MEDIGAP INSURANCE POLICIES AND PLANS

What are Medicare Supplement Insurance policies?

Medicare supplement insurance policies are an option when you become eligible for Medicare. Medicare was designed to be a safety net for seniors and even though it does provide a lot of affordable medical coverage, it doesn’t cover everything.

Medicare supplement Insurance  plans (Medigap) were designed by the federal government to help in paying costs over and above what Medicare covers. These Medical supplement insurance health plans have become known as Medigap plans because they make up for the “gaps” that Medicare doesn’t cover.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

When the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 was passed, it allowed Medicare beneficiaries the option to receive their Medicare benefits through private health insurance plans, instead of through the original Medicare plan (Parts A and B). These programs were known as Medicare plus Choice or “Part C” plans. Before the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act was passed in 2003, Medicare plus Choice plans were made more attractive to Medicare beneficiaries by adding the prescription drug coverage which became known as Medicare Advantage plans.
