The Box Top competition will be starting after the holidays so keep saving those box tops! More information will be coming soon! Not only do the box tops earn money for the school, also the class bring-ing in the most box tops will win a prize! You can help make the counting easier by cutting them out on the dotted lines (the box top company is very strict about this) and put them in groups of 50 into Ziploc bags. Also, expired box tops are not eligible. Thank you!

On Tuesday, January 14th at 6:30 pm, the 5th grade choir and 5th grade band will be performing.

The 5th and 6th graders just

finished up volleyball. The class's

played 4 vs 4 to finish up the unit.

We have started basketball. The

towards the end of the unit.

To understand the court of

Students are currently wrapping up their Online Communication unit and will be beginning Intro to Coding/Computer Science. Fifth graders will be using the code.org curriculum called CS Fundamentals to learn basic coding strategies and concepts.

In addition to completing this new unit, all intermediate students will also be participating in a world-wide coding event called the Hour of Code. In our building, this event will take place during the week of December 16th. Keep an eye out for more info to come on this exciting celebration of Computer Science!

6th Grade World Studies

Students are discovering how much fun the Spanish language and culture are as we learn Spanish greetings, numbers 1-31 and calendar vocabulary. Students are looking forward to our upcoming research project, which is to create a Google Site about a Spanish-speaking country. Be sure to ask them to share it with you!

Woodland Wolves Chorus

Choir: We celebrate this concert with a pizza party and will begin our rehearsals for the KASD Choral Festival in January, girls on the 21st, boys on the 23rd. We will have combined (both boys and girls) on February 4th, 6th and 11th. The performance will be on February 17th in the KASD field house. If there are any additional students interested in joining choir, those are required rehearsals, allowing for ample time to learn the concert music. Please let Mrs. Been know if your child would like to join and make arrangements to have her/him at those rehearsals. Attire for that performance will be black bottoms (pants or skirt with black tights/leggings), black shoes, and a white top (tie is optional).

If your student has a schedule change which makes is hard to commit to the Spring concert on April 7th, please let me know before the KASD Choral Fest in

February.

Healthy Living 5

th Grade

Healthy Living-5

We have recently finished our

nutrition unit. I’ve told the students

that even though our nutrition unit

has ended, our goals of choosing

what we eat based on the “Choose

Myplate” criteria will never end! :)

Thanks for your support at home with

their choices.

Yet this year we'll be discussing

another important health issue-

tobacco and vaping. As “invincible”

5th graders, it is often difficult for

students to grasp the idea that the

choices they make now will have

immediate and long term effects on

their health. Knowing the effects

cigarettes and e-cigarettes have on

their physical, mental and social

health will help them with the

decision to not smoke cigarettes.

We will be watching the 5th grade

human growth and development

video on January 20th and 21st. I am

also still trying to confirm our speaker

from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center

before the semester ends.

As always, if you have any questions

or concerns, please contact me.

6th Grade Art The 6th grade students are currently working on a sheet metal project. The students started out their sheet metal project by searching on their chrome book for an image or logo that is an interest of theirs. The 6th grade students then drew their image onto a piece of computer paper, while drawing out their image they were sure to use rulers and stencils to make their image was very neat and clean. After their drawing was finished they taped their computer paper to a piece of sheet metal and put a book underneath the metal for cushion. The students then retraced with a pencil right over their lines on their drawing so that their image would copy onto the sheet metal. After they had their image copied onto the metal they took the computer paper off and begin to bubble the metal. The 6th grade students had to bubble up and bubble down the metal so that the metal had an example of being sunk down and popped out. The students used different shaped wood tools to push into their metal. The 6th grade students also added a texture in the background of their metal with one of the wood tools. The students then used different colored sharpies to decorate their metal with color. When the students were all finished with their metal they created a frame for the back of their metal with paper. The frame had to incorporate images, words or other things that go along with the image on their metal. The students then made a name tag and used their chrome book to fill out their check off sheet (self- assessment) on our Google classroom. The metal projects will be displayed in the hallways when they are finished.

-The Elements of Art we have covered are: Color, Form, Line, Shape, Space, Texture and Value.

Band

Congratulations to all our 6th grade band students on a wonderful concert. The quality of music that was performed by our

Woodland students was incredible. The hard work and

practice was obvious when listening to the beautiful music performed by such young musicians. We are proud of our students. After the concert, we had a hot cocoa and candy cane social

which raised $412.72. These

donations will be given to the American Red Cross and a local animal shelter. Thank you to all who support our students in their music endeavors.

Grade 5: Preparations are well under way for the January 14th concert! This

concert will be held at 6:30 in the evening and will feature every member of the 5th grade class singing songs about

the immigration to America from Europe in early American history. The students

have been working very hard at learning

to sing in 2-part harmony. Every student is expected to be in attendance. Please

let Mrs. Been know if there is a conflict that cannot be accommodated. There will be a rehearsal at 1:30, if there is a

family member who is unable to attend the evening performance, they are

welcome to come at that time. Students should dress in nice clothes for the evening concert, to make a good first

impression! Nice pants, shirts with no logos or writing, skirts and dresses are encouraged. Please wear low or no-

heeled dress shoes. Thanks! Grade 6: Our concert was fantastic,

thanks to the 6th grade students! You

really brought your best efforts to our performances! Thank you, parents for

your support. We are moving back into reading music, looking for dynamics, key

signatures and other important clues for how the music should be performed. We will have a brief unit of playing tone

chimes to review note names, in preparation for our next round of piano keyboarding.

Beyond the Books

Attention all 5th and 6th grade students! We have a great opportunity for you!   Beyond the Books is a club founded by Kimberly High School students that works to promote role models in the community, while promoting positive educational habits. Every month, the students and the high schoolers are going to read the same book, then do activities that have to do with the book. By doing this activity, we hope to give pre-teens in the community a fun, inspiring, bonding experience that will connect them not only with high schoolers, but students their age as well. All 5th and 6th grade students are welcome, however we ask that they read the book before the meeting.   This month, we are going to be reading Finally 12 by Wendy Mass, which is the sequel to the book we

read last month, 11 Birthdays. A brief description of the book is listed below.   “Rory Swenson has been waiting her whole life to turn twelve. And she”s got a list to prove it. Whenever Rory asks her parents for something, they always say, "When you”re twelve, when you”re twelve, when you”re twelve." Well, in exactly 18 hours, 36 minutes, and 52 seconds, it will finally happen.”

The Meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 12th , 3:15-4:15. The meeting will be held at Woodland Intermediate School.   If your son/daughter would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please fill out the form, which is linked below, and all of the corresponding information. The form will close 01/15/20, and we have a limited number of spots, so please fill it out as soon as possible to reserve your spot.  https://forms.gle/unhKXATsp1DgP4u69   If you have any questions, feel free to contact Kailey Krzoska at [email protected]
