Tuesday, April 16 • 8:15 - 9:15 amSenator William Frist, M .D ., Former Senate Majority Leader

senator William frist, M.D.Senator Bill Frist is a doctor, teacher, public servant, and active humanitarian . He is both a nationally recognized heart and lung transplant surgeon and former U .S . Senate Majority Leader . Uniquely qualified to address the challenges and solutions in health care policy, Senator Frist is recognized among the most influential leaders in American health-care and is one of only two individuals to rank in the top ten of all five inaugural Modern Healthcare Magazine annual surveys of the most powerful people in healthcare in the United States .

Dr . Frist is a citizen legislator . He represented Tennessee in the U .S . Senate for 12 years where he served on both committees responsible for writing health legislation (Health and Finance) . Senator Frist majored in health policy at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, then graduated with honors from Harvard Medical School, and completed advanced surgical fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford . Returning to Nashville, he founded and directed the Vanderbilt Transplant Center, where he performed over 150 heart and lung transplants and authored over 100 peer-reviewed medical publications, over 400 newspaper articles, and seven books on topics such as bioterrorism, transplantation, and leadership . Today Senator Frist is focused on health reform, the basic science of heart transplantation, global health policy, K-12 education reform, economic development in low-income countries, health care disparities, and medical mission work in Sudan . Senator Frist is chair of Save the Children’s “Newborn and Child Survival” campaign, Nashville- based Hope Through Healing Hands, the Tennessee State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE), and is co-chair of both First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Partnership for a Healthier America” to eliminate childhood obesity and the Bipartisan Policy Center Health Project in Washington, DC .

In addition to annual medical mission trips throughout Africa, Senator Frist traveled to Haiti in 2010 as a volunteer physician in the very immediate aftermath of the devastating earthquake; he currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund . Additional board service includes the Kaiser Family Foundation, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Cate-Frist Family Foundation, and Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows . Wednesday, April 17 • 8:15 - 9:15 amCaptain Mark Kelly (Keynote Speaker), U .S . Navy and NASA AstronautGabrielle Giffords (Special Appearance), Former Congresswoman

captain Mark Kelly & Gabrielle Giffordscaptain Mark Kelly is an American astronaut, retired US Navy Captain, best-selling author, and an experienced naval aviator who flew combat missions during the Gulf War . The winner of many awards, including the Legion of Merit , two Defense Superior Service Medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Captain Kelly was selected as an astronaut in 1996 . He flew his first of four missions in 2001 aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour, the same space shuttle that he commanded on its final flight in May 2011 . He has also commanded Space Shuttle Discovery and is one of only two individuals who have visited the Interna-tional Space Station on four different occasions .

U.s. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) was first elected to Arizona’s 8th Congressional District seat in 2006 and won reelections in 2008 and 2010 . Congress-woman Giffords was a Fulbright Scholar and holds a bachelor of arts degree from Scripps College and a master’s from Cornell University . Before coming to Washington, DC, she served in the Arizona state House of Representatives from 2001 until 2003 and in the Arizona state Senate from 2003 until 2005, where she was the youngest woman ever elected to that body . Upon entering Congress in 2007, she quickly became a leading champion of border security, energy independence, and the needs of military families and veterans . Consistently ranked as one of the most centrist legislators in Congress, Congresswoman Giffords has been a strong supporter of fiscal responsibility, bipartisanship, and government accountability .

On January 8, 2011, a gunman opened fire at a local event in Tucson, where Congresswoman Giffords was meeting with constituents . Six people were killed, and 13 others were injured in the attack . That Congresswoman Giffords survived the attack is remarkable . Her return to the floor of the U .S . House of Representatives less than seven months after her injury to vote on the controversial debt ceiling legislation has been described as miraculous . Her road to this unprecedented recovery speaks volumes to her strength, temerity, and indomitable will to survive . She resigned her Congressional seat in January 2012, choosing to focus on her continued recovery . Upon stepping down, she announced, “I will return, and we will work together for Arizona and this great country .” She lives in Tucson and Houston with her husband, Captain Mark Kelly .

Intheirbest-sellingmemoir,Gabby:AStoryofCourageand Hope, the couple shared their story of hope and resilience . Their story captivated the nation in an exclusive Diane Sawyer interview, Nightline and The Daily Show, as well as on the covers of People and USA Today . Congress-woman Giffords and Captain Kelly are American heroes who inspire others to be their best while remaining true to their core values . They exemplify leadership, the importance of teamwork, and courage under pressure .

Got Milk? Using Barcoding for Breast Milk Verification

Newborns are delicate and any error could potentially cause them harm . The use of expressed breast milk in the neonatal population is common practice but managing the breast milk may be difficult, with issues around the safe storage and inventory of the breast milk and the correct identification between breast milk and infant . When stored breast milk is given to infants at specified times, there is potential for a mismatch error in which an infant could receive the wrong breast milk . Because breast milk can contain bacteria and viruses, administration of the wrong mother’s milk can create potentially fatal consequences because of infants premature immune systems . This session explains how the team at the Mayo Clinic used the current Flowsheet module with the addition of a barcode technology to provide an efficient process for scanning the barcode on the stored breast-milk bottle and validate by scanning the infant’s identification band .

attendees will learn: 1 . The reasons for developing a breast milk verification process

Hardwiring clinical Pathways Within centricity eMr to enhance Quality, efficiency, and outcomes

