Question 3: What have you learnt from audience feedback?

While I was creating my soap opera trailer and ancillaries, I had to establish which audience, so I could aim my video and ancillaries at that audience from the start. I found that on E4 it contains mostly programs aimed at 18-24 year olds. I collected information from that audience to see how I could have improved my video.

Firstly I had to look at current programs that are shown on E4, the channel I would intend to broadcast my soap on, and how they show their target audience and appeal towards them.

From the images above, we can see that most of the programs on E4 are aimed at the 18-24 year old age bracket, and we can see this through the fact that the main stars are usually between these ages. Referring to Judith Butlers theory of gender performance, the girls are generally wearing makeup or putting makeup on, or doing their hair, this is something which is seen as a generally female trait. In our soap opera though, we have a boy putting makeup on. We have done this so they we establish our audience through the use of male and female characters, but we’ve changed it to make it a different type of storyline.

“Some parts of the clip didn’t fit in with the genre”

From this audience feedback I took the line out so that the trailer was

more serious, and it fit more accurately instead of using humour

where it wasn’t needed and wouldn’t fit.

“Fade to black after each scene”

I chose to do this and change it in my trailer because it caused it to have a more professional look

and feel to it.

“Crop in to the star on the scream”

From my audience feedback I saw that you could see one of the casts

leg in the shot. So I amended this by cropping in on the star so that you

couldn’t see. This also meant that the audience could see the stars

emotions more easily.

“Could be made better by matching the music speed

with the situation”

If I was to do the project again I would definitely take this into

account when making the trailer, as I find it would be much more

professional if I did.

“Add more title cards so you can easily tell the story”

If I was to do the project again I would include more title cards, it will

make it easier for the audience to understand the storyline and the plot

of the trailer.
