QUESTION 4.

AGE CERTIFICATION…

For this question I felt I should undertake some research of different

age certification categories. This helped me to get a better

understanding of possible age categories for my own product.

EXAMPLES OF EXISTING MEDIA PRODUCTS

After this, I did some research into the most common age rating for thrillers. Here are the

examples I have found all are rated 15, which I found to be the most common.

These two films both have content in which suits the age rating

WHAT WOULD I RATE MY OWN MEDIA TEXT?

After some brief thought, I came to a decision. My opening sequence is merely a teaser to what is in store for the rest of the film, by only showing the first two minutes I am unable to foretell the

amount of sex, violence, or language ect… that could change the rating of the film. However I have decided based upon watching several real media products opening sequences I have decided that I

feel my film should also be rated 15. I came about this decision because I feel that during my opening sequence violence is implied. Even though my opening sequence contains no violence, sexual

activities references, swearing or anything deemed inappropriate, given the genre of my film – a thriller, it is likely that all of those things will happen, and based on my opening extract there will

most definitely a bit of each of those. However, the amount would not be so much so that it would hit the 18 age rating boundaries.

Another reason why I felt my media product would be rate a 15, is due to audience feedback. A while back, I created a

questionnaire and I asked for a range of feedback from my peers, friends and family and their responses gave me the inspiration for my ideas. All responses were from people

aged 15-17 therefore their responses are suited to the age range I feel my product is, as what I created suited the conventions I needed to create. Had my feedback been form people aged 30+ my responses would have been

completely different, making the age rating of my product possibly different.
