From Fr Spicer

Alleluia! Christ is Risen.

Whether you are reading this online or on a paper copy I trust that this finds you staying healthy and safe. To those of you who underlying medical conditions I hope that you are receiving the treatment that you need. Thankfully, our hospitals have not yet been overwhelmed with covid-19 sufferers, but you still need to attend appointments if asked to and anyone seriously ill should still be calling 999 quickly.

Thank you to everyone who is still working, either from home or especially those of you who must leave home and take risks to help and support the rest of us. Many of you are doing shopping, delivering prescriptions, telephoning around, playing your part in our community at this time. Thank you.

To our young families and youngsters, well done and keep at your schoolwork and keep safe for yourselves and others.

Thank you to those of you joining in Mass and the daily prayers of the Church online. It’s a bit of a steep techno learning curve for many of us but is proving to be a source of rich blessings. Fr Vyse and I are doing what we can for the 40 or so of you who aren’t on the internet, calling and delivering prayer sheets. You, especially on Sundays, are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to all of you supporting the churches financially. The treasurer can help with bank donations; envelopes and other donations can be passed to Fr Vyse or myself. We still have church bills to pay, and with no extra fundraising happening need all the help you can give.

Lastly thank you Father for raising the Lord Jesus from the dead and being present with each of us always. Strengthen our faith in you present in our homes and places of work at this time. Help

everyone to bring this virus under control as soon as possible. Bless us and keep us safe. The Church of England is undertaking a second review of files held in all dioceses and parishes to ensure that churches and church related activities are as safe as possible for children and vulnerable adults. Known as the Past Cases Review 2, it aims to identify both good practice and institutional failings in the way that allegations of abuse have been handled in the past. It will also provide recommendations on how practice and processes can be improved.

All Parishes in the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham are obliged to submit relevant information for the review. We have been asked to check back through our parish records to ensure that all safeguarding concerns and allegations involving clergy or church officers have been reported to the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA). Fr Spicer has already written to all past clergy and Churchwardens. Barry Earnshaw, Independent Chair to the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel (DSAP), will work with independent case reviewers to scrutinise the files to make sure all cases have been dealt with appropriately.

Individuals who wish to make representations to the PCR2 process, or who need to come forward with information, or make any disclosures regarding church related abuse, are encouraged to make direct contact with the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA) on 01636 817200 or email [email protected] However, recognising that for those with a lived experience of abuse from within the church may not feel comfortable, a dedicated telephone helpline - 0800 80 20 20 - operated independently from the church, by the NSPCC, has been set up. Anyone can use the helpline to provide information or to raise concerns regarding abuse within the Church of England; whether they are reporting issues relating to children, adults or seeking to whistle blow about poor safeguarding practice.

Every diocese in the Church of England is undertaking a similar review. The previous past cases review, carried out in 2007, looked at safeguarding complaints made against clergy in relation to children. PCR2 is much broader in scope and will look at all safeguarding complaints made against clergy and church officials relating to children and adults, including domestic abuse.Survivors were not invited to contribute to the 2007-2009 PCR and the Church has wanted to ensure a different, trauma informed approach is taken by PCR2. Listening to survivor voices has helped to shape how this review itself will be conducted. It is hoped that when the PCR2 has been completed the Church will be able to state that:

All known safeguarding cases have been appropriately managed and reported to statutory agencies or the police where appropriate;

The needs of any known victims have been considered and that sources of support have been identified and offered, where this is appropriate;

Page 4: media.acny.uk€¦  · Web viewIndividuals who wish to make representations to the PCR2 process, or who need to come forward with information, or make any disclosures regarding church

All identified risks have been assessed and mitigated as far as is reasonably possible. For more information on PCR2 please speak with Fr Spicer, our Parish Safeguarding co-ordinator Mrs Helen Hurt or the Diocesan Advisor.

Financial Update

As always, we are grateful for the congregation’s generosity in giving. At this time giving is more difficult and many businesses, charities and individuals are facing large reductions in income. Priory and S Paul’s are not immune.

Inevitably, income from the Sunday plate and occasional services has gone down to zero and, whilst some envelopes have reached us, they too have dramatically reduced. Even getting to the bank to pay in what income we are receiving is proving to be a challenge.

We have reduced expenditure where possible, but many of the large bills we are obliged to pay remain: for example, the church still needs to be insured and maintained, and telephone bills have inevitably increased!

