ABOUT BAUER MUSIC GROUP

Bauer Music Group is Europe's biggest privately owned magazine publishing company. The massive music magazine company offers over 600 magazines, 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV based media in 17 different countries. The group has a workforce of over 11000 in these countries.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

• In 1875, Ludolph Bauer started up a printing company that specialized in business cards. He was just 23 when he decided to do this. He also started the local advertising newspaper called the Rothenburgersorter Zeitung. Others followed such as Extrablatt am Montag. Then in 1936, he decided to launch a radio newspaper called the Rundfunk-Kritik, which achieved sales of over half a million each week. The company now has offices in 17 countries and has equity of over $2.2 billion.

• During World War 2, in 1941, the Bauer family was forced to stop production because of shortages of paper, and later on during the was, the publication house was destroyed/severely damaged by air raids.

• In 1986, the first magazine was released. This was called Q Magazine. This was later followed by Bella in 1987 and in 1990, the company had massive interest in their latest magazine called Take a Break.

• Then in 1991, Bauer introduced their first TV based magazine. This magazine would show all of the TV programs that were on during the day. This was called TV Quick magazine.

KERRANG

• In 2004, Bauer released their biggest and best selling magazine to date. This was called Kerrang. Kerrang was a music magazine giant, which contained everything from gossip of bands to exclusive interviews with different bands popular at the time of release.

• Kerrang was originally devoted to music such as heavy rock and metal bands.• It has a range of different audiences. This is because there is many different genres of rock music. For

example, Kerrang! Release interviews pop punk bands such as You Me at Six and Pierce the Veil, whilst still interviewing more child friendly bands such as 5 Seconds of Summer.

• It also shows how music has evolved over the years.

BBC WORLDWIDE

• BBC Worldwide is a small magazine company that is part of the broadcasting giant BBC. It is mainly used to promote BBC products and brands.

• In 2013/14, the company gained profits of around £157 million and sales of around £1 Billion. And it returned £173 million to the BBC.

• In 1991, BBC World Service became the first BBC broadcasting operation, that was commercially funded. This is because the foreign office refused to pay for it. BBC Enterprises was changed in 1995 as BBC Worldwide.

• In 2004, BBC Worldwide partly owned 2 Entertain, which was BBC Video and VCI formed together.• In 2007, BBC Worldwide bought 75% of the publisher Lonely Planet. Then later on in 2011, bought the

remaining 25%.• In 2009, BBC Worldwide was awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise.• In 1995 the Headline Sales of BBC Worldwide was at £527 million and profit was at £84 million. This

dramatically increased, as in 2011, the Headline Sales was at £1.1 Billion, and profit was at £125 million. This shows that the business was a massive success.

• This magazine is released monthly, and has been available since June 1992.

• Warner Music Enterprises and BBC were the original owner and publisher.

• The magazine includes a mixture of different articles. For example in 2009, the magazine company asked 10 composers to discuss the latest trends in Western Classical music in the 21st century.
