Mr Robert A. Ivy Fellow of the American Institute of Architects; and Executive Vice President/ Chief Executive Officer, American Institute of Architects (United States of America)

Robert A. Ivy, FAIA, is the EVP/Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. Since assuming management responsibility, Ivy initiated two important investigations into the role of architects in society and the future of architecture practice. In partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative, Ivy committed the AIA to a decade-long effort to make design a catalyst for improving public health through research grants, digital programs, and community planning. Expanding awareness and understanding of architects’ essential role motivated Ivy to launch a comprehensive effort to build a responsive and relevant 21st Century AIA that advances the position of architects and bolsters a national dialogue about the central role architecture plays in our everyday life. A primary goal of this repositioning initiative is to update the role of the AIA in light of the social, economic, and creative challenges facing the profession. Prior to joining the AIA, Ivy was Vice-President & Editorial Director of McGraw-Hill Construction and Editor-in-Chief of Architectural Record, where he also oversaw 16 print and 17 digital publications. Through his long tenure, Ivy established himself as a spokesperson for the profession on important issues, such as the effect of architecture on climate and social and political questions involving the built environment. Under his direction, Architectural Record garnered numerous awards, including 26 Jesse H. Neal Awards for magazine journalism and a rare distinction for a trade journal, the National Magazine Award for General Excellence conferred by the American Society of Magazine Editors. In 2009, Ivy received the G.D. Crain Award, for his lifetime contributions to editorial excellence in business media. In 2010, Alpha Rho Chi, a national architecture fraternity, named Ivy a “Master Architect.” Selected for his contributions to communicating the value of design both within the fraternity and to the larger world, he serves in an honorary, mentoring role with students and alumni. Ivy is an accomplished communicator, having delivered numerous keynote speeches at U.S. and international events and interviewed leading figures in architecture. His book, Fay Jones: Architect, was cited for the “highest standards of scholarship, design, and production.” He has also served three times as the U.S. Commissioner at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Ivy earned an M.Arch. degree from Tulane University, and a BA (cum laude) in English from the University of the South (TN). He is a member of CICA, the International Circle of Architecture Critics.

Mr Dick Powell Co-Founder Seymourpowell (United Kingdom)

Dick Powell is co-founder of internationally renowned design and innovation company Seymourpowell. Dick is the current Chairman of D&AD, and has twice been president of D&AD. As Chairman, Dick is a mentor to the team at D&AD and strives to call on the government and business leaders to recognise the value of embedding design and creativity into the DNA of British businesses. Dick has appeared on numerous radio and television programmes alongside business partner Richard Seymour, and has sat on the boards of the Design Council, the Design Business Association and the D&AD Executive. Dick was global design advisor to Samsung Electronics and was a member of the DesignSingapore Council’s International Advisory Panel from 2004 to 2011. Founded in 1984, Seymourpowell has produced some of the ‘milestone’ products of the last two decades, including designs for the world’s first cordless kettle and pocket mobile phone. The company’s design innovation work ranges from consumer appliances, electronics and mobile phones, to transportation, including cars, motorcycles, trains and planes. The company has risen to a commanding position on the international stage, with clients as diverse as Unilever, Panasonic, Tefal, LG, Nestle and Diageo. Recent highlights include concept design work for the Virgin Galactic spacecraft as well as a concept design for Samsung Construction and Trading called Aircruise – a giant, vertical airship powered by natural energy and designed to carry travellers in style and luxury. Other specializations include ethnographic user research, strategy and new product development (NPD), trends and forecasting, product design and development, and 3D structural design and 2D graphic design. Using Seymourpowell’s wide-angled approach, fuelled by parallel knowledge and experience, the company also works with large FMCG companies to re-engineer the fragmented and misunderstood innovation process. With over 30 years experience, Dick Powell believes passionately that design is not just about being different or more stylish, but about being better - better primarily for people and ultimately therefore also business and the world. Dick and Richard took this idea to television, making 12 programmes for Channel 4 (Equinox, Designs on Your..., and Better by Design) that followed the development of new products, from the genesis of new ideas through to making them happen. They brought fresh thinking to kitchen bins, razors, burglar alarms, the economy airline seat and the all-important shopping trolley. Most famously perhaps was the design of a bra for the bigger bust, and an innovative toilet. In his presentations, Dick describes his role as ‘visioneering’: creating innovative designs for things people desire and providing vision and focus for clients.