Learn about the experience of WESTMED Medical Group in implementing Ambulatory Care Pathways based on national clinical guidelines to optimize treatment of many common conditions that are often (unnecessarily) treated in a hospital, including cellulitis, pneumonia, DVT, diverticulitis, chest pain, syncope, and GI bleeding . WESTMED believes that subsets of patients who are not critically ill are better served in outpatient settings if coordinated care can be orchestrated . Use of such evidence-based protocols should limit unnecessary variation in clinical practice (e .g . overutilization), help prevent errors, provide a more comfortable patient experience, and help decrease cost . Their strategy to maximize provider adoption and utilization has been to develop interactive Ambulatory Pathway templates within the EMR . All pathways contain diagnostic testing recommendations, a risk stratification algorithm, an outpatient management menu, and a patient handout . The session will include a live demonstration of the group’s custom EMR forms showing multiple ease-of-use features . Their core aim is to help facilitate necessary diagnostic coding, test ordering, clinical referrals, and medication selection for specific clinical conditions . In addition, there will be a review of the analytic tools WESTMED developed to track individual provider utilization of the pathways, patient outcomes, and achievement of broader process goals, such as reduction in hospital admissions .

attendees will learn: 1 . How structured care coordination, using Centricity EMR, can help impact quality and cost synergistically

throughout an organization by enhancing the efficiency of clinically integrated ambulatory centers

2 . How development and implementation of Ambulatory Pathway templates embedded in a convenient format within the existing EMR facilitates clinical decision support, increases physician engagement, and enables evidence-based care, making “the right thing to do the easy thing to do”

This project involved bug fixes and new software development within Enterprise Orders; populating an order catalog of 6,000 entries; new interfaces to ancillary systems; and an implementation covering 7,000 providers and staff in 140 unique practice areas .

attendees will learn: 1 . How Mayo Clinic satisfied the primary Meaningful Use objective of having all outpatient ordering done in a

certified electronic health record system and realized additional gains through the use of a single ordering tool; the ability to include clinical decision support; the standardization of the order catalog and order sets; and an introduction to problem or guideline-based ordering .

2 . About Mayo Clinic’s vision for “EO Wall To Wall”, a suite of projects will culminate in all ordering for every inpatient and outpatient practice and specialty area being done in Enterprise Orders

MedStar and the Million Hearts Initiative: Leveraging Meaningful Use to reduce the Incidence of cardiovascular Disease

In 2012, MedStar Health became the first health system partner with the Department of Health and Human Services “Million Hearts” initiative . The Million Hearts initiative was developed by HHS and the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, and is based on the premise that if the US could improve adherence with cardiovascular risk reduction in four areas (known as the “ABCs”), we could collectively prevent onemillionnewheartsattacksandstrokesover5years.The“ABCs”ofcardiovascularriskreductionare: A = aspirin use for those without contraindication, and where benefit outweighs risk; B = blood pressure screening and goal setting, and where hypertension exists, wherever possible, treatment to goal; C = cholesterol screening and goal setting, and where hyperlipidemia exists, wherever possible, treatment to goal; and S = smoking status identification, and for current smokers, aggressive counseling and treatment towards smoking cessation . Using a combination of patient engagement and education, advanced point-of-care clinical decision prompts within the EHR, and reports, MedStar Health went live with Million Hearts on October 1, 2012 . Our goal is to appropriately address the ABCs of cardiovascular risk reduction for all patients 18 years and older, who are seen by any of our primary care providers .

attendees will learn: 1 . How a complex and ambitious national health priority program was developed for a large health system,

charge Tracking is it possible

In a largely paper based practice it was impossible to track where charges were within the process . The unknown made it difficult to manage the workflow as well as staffing in an efficient manner . By discussing our challenges with our IT department they were able to develop a tracking system utilizing AES, which we have named Charge Tracker . Now we can assess at what stage the charges are in and adjust staffing to ensure charges are flowing in a consistent manner . This tool allows not only the Revenue Department to follow charges it also is a great tool for the Director’s of Operations in our various departments manage their charges . It auto-mates the process of reconciling charges by nightly matching up what is in Charge Tracker to what has been entered into IDX .

attendees will learn: 1 . Am I utilizing my staff in the most efficient way? Where do I need staff today, registration or charge entry?

2 . Do I know where my charges are? Are they waiting to be coded, entered, discharged, in a TES edit or has the charge made it through BAR?

Analytics overview: Market Trends, customer needs, and Solutions

Integrated, accountable care requires providers to develop new capabilities that were not as critical in the fee-for-service world . For example, quality of care and patient satisfaction are becoming connected with reim-bursements through value-based purchasing (VBP), and providers, in an effort to maintain margins, are actively working to avoid penalties and maximize reimbursements . In Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), providers are forming alliances with payers to improve quality of care for a patient population, even beyond certain standards, and to reduce the costs associated with the care delivered . Analytics become critical as they provide near-real-time monitoring on quality metrics, help organizations identify unnecessary variability and bottle-necks across the care continuum, and support actions based on these insights . Similarly, analytics are needed to gain insights into the drivers of costs related to care delivery .

There are several analytics solution in the market place, incl . Caradigm that is specifically focused on helping IDNs and ACOs monitor quality of care and costs for a population and provide insights to frontline workers and executives for corrective actions, as needed . Caradigm’s portfolio includes applications that use analytics to help address issues from readmissions management to ACO management (monitoring organizations perfor-mance across both the quality and cost dimensions) .

attendees will learn: 1 . How the analytics landscape is evolving

2 . What solutions are available to meet these challenges and Caradigm’s position and offering on analytics