Whilst we hope that we are all back in church before long, we would be grateful if those who do give regularly through the Sunday plate or envelopes hang onto those for when we return (or when on your daily exercise pop them through the vicarage letter box). Or, alternatively, switch to standing order.

If you do wish to give by standing order, then by far the easiest way of doing that is to set it up via your online banking system. If you would like a form to send to your bank, please let one of us know.

The Priory bank details for standing orders or donations are:Yorkshire Bank plc Sort code: 05-09-89 A/c number: 38125853

The S Paul’s bank details for standing orders or donations are HSBC Sort code 40-47-21 A/c number 20724599

Thank you.

Priory & S. Paul’s Youth Group; Junior Church

We continue as an online community! Contact us on our own Facebook messenger site “Priory & St Paul’s Children & Support” group. There will also be other opportunities to tap into other sites through us.

At the moment we are following the Sunday School online activities set up by S. Paul’s Church in Chichester: this is a weekly programme that is recorded rather than live-streamed so that it can be reached at any time. Go to https://www.stpaulschichester.org/childrenandyoungpeople.htm; or else go to stpaulschichester.org and click on “Children & Youth” and then on “Click for online activities for children & young people during the pandemic COVID19”. One sad consequence of the Virus is the cancellation of this year’s Youth Pilgrimage to Walsingham. But we carry on…

Mary Howe

Worksop Wiggly Worship

We continue to meet – online – for our activities, including visual presentations via live streaming. Please look out on the Priory School website [priory-academy.online] and select “Curriculum” then scroll down to “FSU”; or contact Helen Hurt on 07432 026253.

If and when we are able to return to something like ‘normal’ life, our usual pattern is for us to meet every Thursday from 10am to 11am, as we open the doors of the Lady Chapel to our pre-school youngsters and to their adults.

We have an informal time of song, prayer and story; this is followed by refreshments for all as the youngsters occupy themselves with a craft activity or toys whilst the adults enjoy their play, join in, or just have chance for a nice chat.

Eastertide and Our Lady’s Month of May

Easter has gone and was celebrated by the laity this year in a way that was different to any other. Yet we were able to walk with Jesus as he made this way to the cross and to realise t hat without the cross there would be no crown. Then we can think of Mary heartbroken watching the death of her son. Jesus looked down on her with all a son's devotion, gratitude and love for the woman who bore him, and realised she needed someone to look after her when he was gone. Then he saw the one described as the 'disciple whom Jesus loved' who was probably Saint John. Jesus loved all of his disciples but John was particularly close to him. Jesus also realised that John needed someone else to be his best friend once he had gone. So Jesus recommended these two whom he loved to care for each other. He said to Mary “Woman here is your son” and to John “Here is your mother”. So Jesus referred to the two people he loved most, to befriend and care for each other.

Most of us, but not all of us have had loving parents whose love for us will continue to grow into eternity. Yet we also need to be assured of the motherly love for us of the mother of Jesus, and we should all love Mary with a childlike devotion. To us too, Jesus says “Behold your mother”, and Mary who had known the sense of loss which came by watching her own son die, will sympathise with us all through the worst moments of our lives. God says to Mary when speaking about you and me “You shall have sons and daughters” in your care throughout the lands. Jesus wants us to honour her as he did, and rejoice in her motherly love and sympathy.

So during this month of May and as we find ourselves isolated in our homes, some with others, some completely on their own. We can reflect on the courage that Mary had during her life. We pray for her companionship during this time of uncertainty and her courage as we journey into the unknown.

Bishop Glyn writes:In response to the Coronavirus pandemic, Pope Francis wrote to the faithful on 25 April to "encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May".

The Bishop of Fulham made a video on how to pray the rosary before the current restrictions on the use of churches came into place: https://bishopoffulham.org.uk/praying-the-holy-rosary/

The Society of Mary and Cell of Our Lady of Walsingham

We continue to pray the Rosary! Please join us online every day at 6pm at the Facebook page site of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham [Anglican] for Shrine Prayers. These prayers begin at 6pm with the ringing and reciting of the Angelus, and then continue with one of the four Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

The prayers are transmitted live, but they can be watched at any time afterwards; they are led from the Holy House within the Shrine Church by one of the Priests or Sisters connected with the Shrine [including Fr Kevin Smith, a former curate of this parish]. We will continue to encourage all to do this as long as we are prohibited from praying in our own church building; the last Thursday of each month at 6pm is our regular time for this. Guidance can be given to help in this beautiful and effective way of prayer.

