IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND OF REAL MUSIC MAGAZINE?

For my music magazine cover I decided to use a conventional masthead this is similar to others such ‘Kerrang’ which is currently on the market, as it is edgy and informal font. Typically the masthead is at the top of the page, placed behind the main image covering some of the letters.

Typically the main image of my music magazine contains the main artists of the band conventional to other magazine such as ‘NME’ and ‘Kerrang’.On the front cover of my magazine there is a mid-shot image of my model, I decided to do this in order to make her the focal point of the magazine cover as she is apart of the main article. Similarly, ‘ Classic Rock’ has done this in order to attract the fans of the artist at the front. The model for my magazine is wearing black clothing equally, so in ‘ Classic Rock’ magazine I had chosen to do this as the type of clothing associated with the model may represent the genre of my magazine. Both models in the magazine cover have a stern facial expression this again reinforces the genre of the magazine. Also the audience will be able to identify this easily with the facial expression.

My magazine front cover has a plain background in order to make the sell lines and image the focal point of the magazine. Also in order for the audience to be able to pick this magazine without being overwhelmed. This again is similar to the magazine on the left ‘Classic Rock.

The sell lines for my magazine is laid out around the main image so the text is clearly visible this again is similar to many music magazines. I decided to display ‘NADIA + THE BEATS’ on the top of the main image so the audience is able to acknowledge the main article it also shows the that is related to the artist.

The font I have chosen to do is black and bold again fitting the conventions of a magazine.

I placed the price of the magazine in a small font above the bar code on the botton right hand side, this is a common part of the layout. I wanted to display the price of the magazine in a small font as I wanted the content of the magazine to be more important and not the price.

‘Kerrang’ uses a bold masthead with a crackling effect in order to show the genre of rock. Also the masthead is displayed on front of the main image making the name the focal point and making it easy to identify. However I have challenged this convention and placed the masthead behind the main image covering some letters. My masthead also has a thin red bar weaving in and out of the letter. I have done this so it can link to the colour theme of my magazine red, black and grey. I also decided to do this because I wanted my magazine to be original compared to other rock magazines available in the market but still keep the theme of rock.

My magazine has a simple layout in contrast to ‘Kerrang’. I decided to challenge the form of a typical music magazine. I had done this so it allows the readers of my magazine to be able to navigate through the magazine easily. Unlike ‘Kerrang’ I did not display many sell lines linking to the content which would typically be inside my magazine as I want the readers to be able to find information inside rather than on the magazine cover.

I decided to use one main image on the cover page as I wanted to keep it simple music magazines such as ‘Classic Rock’ also do this. I wanted the magazine to be original from the common rock magazines currently available on the market however, I still wanted to keep the sense of rock within the magazine.

Unlike ‘Kerrang’ I linked my main headline ‘NADIA + THE BEATS’ to the colour scheme and masthead head this again shows originality. I did this in order to display this as the main article.

A contrast between my magazine other rock magazines are the strap lines. In my magazine I decided not to over lap the strap lines over the main image as again I wanted to keep the simplicity of the magazine. ‘Kerrang’ may have done this in order to make it stand out to other magazines with the use of bold colours.

Page 4: media evaulation

Conventional to other music magazines I displayed images that will be featured in the magazine. For example I added a screen shot of the double page spread which will be main article of the magazine. This will allow the audience to be able to visually see the content of the magazine with out needed to read the information.

Unlike many other music magazines which have the rock genre, my magazine has organized listings of the content and a summery of what it is about. I did this intentionally in order to give a simple approach to the contents page as I feel other magazines over complicate the contents page, for example ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Rock’ therefore I wanted to challenge this convention.

I decided to add hints of the colour from the magazine cover ‘red and black’ so it looks like they are apart of the same magazine. Therefore I made the two colours apart of the colour theme.

‘Contents’ is in a bold black font and similar to the masthead this was done during the production stage as I wanted it to be associated with the magazine and look like a main part of the magazine.

Page 5: media evaulation

I displayed the term ‘exclusive’ on the double page spread to show its the key article of the magazine. This is conventional to magazines as it is used in order to show that this is article is original and only available in this magazine.

Again I incorporated the colours of the magazine in the double page spread so that this looks like it is apart of the magazine. Similarly many magazines may do this.

When planning my magazine cover, contents page and double page spread I wanted to develop on the forms of music magazines. However I used conventional themes throughout the pages as I did not want to loose the identity of the rock magazine. I feel I was successful in doing so, this is evident through my annotation and evaluation my magazine production

The way in which the model is positioned is unconventional to the rock genre as the models tend to display a serious facial expression. But after consideration and planning I did not want to do so as I believe the colour themes and the layout of the page already displayed a sense of seriousness and darkness, I thought this will also be over whelming. Therefore I decided to challenge the convention and allow the model to display a happy facial expression so its more inviting for the audience.

WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT? AND HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

From research I had collected by looking at similary genres of magazines such as ‘Kerrang’ the age range that I wanted to target was the 17-20 years old However, as more younger people are starting to have an interest in the latest trends and music I believe it's best to lower the age range. Thus I have chosen the age range of 15-20 years old.

I also wanted to be able to cater for both genders. This will increase the success of the magazine as it would enable a wider target audience rather than targeting a small amount of audience.

Typically the audience for my media product would be people who are interested in largely music but who are also interested in the latest trends and fashion, gossip and tour dates as these subjects would be associated with my magazine again in order to meet a larger audience range.

As my magazine costs ‘£2.95’ which is expensive compared to other music magazines on the market , the audience needs to be able to have spare money in order to purchase this magazine. This could mean they have an income from their parents.

Page 7: media evaulation

The audience will also need to be able to have spare time and take an interest in reading the content of the magazine. Therefore my media product best suits 15-20 year olds.

On the contents page of my magazine there is a blackberry barcode displayed this again shows my audience need to be interceded in technology and want to be updated in the magazine.

Using Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ the audience members of my magazine needs to be ‘self-actualizing’ so they are people who are concerned with personal growth and trying to find out who they are. They also need to be self aware and less interested in peoples opinions.

HOW DID YOU ATTRACT / ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?

• I used simple terminology as I was attracting a young age groups of 15-20 year olds therefore I did not want to over complicate the language as people wanted to escape from worldly matters. I opted for not using chatty language in the double page spread as this would take a music magazine and become a gossip magazine. But I used some forms of informal texts as I wanted to represent the young audience.

• I chose to use ‘red and black’ as the main colours as I intended to use colours that would appeal to both genders. By doing this I did not give the impression that the magazine was aimed at one gender group.

• By using an attractive female model it would attract male readers, it will also allow the females audience member to aspirer to be like her. Again attracting an audience.
