Program Overview The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine that may be used in the maintenance of health and diagnosis/treatment of disease. Course work emphasizes mathematical and scientific concepts related to specimen collection, laboratory testing and procedures, quality assurance, and reporting/recording and interpreting findings involving tissues, blood, and body fluids. Graduates are eligible to take the examination given by the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Employment opportunities include laboratories in hospitals, medical offices, industry, and research facilities. The Medical Laboratory Technology program is a competitive admissions program. Each year a maximum of 24 students are selected along with alternates. Students are ranked according to the total score on the Medical Laboratory Technology Application Form. If you are not accepted and you wish to reapply, you must complete a new Medical Laboratory Technology Admission Form for the preferred application period.

I. Program Overview

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratoryprocedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine that may be used in themaintenance of health and diagnosis/treatment of disease.

Course work emphasizes mathematical and scientific concepts related to specimen collection, laboratory testingand procedures, quality assurance, and reporting/recording and interpreting findings involving tissues, blood, andbody fluids.

II. Steps to Complete Before Applying for the MLT Program

CPCC College Admission

1. Attend a virtual Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program Information Session or Open House Event at CPCC.The MLT program hosts virtual information sessions and open house events for students interested in a detailed description of the program and the admission process. Dates and locations of these sessions will be posted on the CPCC Medical Laboratory Technology program website. Admission points can be earned by attending anInformation Session.

2. Complete the CPCC College Admission Application.Applications are available online at www.cpcc.edu or at any of the CPCC campus locations. Designate theMedical Laboratory Technology Holding Code (A55280L) or Health Programs as the program of interest on theCollege Admission Application.

3. The full list of Enrollment Steps can be found here. These steps consist of establishing NC residency and requestingofficial transcripts from high school (unless you have earned an Associate degree or higher), all colleges attendedfor credit, and Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores if requesting college credit at CPCC through AP exam testing.

4. Request an external official copy or copies of high school/GED and college transcripts be sent to CPCC StudentRecords, PO Box 35009, Charlotte, NC 28235‐5009. Transcripts are processed in the order of which they arereceived. Please allow up to four weeks for processing. You will be notified via your CPCC student email when theevaluation is completed.

5. If your high school or college transcripts are not from the United States, you will need an International TranscriptEvaluation reviewed by an agent outside of Central Piedmont Community College.You are advised to submit yourrecord of courses to an agency recognized by the National Association of Credential Evaluating Services (NACES)website. There is a fee for this service. There is a fee for this service.

Required Testing1. Take required Math and English Placement testing at a CPCC Testing Center. Students with college credit for

English and Algebra may be exempt from the English and Math Placement tests as determined by the CPCCTranscript Evaluator. All students must meet with an academic advisor to review placement test scores.

If required based on placement tests or high school GPA score, complete all required coursework to beeligible for ENG 111 and MAT 110

2. All applicants must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills the (ATI TEAS) test. You will need to schedule anappointment following instructions at the Testing Center website.

A study guide is available at www.atitesting.comA minimum overall TEAS score of 60 is recommended for admissions into the MLT program.

Get a Head Start! Any non‐MLT prefix course required for the Medical Laboratory Technology program may be taken prior to submitting the MLT Program Application. See the Degree tab on the Medical Laboratory Technology catalog page for the list of required courses. Completion of designated courses may also increase your application score.

III. Medical Laboratory Technology Program Admission Requirements

Points are earned from the following areas:

1. Attendance at a Medical Laboratory Technology Session2. TEAS Test Scores3. Related Work Experience4. Completed Academic Courses

The points will be recorded on the application form on page 4. Application must be fully completed (typed, not hand‐written) and submitted along with the other supporting documents.

IV. Acceptance Into the Program

Upon acceptance into the Medical Laboratory Technology program, students are required to:

• Submit results of a North Carolina and/or national criminal background check at their ownexpense.

• Students must also complete a medical exam, provide record of immunizations, and carryCPCC’s accident insurance.

The required forms are available at the MLT Program Website and will be discussed at the mandatory Medical Laboratory Technology Orientation session for students who are accepted into the program.

After acceptance and enrollment in the program, students are required to take all courses as scheduled and sequenced. This is considered a lockstep sequence program.
