MEMORANDUMTo: Hillary, Maggie, Melanrie (cc: Neel, Patt i )Fr: LisaRe: Suggested Media Strategy for U Fotirth World Conference on

    WomenDt: August 30,. 1995.I

Throughout your t r ip , t i s important for us to u n d ~ r s c o r eyour longstanding work and advocacy on behalf of women, :t:amiliesand children.. I t i s important to s t ress the interconnec"t;ion.between t h e ~ ~ issues: I f women f lourish, famil ies f l o u r i ~ heconomies f lourishand therefore communities and socie t ies arehealthy, strong and f lourishing. This wil l prbvide the mediawith a context for your t r i p to Beij ing and wil l also s ~ asthe uni t ing theme, ty ing together your t r ips to Beijing, ;Copenhagen and South Asia, and your speeches to the UN to a l l ofthe work that you have done here a t home domestical ly on :behalfof women, families and children not j us t as Firs t Lady but overthe past 25 years. While. you are in ~ e i j i n g carol Browner, AnnBryan.and Betsy Myers wil l serve as the principle spokespeople orvoices for. the conference here a t home. 1

. .. II th ink to re inforce the notion of bringing your t r ip toBeijing home, t i s important to schedule some l i s t e n i n g : s e s s i o n ~following the Atlanta and Santa Fe models upon your return. These events wil l serve to visual ly and substantively connectyour t r i p to the UN Women's Conference to women in the UnitedStates I would propose doing one. or two with working women andone with young women (college or la te high school age). 1 Theevent with young women could be pegged to the b ~ c k to s6hool"theme and would communicate the importance to invest ing theeducation of young women to the overal l heal th of our ec9nomy andour society. The reason I suggest both working women and youngerwomeri events i s to draw a connection between the two. Investingin and educating gi r l s and younger women leads to working womenwho wil l contribute to a heal thy and prosperous society. :

. . lIn addition to scheduled events, we should give s o m ~ thought .to potent ia l media opportunit ies . I have.some thoughts V Thich Ihave outlined below. Maggie, Melanne and I agree tha t we do notwant to make any commitments a t th is time and want to s tay f lu id. to see how things go in China. I general ly propose some Ipressopportunit ies while on the t r ip , followed by a ser ies o f ~ p r e s sopportunit ies .when you re turn as a way to repor t back. tol theAmerican people, par t icular ly American women, on your t r ip . Witha l l th is . in mind, here are some suggested press opportunit ies aridposs ible dates w i t ~ the goal of r id ing out the posi t ive ~ ~ e s scoverage and posi t ive press re la t ions we hope to gain on th ist r ip . I make a l o t of suggestions so tha t you have a number ofdi f fe ren t options from which to pick and choose: 1OPY

    10) Town MeetingsjQ and-A S ~ s s i o n s with Special ized or T ~ r g e t e dAudiences - - I think tha t Hil lary thr ives in venues tha t :arete levised town meeting-l ike or question and answer format:s with a

s p e c i a l i ~ e d a u d i e n c ~ . The CBS This Morning program with theaudience of mothers for Mother 's Day i s a wonderful exampte. Ithink t would be wonderful to look for more oppor tuni t ies l iketha t which are good for Hil lary and play so posi t ively ini themedia. Perhaps we could think about a town meeting with 'parents(maybe, we could peg'one around Child Health Day in New o ~ k onOctober 2 since tha t i s already on HRC s schedule) , a townmeeting with senior c i t izens , a town meeting with chi ldreh (l ikewe are planning to do with the Today Show around ~ i l l a r y ~ book),a town meeting with veterans around Veterans Day. We.could dothese types of events in key pol i t i ca l regions of tha couhtry andwe could work ' to have them te levised e i ther nat ional ly by: amorning show or loca l ly through an a f f i l i a t e or PBS.. I11) Parenting magazines - - There are 3-4 of these publicationsand Hil lary recently wrote a piece for one of them about ~ h e l s e a .I think t makes sense for Hil lary to do something with each oneof these publicat ions e i ther in . the form of an interview rwriting a guest piece. t think t is important for her t6 s t ressthe intergenerational theme with these publications. For'example, she could write or t a lk about how her mother ra ised her

. . Iand what she 1n turn learned from her mother 1n the way s ~ e hasra ised Chelsea. She could write or ta lk about how her f r iendshave chosen different ways to ra ise a family e i the r by being ful ltime mothers or being working mothers, and how each parent;: needsto make the choice tha t i s r igh t for them.i2) Internet - - s Karen has said, Internet has become a yerypopular mode of communication. Hil lary could speak to youngwomen through Internet . I think Hil lary would have fun w ~ t ht h i s , and I believe t would: not be too di f f i cu l t to organize. We could invi te women's media ie . the women's magazines) iin towatch her do such an event. I t would makefor a nice sto:r:y in awomen's magazine. In addit ion, People magazine i s t inker ing with theposs ib i l i ty of using Internet . They have been in touch wfth meabout the prospect of having Hil lary communicate with parentsacross the country about children.and famil ies through I n ~ e r n e t .They would then run the t ranscr ip t in the magazine. This couldbe rea l ly nice idea. They are s t i l l in t h ~ research s t ~ g e andI am waiting to hear back from them. .