We still look forward to our annual Pilgrimage to Walsingham on 13-15th November.

What is the Priest doing at Mass? [Part i]

One outcome of the present situation is our ‘live streaming’ of Masses by Fr Spicer and myself, and it is really great that people are taking part in this. One consequence of watching the Mass – recorded live at our dining-room makeshift altars – and participating with [seemingly] no one else present is that the watcher, given a very clear view of the altar and without other distractions, is able to follow the entire Mass, and so to notice certain things about the Mass that one may not previously have been aware of. But what are they all about? Why does the Priest do all this?

For instance, one might see the Celebrant kissing the Altar at the very beginning and end of Mass: for the Altar is not any table, it is the Lord’s Table; the place where we have physical, real, encounter with Him; the Table where He consecrates bread and wine into His own Body and Blood; the Table where His sacrificial death is proclaimed. The Priest’s kiss acknowledges all of this, as well as the relationship which he – and the People of God which he represents – has with the Altar.

Because the Mass is the action of the entire People of God, nearly all of it is recited aloud. There are, nevertheless, a few short prayers in the Mass which are recited by the Priest silently: their purpose is simply to help him – a sinful human like all other members of the Church – engage with his duty of leading that People in their act of union with God.

The first series of these silent prayers is connected with the Gospel reading. The Priest bends low towards the altar and prays, “Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel”. So the Priest is making acknowledgement of both his own unworthiness and of the greatness of the task entrusted to him. [A similar prayer is said by the Priest for a Deacon, if the Deacon is reading the Gospel – that was why, last year, as a Deacon, I had to bow before Fr Spicer or whoever was Principal Celebrant that day and pray for his blessing on me.]

The Priest [or Deacon] then announces Gospel reading and marks the Gospel Book with a cross; and after the end of the reading kisses the book – for the same reason that the Priest kisses the Altar. He then silently says “Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away” – a quiet prayer for the People he has ministered to in proclaiming God’s Word.

Recipes from the Caribbean [via London SE13]: Curry GoatA former Curate here, Fr Corbett, was until recently Vicar in Lewisham; I was lucky enough to be on placement there whilst training for Ordination and so got to eat some fantastic food. The following is one such dish, which serves 4.

- 1kg [2lb 4oz] lean goat meat- Juice of ½ lime- 2 tbsp mild curry powder- 2 tbsp all-purpose seasoning- 6 tbsp sunflower or groundnut oil- 425ml [¾ pint] vegetable stock- 1 onion- 2cm [¾ piece] root ginger, finely chopped- 1 hot red chilli; seeds left in, chopped- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped- 10 allspice berries- ½ red pepper and ½ green pepper, both deseeded and cubed- 2 spring onions, green part only, roughly chopped- 2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley- 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander- Salt & pepper- 2 waxy potatoes, cut into chunks

Wash the meat and pat it dry with kitchen paper. It’s fine if there are some small bones in it as they’re good for flavour. Cut into large chunks and then put in a large bowl with the lime juice, curry powder and all-purpose seasoning. Turn it over with your hands to get it well coated. Leave to marinate for 4 hours in the fridge.

Heat a large non-stick casserole or heavy-based saucepan until it is very hot and then add the oil. When the oil is very hot put the goat in and turn the chunks over with a wooden spoon to coat the meat in oil. Cover with a lid, turn the heat right down to very low and leave it to simmer for 45 minutes. The goat will sweat in its own gravy, locking in all the juices with none of the usual browning or boiling - this is the way it’s done! Keep checking the pot to make sure the meat isn’t getting scorched on the bottom.

After 45 minutes add 150ml [¼ pint] of the stock, bring to the boil, turn the heat right down, cover and leave again to simmer. After another 45 minutes repeat this with another 150ml of stock and cook for another 45 minutes.

Page 19: media.acny.uk€¦  · Web viewIndividuals who wish to make representations to the PCR2 process, or who need to come forward with information, or make any disclosures regarding church

Add the onion, ginger, chilli, garlic and allspice and stir gently. Add the rest of the ingredients – except the potato and rice but including the rest of the stock – and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down again, cover and cook for another 2 hours, stirring from time to time. Keep an eye on it and add more stock if it seems dry. 20 minutes before the end of cooking time add the potatoes and gently stir them in.
