MNTB FACTSHEET April 2010Training for medical first aid/medical care on board ship
and updating of medical care aboard ship (optional)
This factsheet is aimed at seafarers who are required to provide medical first aidand/or medical care aboard ship in accordance with the Merchant Shipping (Training
and Certification) Regulations 1997. It identifies the three types of training to beundertaken medical first aid and medical care, which are both mandatory, andmedical refresher training, which is optional. The explanation below is supplementedby the diagram, over.
1 Training for medical first aid on board ship
This training is intended for seafarers who are designated to provide medical first aidon board ship, in accordance with Regulation VI/4 of the Annex to the STCWConvention and Section A-VI/4 (13) of the STCW Code.
1.1 Candidates must be at least 16 years old.
1.2 As a part of the mandatory requirement for Basic Training, Elementary First Aidis provided at a pre-sea stage.
1.3 Candidates who hold a certificate in Elementary First Aidissued in accordance
with Section A VI/1 of the STCW Code (or an equivalent recognised by the
