Qualification draw sends Midtjylland against Kragujevac, while FTC face SERCODAK

After the EHF Executive decided on the teams taking part in the Women’s EHF Champions League in the 2014/15 season last Friday, seedings of teams both for the qualification and the group matches draw have been released.

Two tickets from the qualificationThe qualification will be played on 20 and 21 September in two tournaments, winners of which will be awarded with places in the group matches.

The matches from each tournament will be played in one venue with two semi-finals, where teams from Pot 4 will meet teams from Pot 1 and teams from Pot 3 will face teams from Pot 2, followed by finals. After their triumph at the first MVM EHF FINAL4 in Budapest at the beginning of May, Györ’s players completed their season to remember with the domestic crown to boot.

Suffering just one loss from 22 games during the regular season, Ambros Martin’s team finished two points ahead of nearest rivals FTC Rail Cargo Hungaria.

Neither side had much to worry about in the semi-finals and set up two more encounters in the final. Györ did the damage in the first leg at Ferencvaros with a 32:25 win and wrapped it up thanks to a 30:25 win at home, giving them a berth in the Women’s EHF Champions League as two-time reigning winners, while FTC must battle through the qualification in September.

The Montenegrin handball powerhouse HC Budućnost enjoyed another season of great success, having won the domestic league for eighth consecutive time.

2013/14 was truly a magnificent season for the MVM EHF FINAL4 participants Budućnost, who won the regional league undefeated from the likes of WHC Vardar SCBT, as well as enjoying a domestic cup success to complete the famous treble.

Budućnost saw little to no resistance to their title push, having won their last match against Danilovgrad 31:23, to finish their domestic campaign with a perfect record.

Once again Larvik HK were completely untouchable in Norway. For the tenth time in succession and for the 14th time within the past 15 years Larvik won the Norwegian championship. And just like the previous nine years, the team under head coach Ole Gustav Gjekstad took the title in convincing style.

For the tenth season in a row, Larvik went through the league season undefeated. Only one point was lost on their way to the title and just to emphasise their dominating position in women’s handball in Norway, they also won the following play-offs, also for the tenth time in a row.

The indomitable RK Krim Mercator cruised to their milestone 20th Slovenian championship title.

Their final league match win against Gen-I Zagorje at home Arena in Stožice 37:25, was the icing on the cake for Slovenian heavyweight, who took over as the leading force in Slovenian women’s handball from RK Olimpija, before going on to win twenty consecutive domestic titles.

RK Krim Mercator faced the likes of Larvik as well as the MVM EHF FINAL4 participants Györ and Budućnost in the main round of the Women’s EHF Champions League, and will look to impress in the coming season as one of the top seeds ahead of the group matches draw.

Viborg won the Danish championship for the 14th time in history, but it was the first time in four years the ladies from the historic town could lift the trophy after defeating ruling champions FC Midtjylland by a margin of just one goal in the two-legged final. FC Midtjylland had a great season in Europe and managed to qualify for the MVM EHF FINAL4, but in the Danish championship finals they were just not strong enough to prevent a narrow defeat on aggregate against Viborg.

FC Midtjylland won the first match on home court 25:23, and they also had a fine start in the return match in Viborg Stadionhal, but the Cup Winners’ Cup champions came back into the game and ended up winning 24:21, giving the traditional club another title through a 47:46 win on aggregate and access to the Women´s EHF Champions League group phase which they missed last season.

Reaching the EHF Champions League Group Matches for the first time in the club’s history was a tremendous boost for HCM Baia Mare. After a fall of Oltchim empire Baia Mare proved to be a worthy successor in the Romanian Liga Nationala. They took their lesson from an early first defeat by Corona Brasov in November and won all the remaining matches paving their way to the maiden league laurels. In the play off they crushed Zalau in two games with an aggregate score of plus 17 and swept both Corona and Dunarea Braila in the final group of top three sides. Meanwhile, the club managment were already working on the roster bolstering for the next season signing two Brazilian reigning world champions – the All-star goalkeeper Barbara Arenhart and the 2012 World Handball Player of the Year Alexandra do Nascimento. Also Norwegian international winger Camilla Herrem joined the club.

Just like in Sweden and Norway, there were no changes at the top of women’s handball in Germany either.

