What is HydrogenHydrogen is the most abundant elementknown in the universe. On Earth it is chemically bound with oxygen in water and is present in all organic material. Fossil fuel can be described as “hydrogen in a carbon bucket”. The most useful component (the energy vector) of fossil fuel is the hydrogen. When hydrogen combusts or is used in a fuel cell, the principal emission is water vapour, so it is a very clean fuel.

As an energy vector, hydrogen can be usedas a way to convey and store energy. It is potentially one of the most flexible andbroadly applicable energy vectors available. Green HydrogenTraditionally, 95% of hydrogen has been made using fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas), and this has a very high carbon footprint in terms of its production and transportation to the end-user, often referred to as “Brown hydrogen”.

The Role of PEM ElectrolysersThe commercial production of “Green hydrogen” as a clean fuel is only now starting to become viable through the deployment of ITM Power’s rapid response PEM electrolyser systems, that make Green hydrogen through the electrolysisof water, utilising surplus renewable electricity.The Green hydrogen is made at times ofthe day when electricity is surplus to demand –at its lowest price, and when it is greenest.

Originating from water, ITM Power’s hydrogen is very pure, and “fuel cell friendly” PEM Electrolysers could have a role in almost every part of the global energy system, and if hydrogen is produced in a low carbon way it can be used to decarbonise any sector it penetrates.

Supporting the widespread deployment of renewable energy, ITM Power’s PEM electrolyser can turn “on” and “off” in a second so it can grid-balance renewable energy.

As the capacity of wind and PV generation increases, the extent to which the supply of electricity can be adjusted to match demand will reduce, creating opportunities for controllable demand and energy storage to help balance the energy system. Renewable electricity is unable to be scheduled, and so without these demand-side services, wind operators are told to turn down the electricity supply in order to accommodate traditional power stations (that cannot respond “on” or “off” in time), resulting in expensive compensation to generators.

The ITM Power solution, is a demand-side load, the PEM Electrolyser system, that can turn “on” to harness surplus electricity to make renewable clean fuel.

As countries are struggling to meet their carbon reduction obligations, ITM Power’s PEM electrolyser solutions, have finally reached the top of the energy agendas.

Automotive OEMs are rolling out Fuel CellElectric Vehicles (FCEVs). Hyundai commencedproduction of the ix35 fuel cell vehicle in 2014, and Toyota followed through the introduction of the “Mirai” in December 2014. Honda and other OEMs will follow from 2016. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are now being sold and global hydrogen refuelling station infrastructure programmes are underway. ITM Power is supporting the roll-out of fuel cellelectric vehicles by supplying hydrogen refuelling stations. Currently ITM Power have two stations deployed, with a further seven currently in build and to be operational in 2015.

The fuel cell electric vehicle is an electric vehicle that is refuelled in 3 minutes with stored energy, in the form of hydrogen gas, providing the vehicle with a range of around 350miles. The hydrogen being made at times when the electricity supply is “greenest”, and providing a managed form of energy storage for the power industry. This is the only way to achieve ultra low carbon transportation without disruption to today’s social and business routines. It meets multiple policy goals including clean air, sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) targets.

ITM Power Hydrogen stations in buildThree 80kg/day hydrogen stations are being deployed in London in 2015 as part of the pan-European HyFive project.

Two 100kg/day stations with the ability to dispense at both 350 and 700 bar are being built in the USA; one will be located at Hyundai’s technical centre in Chino, CA., the other at the City of Riverside’s Alternative Fuelling Facility close to the 91 Freeway.

A further hydrogen refuelling station is to be deployed at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. The site is close to the junction of the M1 and M18 motorways, and will be an important part of the UK hydrogen infrastructure roll-out

A smaller 15kg/day station will be deployed on the Isle of Wight to refuel a hydrogen powered boat.

The Thüga Group has announced performance of ITM Power’s PEM electrolyser in its Power-to-Gas (P2G) project in Frankfurt, “to exceed expectations”. This is the first PEM electrolyser to inject hydrogen into the German gas distribution network. ITM Power has since won further competitive tenders to supply its PEM electrolysers for Power-to-Gas applications in Germany, including an order from RWE Deutschland AG, reflecting significant engagement with power and utility companies in Germany.

ITM Power has become a leader for the introduction of P2G technology in the USA and Canada. P2G technology was largely unknown in North America a year ago and ITM Power, through a dedicated programme of education and outreach, is now actively pursuing a number of interested parties.

ITM Power Power-to-Gas In 2013 ITM Power deployed its first Power-to-Gas unit and it has now passed the first year of successful operation with Thüga Group. The electrolyser system has undergone an extensivetesting programme and is performing well. In February 2015, the Thüga Group reported that ITM Power’s system has exceeded expectations following completion of a series of comprehensive stress tests, highlighting overall efficiency of over 70%. In addition Thüga declared that the system is technically capable of offering grid balancing services, which increases the economic viability of the technology.

“I would argue that the technology’s deployment is inevitable owing to the amount of renewables coming on stream, and that by 2050 – based on our studies – there is likely to be a need to store as much as 50TWh. The annual storage capacity of the German gas distribution network is about four times larger than this quantity – and that’s the charm of P2G.”

These developments have led the way in decarbonising the production of hydrogen, which is providing opportunities for government to set and realise energy policies to move away from the current dependence on fossil fuels. ITM Power’s differentiation in the market is the range of electrolyser stacks it can offer, allowing for a flexible solution to a variety of scalable projects and applications.

The company is now in a very good position to support the roll-out of fuel cell electric vehicles as well as offering an energy storage solution for increasing renewable energy deployment. ITM Power has proven technology in various markets and applications and the demand for its products is growing.
