1 Therapeutic Massage & Self Care for Medical Coders Bonnie Mandrell, LMT My Experience ‐ I Can Relate! My previous work experience prior to becoming a massage therapist was banking, so much like you all and many others, I was at a desk constantly. Over time, I developed over‐use injuries including severe tendonitis in my wrist, forearm, & golfer’s and tennis elbow, severe neck and shoulder pain, low back pain, you name it. I was taking anti‐inflammatory over the counter medicine like candy because the pain was unbearable. Eventually, it got to the point where I was not able to function, literally, my hands, especially the right side, was not able to mouse or type. I decided to let the company know what was happening and so they encouraged me to use the worker’s comp program to get some help, since the injury occurred on the job. The treatment included physical therapy accompanied by massage therapy. I followed the orders of the Dr and PT and I began to notice a change for the better, eventually leading to NO PAIN, and all the tools I needed to prevent it from ever happening again! I’ve always loved the body and it’s function and from then on, I was determined to help myself continue a pain free lifestyle. My Work is my Passion & Mission ‐Help others achieve immediate relief through therapeutic massage. ‐Educate & Empower my clients by teaching self care techniques they can easily use by incorporating them into simple daily routines that take very little time and bring amazing relief & results. What is Therapeutic Massage?

Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type ofmassage modality that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific problem—such as a frozen shoulder. It also depends on the type of therapy needed. Massage is used by some for emotional trauma, cancer patients, pregnancy discomfort, etc.There are several different types of therapeutic massage in addition to deep tissue massage, such as:‐ Neuromuscular massage or Neuromuscular Therapy‐ Myofascial massage‐ Trigger point therapy‐ Sports massage

How Can Therapeutic Massage Help Medical Coders?

• Stress Relief• Pain Reduction in hands, arms, back, neck• Increased Circulation to entire body, including the

brain.• Depending on type of therapy needed and desired

result by client, can help change muscular patterns which in turn affects joint function and postural patterns in the body.

• Break up scar tissue due to injuries – carpal tunnel surgery? Frozen shoulder?

• Soothing to the nervous system Assists the coder client in greater body awareness in daily life. How long have I been sitting? What position is my body in right now? How long have I been holding my neck this way?

• Increased focus at work due to pain relief – Coders have so much focus on details in coding!

Most Common Overuse Injuries For Medical Coders

• “Computer back”• ”Mouse shoulder”‐ result of subscapularis tendonitis• ”Tech Neck”• Tennis Elbow ‐ lateral elbow tendonitis• Golfer’s Elbow ‐ medial elbow tendonitis• Lumbar sprains and strains• Spinal Disk issues• Subscapularis tendonitis resulting in entire shoulder pain• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome• Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

In a Nutshell…..Sitting for too long = bad for our bodies!

All of the previous soft tissue issues are basically categorized as Upper Crossed Syndrome and Lower Crossed Syndrome.

We live in a forward facing world and so it’s common for all of us to forget that the front and back should work together or synergistically!

Our front musculature gets pulled short and tight and the back gets locked long and tight!

What are some consequences of Lower & Upper Crossed Syndrome?

• Trigger Points and fibromyalgia• Ache or burning in the shoulders• Pins and needles, or other referred symptoms into the arms and

hands• Rotator cuff strains and other shoulder problems• Breathing disturbances including Asthma• Emotional and psychological conditions such as depression• Migraines and tension headaches• Digestive disturbances, bowel problems, kidney and menstrual

dysfunction due to circulation failures• Allergies and weak immune function, such as Candida infections

etc.

Lower Crossed Syndrome

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome – Brachial Plexus Impingement

• characterized by compression of the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that come from your spinal cord and control muscle movements and sensation in your shoulder, arm and hand. In the majority of thoracic outlet syndrome cases, the symptoms are neurogenic & some can be restricted blood flow to arm and hand

• Caused by compression of brachial plexus of short and tight musculature, postural, repetitive habits, locking down on the nerves and blood vessels, inhibiting blood flow and feeling depending on how severe.

Take Away

Achieving reduced pain every day or even zero pain is doable! I never imagined it could happen for me and I imagine I am not the only one that it can true for.

‐ SELF CARE is a must. Movement, stretches, hydration, icing, and MASSAGE, and it doesn’t have to be difficult. It feels so great and brings more relief the more its practiced.
