HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENTS BROUGHT TO LIGHT
The importance of the interior environment for the health and healing of pa-tients and by the staff has never been more clear. The fact is that when a space enables more procedures to be undertaken, patient safety is increased. When a facility minimizes the risk of contamination, it maximizes a healthy outcome. When a space looks more like home, it helps patients feel better. When health care environments incorporate sustainable design principles, everyone benefits
The ANSI/IESNA RP-29-06 - LIGHTING FOR HOSPITALS AND HEALTH CARE FACILITIES published by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America defines more than 15 quantitative and qualitative factors that, when working together, create a more functional healthcare environment. At Metalumen, we believe that our lighting solutions can have an influence on all of them. That’s why every product in our broad line of healthcare luminaires has been strategically engineered to meet modern healthcare demands while addressing patient needs and aesthetic requirements.

General comments for hospital areas
A residential appearance is desirable for patient areas. Fixture appearance is important for most spaces.
Illumination levels may be increased where elderly or others with visual deficets are doing tasks such as reading
Distribution of light and luminance control on surfaces and tasks is important for all spaces shown. A high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) > 80 is required for most hospital areas and for critical medical examination the required CRI may be 85 to 90+. Color temperature should be > 3500K for consistency for medical color comparisons. It may be >4100K to integrate with daylight.
Infection control is important throughout the facility especially where patients are present in Patient and Treatment areas. Lighting control without touching the fixture, anti-microbial finishes and easily cleaned smooth surfaces are aspects of infection control protocols. All fixtures should have electronic ballasts to eliminate flicker. At Metalumen, we believethat our lighting solutions can have an influence on all of them. That’s why every product in our broad line of healthcare luminaires has been strategically engineered to meet modern healthcare demands while addressing patient needs and aesthetic requirements.
