAGE THE USE OF GAR-MENT OR HANG BAGS, since they are easily damaged and/

or lost. Often, BVM/Caritas pilgrims will bring a second suit-case to bring items for members of the Community of Caritaswho are living in Medjugorje, working the Caritas MissionHouse. Call for items needed. Thank you for your help.

    CARITAS BACK PACK:

A convenient back pack will be sent to you along with ad-

ditional information in a mailing you will receive following thereception of your application and deposit, and may be used asone of your carry-ons or you may pack it in your luggage anduse it in the village to transport your extra shoes, lunch, flashlight, water bottle, etc. If you pack this, please put the baggage tag onyour carry on piece of luggage.

    CARITAS NAME BADGE:

This badge should be worn in a visible spot throughoutthe trip to assist in identifying you to the local representativeand pilgrimage members. PLEASE WEAR YOUR NAMEBADGE AT ALL TIMES.

    THE GUEST HOUSE:

The homes of the local residents where you will be a guestare very comfortable in general, with hot and cold running waterand a private bathroom you will share with a roommate(s).

    MEALS:

We want your experience to be pleasant and for you to know

exactly what your cost will be before your pilgrimage. BVM/Caritas Pilgrimages includes everything in the total cost, so allthree meals are included. You will share your meals prepared byyour host family in a central area. The lady of the house sets the

menu for breakfast and dinner in accordance with local custom, and there is no choice as it is pre-fixed. For lunch, while you arein the village, the lady of the house will pack a lunch for you,

which may include fruit, sandwiches and juice. You can put this inyour backpack to be eaten during your day out in the village, inthe churchyard, at the tables, or even up on the mountains.

    LANGUAGE:

The language of the villagers in Medjugorje is Croatian, however, there is usually one person in the host home who

    speaks some English.

    ELECTRICAL ITEMS:

If you plan to use any electrical items, remember the voltageis 220 and the outlets are European. These require transformer(220V to 110V) and adapter plug (two round prongs) to make

them work. Some adapters do not work as well as others. It isbest to buy an adapter with multiple applications to make sure itwill fit.

    MEDICATIONS:

The medications, which you require, should be carried withyou since there is no place in Medjugorje to conveniently buy

such items. All Medications must remain in their original con-tainers. This applies to both prescription and over the countermedications. It would be wise to carry them on the plane withyou in the event your luggage is delayed. (Very Important) Allneedles (for insulin or other medical uses) must have a letterfrom your doctor stating what they are used for.

FLASHLIGHTS:A flashlight is important for night walking, getting around

in the guest home at night, etc. Do not pack it in your suitcaseas sometimes security checks will cause it to be delayed fortwo or three days.

    CAMERAS AND BATTERIES:

If you take a camera, you should take extra film since it isexpensive to purchase in Medjugorje. If batteries are required, take extra. It is permissible to carry an audio tape recorder or astill camera to use during your visit. Remove all batteries fromyour equipment and do not pack them in your suitcase which

you will check-in, because you will be asked to unpack them for

safety precautions. Take them with you in your carry-on bag.

Please keep in your thoughts and in prayer that your cam-

era use, especially video, is a MAJOR distraction during yourpilgrimage. If you experience Medjugorje through the lens of acamera, you may have fantastic pictures to show your friendsupon returning home, but the experience in the depths of yourheart will remain empty and unchanged.

When you are in the room of the apparitions

or at the church, you should not preoccupy your-selves with taking pictures. Rather, you should use

the time to pray to Jesus, especially in those mo-

ments of particular grace during the apparitions.

-Our Lady Queen of Peace of Medjugorje, January 1984

We ask you to keep Our Lady's message in prayer while

packing for your pilgrimage. Dont think, Well, I may never goback any time soon, I want everything on camera or video toremember it. Then what will happen is you will only remem-ber taking pictures, and will need the picture to remember whathappened. If you experience it in the heart, you will alwayshave something to see. You just close your eyes and remem-

ber. It is our experience that those with video cameras leaveMedjugorje with far less than those who do not use them. Youare to leave with Medjugorje in your heart, not in your video.
