TOP STORYLINESKORIR LOOKS FOR FIRST CHICAGO WINWesley Korir, the reigning Boston Marathon champion, is hoping the fifth time is the charm at the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Korir’s history with the race began in 2008 when he paid his own way into the event and started with the masses, five minutes behind the elite athletes, yet still managed to record the fourth-fastest time of the day. Korir was invited as an official elite athlete in 2009 and placed sixth, followed by a fourth place finish in 2010 and second place in 2011 with a personal best 2:06:15.

Despite not yet being able to win in Chicago, Korir has won the L.A. Marathon twice (2009, 2010), and captured this year’s Boston Marathon title in a stunning fashion - rallying from nearly a minute behind the race leader with five miles to go.

A native of Kenya who attended the University of Louisville and still lives and trains in Kentucky, Korir is counting on a large cheering section from his adopted hometown, and hopes this is the year he takes the title.

OLYMPIAN DATHAN RITZENHEIN HOPES FOR BREAKTHROUGH RACEThree-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein is hoping his recent speed training will propel him to a personal best at the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Fresh off competing in the 10,000 meters in London, where he finished 13th in one of the most memorable races of the Olympics, this marks Ritzenhein’s first marathon in Chicago. Ritzenhein trains in Portland, Ore., coached by Alberto Salazar, but grew up less than 200 miles from Chicago in Rockford, Mich. The 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be Ritzenhein’s first marathon since placing fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in January in a personal best 2:09:55, leaving him one spot shy of making the U.S. marathon squad.

SHOBUKHOVA GOES FOR FOUR IN A ROWThree-time defending Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion Liliya Shobukhova will compete for her fourth straight victory, a feat that has never before been accomplished at Chicago’s fall classic. Shobukhova was a pre-race gold medal favorite in the London Olympic Marathon, but was unable to finish due to stomach cramps. She won last year’s race with the third-fastest women’s time in history (2:18:20). A fourth victory would tie her for the most ever in Chicago. Khalid Khannouchi won four times in the span of six years (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002).

PRIZE PURSETOP STORYLINES

WOMEN’S RUNNING BOOMIn this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon, women represent almost 44 percent of the field, and more women ages 25-34 finish the Chicago Marathon than any other marathon in the world. A women’s running boom is in full swing, remarkable considering 40 years ago women made up less than five percent of marathon participants, and women were not permitted to compete in the Olympic Marathon until 1984, when American Joan Benoit Samuelson won the inaugural event. In 2008, road running in the U.S. flipped to more female than male participants and women continue to flock to the sport at a higher rate than men.

$219 MILLION ECONOMIC IMPACTThe Bank of America Chicago Marathon provides a significant boost to the local economy, attracting participants from more than 100 countries and all 50 states who travel to Chicago, filling hotel rooms and dining at local restaurants. According to the annual University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Regional Economics Applications Laboratory (R.E.A.L.) report, the 2011 Chicago Marathon contributed nearly $219 million in economic impact to Chicago, a 28 percent increase over the previous year. Bank of America anticipates another strong event this year. The 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon reached the 45,000-participant capacity in a record six days, 10,000 of whom have indicated they will be visiting Chicago for the first time.

$85 MILLION RAISED FOR CHARITY The Bank of America Chicago Marathon hosts thousands of runners who choose to make their Chicago Marathon experience more meaningful by running on behalf of a charity. This year 10,000 participants are running on behalf of 190 charity partners. A Chicago Marathon record was set last October when charity runners raised $13.4 million. Since 2002, Chicago Marathon runners have raised more than $85 million benefitting local, national and international charities.
