CONSISTENCY IS KEY AS LADY PACERS

strive for history-making season

In 2005, USC Aiken softballposted a first in the NCAA history ofthe program—the Lady Pacers won34 games. Head Coach Jerry Snyderalso led his team to back-to-back 30-plus win seasons for the second timein his 13-year NCAA coachingcareer. So what’s on deck for theLady Pacers this year? A try for athird-straight 30-win season, a top-half Peach Belt finish, and a first-ever birth to the NCAA South AtlanticRegional Tournament. This may sound a little highreaching for the average team, butnot for the very experienced andtalented 2006 Lady Pacer squad.Coach Snyder has made it very clearwhat his goals are for his team thisseason. “Our expectation right off the batis finishing higher than what we werepicked [in the Peach BeltConference],” Coach Snyder said. And with reigning powerhousesNorth Florida and Kennesaw Statedeparted to NCAA Division I, a shotat a PBC Crown and a regional birthis very possible for USC Aiken. “With those losses in ourconference [North Florida andKennesaw State], we have a morerealistic expectation to make it to

regionals for the first time in thehistory of theprogram,” CoachSnyder said. “And in order toreach our main goal[a region birth] wehave to accomplishour first, which is tofinish high in thePBC.” What is CoachSnyder’s formula forending in the top halfof the conference, thus getting a regionbid? Consistency. “The whole seasonwill boil down toconsistency,” Snyderdefied. “We have to be consistentfrom game to game in order toachieve our goals.” With five starters returning to theline up, it can be sure the LadyPacers have the talent andexperience to achieve their goals.Snyder will count on his stand outpitching staff as well as team leaderSarah Harvey to bring a positiveenergy to the team. “She [Harvey] is just a great playerall around, and she’s got heart to goalong with a great bat,” Snyder said.“She holds the team together on andoff the field.” Coach Snyder also knows that agreat offense begins with a stellardefense. Thus, in comes a verytalented and powerful pitching staff. “I believe our staff is one of thebest in our conference and ourregion,” Snyder said. “We’ve definitelygot the best one-two punch and withthe exception of one or two teams,Oakley and Blair can really lead in theconference.” His offense will boil down to bigbats from his six returning players aswell as his seven newcomers. “We’ve got four or five kids thatcan knock it out of the park every at

bat and three or four others that willbe a constant threat to steal bases,”Snyder said. “But again, the key willbe to put all our good piecestogether, pitching, defense, andoffense, and doing that consistently

from game togame.”

PITCHING The Lady Pacersdefense will bestrongly anchoredby senior StacieOakley, who had astellar debut yearlast season. TheYoung HarrisCollege transferbroke the recordbooks for USC

Aiken in just oneseason. Her 225strikeouts shatteredthe single season

record and her 15 strikeouts in onegame also broke the school record. Oakley now currently holds therecord for most innings pitchedduring her 14 on the mound againstNorth Florida on Feb. 12, 2005. Thatrecord also ties the most inningspitched in a single game in thePeach Belt Conference. In just oneseason, Oakley has also broken intothe ranks of many career records atUSC Aiken. She is ninth inappearances (46), tied for tenth inwins (14), 11th in complete games(18), and her 225 strike outs issecond all-time. The number two on the mound, junior Samantha Blair, is also

INFIELD Coach Snyder’s biggest loss onthe infield will be replacing thirdbaseman Brooke McSwain. McSwainstarted in all 51 games last seasonand had some big offensive numbersfor the Lady Pacers. Snyder isbringing in freshman Megan Lakes, from Spring Valley High School inColumbia, S.C., to try her at third.Surprisingly enough,Lakes was regardedas one of the bestpitchers in the statelast year but Snyderhas seen a greaterpotential for her inthe college game atthird base. Junior AshleyDyches will be backat first for the LadyPacers and willmake big defensivestops on the infield.Snyder regards heras the best firstbaseman in theconference and willuse her to also bringin offense for USCAiken. Sophomore Amber Driggers, whowas Harvey’s back up at second basein 2005, will begin her second seasonas a starter for Coach Snyder atsecond. Driggers will see more timeat bat this season as well as being akey part of USCA’s defense. Two freshman will both get timebehind the plate for the Lady Pacers.Jessica Strickland, from NorthCharleston, S.C., is thought to havebeen one of the best high schoolcatchers in South Carolina.Strickland’s rocket for an arm willmake defensive stops and allow forvery few stolen bases. MeredithMoore, from Guyton, Ga., will be thenext catcher in for USCA. Senior Karlee Haynes will see timeat multiple positions for USC Aiken.Last season, Haynes split catching

OUTFIELD Senior TemekaFloyd is anotherteam leader for USCAiken. According toCoach Snyder, Floyd“runs the outfield,

she’s the one makingsure things get doneout there.” Floyds’

.337 batting average was a teambest in 2005, and her 21 runs wasone of the top three on the LadyPacer squad. To her right in the field will besenior Kasey Mills, who was a two-year member of the USC Aikenwomen’s basketball team and had afew at bats for the Lady Pacers lastseason. This year, with just softballto concentrate on, Mills’ power at batcan be counted on for big offensiveplays for USC Aiken. In left field will be LouisburgCommunity College transfer, KeshiaVenable, who posted exceptionalnumbers in her first two seasons atLCC. Venable batted .367 lastseason and was a First-Team All-Region selection. WHAT IS A PACER? Pacers, and their cousins Trotters, are horses bredand trained to race in harness or sulky races. The driversits precariously on the sulky with the crop, or whip, inhand. A Pacer’s right front and back leg hit the ground atthe same time, alternating side to side. USC Aiken’s original mascot was “The Rebel” withthe logo depicted as an old “Confederate Man”. USCAquickly changed to “The Pacer” which more accuratelysymbolized the community. Aiken, S.C., is a prominentwinter training ground for racehorses. Every spring, the city hosts the “Aiken Triple Crown”with the Trials first, the Steeplechase next, and finallyPolo (sponsored by the USC Aiken Athletic Department),on the final of three successive weekends.

THE PEACH BELT CONFERENCE

Vision Statement:The Peach Belt Conference is

committed to providing through itsdependent collegiate members, aforum for student participation inathletic, academic and co-curricularevents under the auspices of theNational Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion, Division II.

We will exemplify the characteris-tics of a premier intercollegiateconference that prides itself on theinclusion of students of all demo-graphic groups who wish to partici-pate in a well-rounded sports pro-gram. Our institutions, our academicgoals, our athletic aspirations reflecta communality of purpose and acommitment to excellence in theclassroom and on the playing field.

History:Since its inception in 1991, the

Peach Belt Conference has workedtirelessly to become one of the eliteconferences in NCAA Division II.Now in its 15th season with 23national championships and 20national finalists, the PBC hasaccomplished that goal.

Starting with only two champion-ships in 1991, in men’s and women’sbasketball, the conference hasexpanded to 12 championship sportswith the addition of women’s soccerin the fall of 2000.

The conference traces its rootsback to November of 1988 when 11schools first met in Greenville, S.C.to form a Division II conference.Following a second meeting on Dec.3, 1989 hosted by USC Aiken, five ofthose 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and beganplay in 1991.

The Peach Belt was less than ayear old before capturing a nationalchampionship. The Columbus Stategolf team took the honor by winningthe 1992 national crown, the first of
