Tuscany Pisa MEDICI VILLA FOR SALE IN PISA

DESCRIPTIONThis property in Italy was built in the mid 1500's and is one of the few in the province of Pisa in Tuscany, personally inhabited by a direct descendant of the branch of the de'Medici family. Giulio de’ Medici, great grandson of Lorenzo il Magnifico, appointed Admiral of the Medici Fleet by the Grand Duke Cosimo I.  It was built in the Pisan countryside near the sea, a true villa in the Medici tradition by an architect who is identified as Buontalenti or Francavilla. In memory of this ancient origin, the villa has a large marble Medici crest above the main door that leads inside, comprising a large living room with a fireplace in grey sandstone and numerous rooms with wooden ceilings. The house, set in a small wood of 1 hectare with age-old oaks, fruit trees and lemon trees, consists of three floors with many windows adorned with pilasters of typical Florentine style, framed in grey

sandstone and therefore conforming to the functional patterns typical of the buildings of the mid sixteenth century.

The luxury property for sale was purchased and restored by the current owners in the seventies, and is now under the tutelage of the Fine Arts, is a large building that extends over two levels covering 1500mq but boasts an extra level entirely occupied by ancient cellars, fermentation rooms and a storage area as well as two charming towers that dominate on both sides of the house. The villa also enjoys an enviable view not only of the Leaning Tower of Pisa but also of the Apuan Alps and the mountains of Pisa.

TECHNICAL DETAILSLOCATIONThe first evidence of San Giuliano Terme dates back to the Neolithic age. Over the centuries, acquiring the “status” of colony produced significant changes in the cities and territories. The fact that the Romans knew of the therapeutic properties of the springs is evidenced in the number of times the "waters of Pisa" were mentioned by Pliny the Elder. With the supremacy of Pisa over Lucca, established for the definition of the territories, in 1112 the Countess Matilda of Canossa radically restored the thermal springs. Around the middle of the XV century, the Florentine republic sought to make improvements to the baths through a more general policy of promoting the economy of the territory of Pisa. Unfortunately, first an outbreak of plague (1630) and then one of typhus (1648), contributed to the decline in population and to the disgrace of the territory until the early eighteenth century when a big change for the village took place. With the death of Giangastone de'Medici, the last male descendant of the family, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany passed to Lorena who, after a careful study of the territory, perceived the tourist-thermal potential of the old spa-bath of the Pisan mountain, deciding upon the investment needed for enhancement of the territory of San Giuliano. From the end of the XVII century, many wealthy Pisan and Florentine families chose to build their villas at the foot of the mountains of Pisa, attracted both by the pleasant climate and the landscape. The Baths, in fact, experienced a period of unparalleled splendour, welcoming illustrious guests such as King Charles XIII of Sweden, the future King George IV, Vittorio Alfieri, the countess Albany, King Gustav III of Sweden and later General Murat, the poets Shelley and Byron, Carlo Alberto, Giacomo Puccini and many others.
