OUR HISTORY

We are San Diego State University’s independent, student-run newspaper, serving the more than 36,000 students and 4,000 faculty members on campus. We began in 1913 as The Normal

News. In 1921, we changed our name to The Paper Lantern, and then to The Aztec in 1925. In 1960, we became The Daily Aztec, and so we’ve remained for 50 years.

The Daily Aztec is a non-profit organization that receives no state funding and is financially and editorially independent of San Diego State University. In order to be sustainable, we offer advertising to help local and national businesses target our young demographic of college students.

The Daily Aztec is the second largest publication in San Diego, publishing a daily newspaper Monday through Thursday and circulating over 10,000 per day through print and online. The Daily Aztec staff is unique in that it contains no faculty; all of the editors, writers, designers, and advertising staff are students, making the organization truly “student-run.”

WHY PRINT?

• Print advertising is the easiest way to catch the attention of SDSU students

• As they peruse the various articles, advertisements are placed in key locations to grasp the attention of the reader

• An effective ad will run multiple times throughout the semester in order to generate name recognition with the readers

• Color is another effective tool to maximize the return on a print advertisement

• A full-color ad jumps off the page when placed next to a black and white article

• Print advertising rates are based off the size and frequency that they are run

• The Daily Aztec has a print circulation of 10,000
