is free to download and is available on all the major platforms – iPhone, Android, Blackberry 10 and Windows – though iPhone has far and away the largest share of usage (currently 71 per cent of all RingGo app sessions).
The app allows you to plot your location and your nearest RingGo parking space. Marketing manager Anne Snelson explains: ‘In the early days of social media, we offered a basic search service through Twitter – the RingGo twitterbot – but, once app usage grew, it became clear that this would be the leading technology for payments, so this service is no longer actively supported.
‘The key driver of app usage is signage, so those areas that rolled out since about 2011 – when we first started putting apps on our signs – tend to have
operators as well: a reduction in spending on hardware, higher compliance, and reduced costs – which, in turn, means an increase in parking revenue.
While – for many operators – app usage represents a minority of their total business, the numbers are growing fast. Bemrose Mobile, for example, s ays its Phone and Pay app accounts for slightly more than 20 per cent of its on-street parking trans actions – but that the figure has grown by 17 per cent since last year. The company has received plaudits from the global head of marketing at British Airways, who recently tweeted his delight at receiving a courtesy call from the company just hours after downloading the app.
Broad compatibilityThere are a large and growing number of companies offering parking apps. RingGo’s
These days, there is an app for just about everything – and the parking industry is no exception. Many
drivers are already keen adopters of ways to pay for parking without needing coins for a ticket machine, such as phoning call centres or using text messages for enabled services.
More recently, however, apps have been developed to issue parking payments at the touch of a button; help motorists find available parking spaces; quote prices; accept payments using a variety of methods; and even let you add time to an existing parking-payment ticket.
To save even more time and effort, the apps can remember the motorist’s details, so users do not have to log in with their vehicle registration and payment particulars each time they use the service.

The popularity of parking apps continues to rise, with far-reaching consequences for motorists and parking operators , as Tim Gillett reports

upon the idea of a car park,’ said Whitley. ‘The idea behind the project is to escape the associations of traditional performance spaces for the art form in order to, hopefully, enable audiences to engage with something they might not have come across otherwise. Car parks seemed like a perfect option, as they aren’t normally used for any kind of performances so don’t have any existing associations for potential new audiences.’
A lot of work goes into preparing for each event. This summer, Multi-Story has been wowing the audiences with its performance of Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony.
The hours leading up to the performance are spent installing a lighting rig, carting in tons of steel-deck staging, borrowing and
transporting more than 200 chairs and benches from local schools, and assembling a battery of percussion on the seventh floor of a 10-storey building. ‘And the lift was broken,’ adds Whitley with a smile.
Breathing life into old facilityOver the past few years, the duo had tried a number of different venues, bars, clubs, warehouses and museums, but in the end they settled on this largely disused car park in Peckham. It had been built to serve a planned supermarket, but the store was never finished and most of its 10 levels are empty, but the views across London from the higher levels are spectacular. When Whitley explains that she wants people
Imagine turning up at your local car park and finding a 65-piece orchestra in full swing on level two, or a pop-up bar on
the seventh floor of the town’s multi-storey, or a grafitti artist in the car park stairwell showing kids how to spray paint as part of an urban sports festival.
These are not examples of acts of rebellion against the use of the car or an anarchist group of artists running riot in council-run establishments, rather they are examples of innovative ways local authorities are making use of car park facilities during times of low usage, creating new revenue streams and building links with the community.
Kate Whitley is creative producer and co-founder of Multi-Story, the orchestral
group that belts out the classics from the depths of a car park in Peckham Rye in South London.
Along with co-founder and conductor, Chris Stark, Whitley has been running the car park productions for the past four years.
Another levelWhy a car park? Generally, they are seen as impersonal, quite ugly and often with a slightly unpleasant odour to them. Why would an orchestra, or an audience for that matter, decide a car park was a good venue?
‘Multi-Story is about bringing classical music to new audiences, and we were looking for a big, neutral, industrial space for an orchestral performance when we hit
Let’s be honest, a multi-storey car park is the last place you would go for a night out... isn’t it? Sarah Juggins finds there is a new culture taking shape out there

RSA GETS RETAILERS THINKING
Tennis at Tesco? A late night drinks bar at B&Q? Last Night of the Proms in Primark? It is not just local authorities who are dreaming up innovative ways to use their car parks. A government think tank has suggested that private companies such as the retail giants could use their car parks for other, community-focused activities during quiet periods.
The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) says the move could help to make up for cuts to public spending and may convince the public that the retail giants are interested in developing the community and improving local areas.
Matthew Taylor, RSA chief executive, said: ‘With many physical spaces for public connection – libraries and community centres for example – closing down due to public sector austerity, the retail giants can make a real difference by opening up their stores for local community use and supporting community initiatives.’
Among the suggestions was transforming parts of car parks at quiet periods, such as daytimes during school holidays, into leisure facilities such as basketball courts or drive-in cinemas. Other suggestions included installing temporary skating rinks, swimming pools, fun fair rides, go-kart tracks, climbing walls or offering rides on animals.
Fees from such initiatives could then be used to fund in-store
community projects, such as training or homework clubs.
Paul Kelly, a spokesperson for Asda, who collaborated on the report, said the firm was ‘committed to doing our bit to help customers through tough times’.