Thüringer HC took the title once again, and in convincing style as they went through the season undefeated. The title was secured long before the end of the championship league which is formed by the best six teams from the ground series of the Bundesliga.

With two matches left, THC were already ten points ahead of second placed HC Leipzig, and the team under legendary coach Herbert Müller emphasised their dominance by winning the last match of the season 39:31 away against Leipzig who finished second, just like last season.

In the last few years the competition in the Russian championship is becoming more intense and although Dinamo is a regular feature in the finals, this year their opponents were the young Lada Togliatti squad. The final series started in Volgograd and the first match brought lots of excitement when Dinamo took the lead after defeating Lada in penalty shootout, but the surprise came when Lada managed to win the second match away 29:27. After this the final moved to Toggliati, where the two games were shared, with the third match going in Dinamo’s favour 30:26 and Lada once more coming back in the fight for the throne, winning the fourth match 30:26. The decisive match was played in Volgograd and Dinamo dominated the whole match from start to finish, giving Viktor Ryabih’s team the title and a place in Europe’s elite competition after missing out last season.

The bronze medalist from the first MVM EHF FINAL4 had an easy task in the domestic championship, winning the second title in the club’s history with three matches to spare. After securing an easy victory of 45:26 (21:16) against Zito Prilep, the Macedonian dream team defended the trophy and the rest of the championship turned out to be a formality for them.

Vardar dominated the whole championship and won 14 games in total, while only one match ended in a draw, 23:23 against second placed Metalurg.

By beating Issy-Paris two games to nil, Metz won the 20th national title of its history, making this a record. Issy-Paris, the surprise guest in the final after defeating Fleury in the semi-finals, struggled and lost the first leg at home, 22:26, making it an even harder task.

And even though, fifteen minutes from the end of the final game, they had the opportunity to create a significant gap, they did not convert and thanks a superb finish, Metz also won the second leg of the final 26:25.

It was a fitting result for Metz, after finishing the regular season with only two defeats ahead of Fleury and Issy-Paris, who finished third.

Austria’s record winners’ title run was never in doubt as they tore through the league once again this season, winning all 22 league games by an average of 25 goals.Wiener Neustadt were their nearest rivals, joining them in the final ahead of Hypo’s second team, with just three defeats to their name.

The finals were over as a contest as early as half-time in the first leg, as the team laden with World Championship winning Brazilian players took a 37:19 win back home with them and added a 32:24 victory to take the title and book a place in the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches for the 2014/15 season.

It took ten years for RK Lokomotiva Zagreb to repeat their success from 2004, and win their third Croatian championship, dethroning the 20-time champion HC Podravka Vegeta.

The 25:20 last-round win against the former champion was no more than a formality for RK Lokomotiva Zagreb, having previously secured the title with an 11-goal victory against RK Trešnjevka.

The last-round win concluded a seven-match unbeaten run for RK Lokomotiva Zagreb, having won all but one of their league games.

In Sweden, the men’s as well as the women’s championship is decided in only one final match, and the finals for both genders are played on the same day and in the same venue.

This year, Malmö Arena hosted the finals, where 6,723 spectators saw IK Sävehof win the women’s championship for the tenth time in history and for the sixth time in succession.Their opponents in the final, Skuru IK, were really no match for the Sävehof team who impressed in Europe earlier this season by reaching the Women s EHF Champions League Main Round for the first time. Sävehof were leading from the beginning, and after an 18:12 lead at half-time, head coach Henrik Signell s team were even more dominant in the last 30 minutes. Even though Signell rested some of his key players, the Sävehof win was a comprehensive 38:20.

Their return to the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches after ten years last season seemed to be a satisfactory motivation for MKS Selgros Lublin to claim another ticket to the European top flight. However, straight from the main round of the Polish Superleague it was clear that it would be an all but easy task, losing three matches and finishing on the top of standings only one point ahead of Zaglebie Lubin.

That single point proved to be priceless in the play-off as Lublin clinched the home right in the finals. After both rivals met in the final best-of-five series and exchanged blows on their respective home courts in the first four games, Selgros took advantage of the last game played in the Globus Arena and beat Zaglebie 26:22 for their 17th championship title.
