Passport Seva to provide info on smartphones Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ludhiana/Passport-Seva-to-provide-info-on-smartphones/articleshow/25403681.cms TNN | Friday, 08 Nov 2013 Mode: Online Edition: LUDHIANA

Summary: To keep up with the pace of the current technology, the ministry of external affairs has launched the mPassport Seva mobile app on Windows and Apple iOS platforms after the overwhelming response received on the Android platform.

The app provides passport-related information on the smartphones. It also provides a wide range of services such as status tracking, locating a passport office and other such general information. The application also helps about the various steps involved in a passport-related service and also provides the phone numbers in case of queries or concerns.

The users can also search for a passport seva kendra (PSK) or district passport cell (DPC) in a district, wherein a passport application is to be submitted. This can also be searched on the basis of the city/area PIN code. For certain states and districts, users can search for their local police stations as well. Citizens, residing overseas who apply for a passport service in Indian missions or posts abroad, can also utilize this facility to search address and other relevant information. The "fee calculator" feature of the application also enables users to find out the applicable fee, based on the service and mode of submission.

The application also helps users to track the status of their passport applications through the file number and date of birth. In case the passport has been dispatched, the delivery status can also be tracked.

Given its easy access and hassle-free service, the application has received an overwhelming response from the city residents. Umesh Bhambri, a resident of Civil Lines, said, "Though the online passport facility was a boon for the people, it was not always easy to connect to the passport website due to the logging rush. However, now this application would help us connect easily and know about the status of the passport with just a few clicks."

Nina Mundi, a resident of Gill Chowk, said, "Nowadays, people are crazy about buying the windows and iOS phones besides androids. The passport app on these phones, too, would help many now, as connecting over the phone is easier than connecting to a laptop."

beforeitsnews.com | Wednesday, 06 Nov 2013 Mode: Online Summary: Google’s Android was the first Mobile Operating System (OS) to get the app. Christened as mPassport Seva, the app was under development for some time. Now iOS as well as Windows Phone users will be able to execute majority of procedures needed to complete the Passport Application Process. Expanding the scope of usage of the app is a very important step as majority of Smartphones will be able to utilize the facility. With mPassport, users can track passport applications, locate Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and get general information on how to obtain a passport. Under the app’s service menu, one can also calculate the fee to be paid while applying for the passport. Though such an expansion of scope was logical, MEA chose to emphasize the increasing interest and immense public response, to be the core reason. mPassport Seva is one of the more prominent services under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) that is being executed in public-private-partnership mode with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Incidentally, TCS is responsible for the development of the app, but, the Passport Seva Project, as a whole, is being executed by Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) division of the MEA.

Page 14: Media coverage m passport nov 2013

What began as a mere informative app development endeavor, soon had to be outfitted with payment facilities to ensure applicants were able to complete all major pre-application procedures. However, applicants still need to make a trip to the regional Passport office to submit physical copies of their documents and exhibit originals to establish authenticity. E-Governance Projects, specific and relevant to the common citizens have started to receive widespread attention. Coupled with the phenomenal adoption of smartphones, such applications could soon alter the very dynamics of addressing common issues and settling grievances. What do you think?
