MEDICAL OXYGEN FIRE SAFETYHow Do I Prevent an Oxygen Related Fire?• Donotsmokeorletanyoneelsesmokewheremedicaloxygenisinuseorstored.ThereisNOsafewaytosmokeinthehomewhenoxygenisinuse.Thisincludesalltypesoftobaccoandnon-tobaccosmokingproductsincludingelectroniccigarettes.
• PostNO SMOKING signs–oneattheentrancetoahomeandoneintheroomwheretheoxygenequipmentisinuseand/orstored.
• Sparkorfriction-generatingequipmentsuchasfrictiontoys,grindingtools,electricshavers,hairdryers,etc.shouldnotbeusedwhileusingoxygenorinthepresenceoftheoxygenequipment.
• Keepoxygencylindersatleast1.5 metres (5 feet)fromaheatsource,openflamesorelectricaldevices.
• Candles,stoves,matches,woodstovesoranydevicewithanopenflamecanbeignitionsourcesandshouldnotbeusedinthehome.
• Bodyoil,handlotionanditemscontainingoilandgreasecaneasilyburn.Keepoilandgreaseawaywhereoxygenisinuse.
• Petroleumjelly,oilylotions,facecreams,orhairproductsshouldnotbeusedwhenusingoxygen.Keephandsoil-freewhenhandlingoxygenequipment.
• Aerosolsprayscontainingcombustiblematerialsshouldnotbeusednearoxygenequipmentorwhileusingoxygen.

What's theRisk?Oxygenusersmusttakeprecautionsbecauseanythingthatburns(suchasclothing,carpets,drapes,furniture,etc.)willburn much fasterandatahigher temperature inthepresenceofoxygen,if a flame or sparkispresent.
Oxygensaturatesfabriccoveredfurniture,clothing,hairandbedding,makingiteasierforafiretostartandspreadquickly.
Smoking materialsaretheleadingheatsourceresultinginmedicaloxygenrelatedfires,injuriesordeathsinOntario.
