Creative Film Making five top tips: 1. knowing the rules of the genre chosen By knowing your chosen genre you will know the codes and conventions they use and know how you can break the rules to make it original and even better. e.g. horror movies scary music or rock/metal you could change that to calm peaceful music. 2. Name film and characters Giving your film a name and naming characters help build the identity of the film. you shouldn't give an obvious name to the film so that the story is told through the name but something that will intrigue the audience. also naming characters helps you as the writer and director build a personality/identity which then audience will relate to. 3. Personality Using your own experiences and influence in writing scripts and coming up with ideas will help and make the film more believable or relatable to the audience. Also you can give personality to your film not by the text but the Mise en scene (which shows understanding of Mise en scene too) 4. Team Picking an effective team and not just picking friends to work with. choose the best people for crew and good/outstanding actors for the film. audition if needed. 5. Listening you may have an amazing idea for a film and different shot idea and so but try to get other input and ideas and try to incorporate it

Watching and Analysing

Let the right one in

Genre and Sub GenreLet the right one in is a Romantic horror film. It is romantic because there is a relationship between the two main character the vampire girl and the boy, I know this because at the end of the trailer he says will you be my girlfriend but also the love note we see in the boys hand. It is a horror film because we see the girl sucking the mans blood, bodies being found and thrown away and a body being drained of blood.Technical codesEditingat the beginning of the trailer the use of fade was done a lot. it gave the trailer a sort of creepy feel to it as if something was going scary was about to happen. The music at the beginning emphasised the sense of fear because it was very lonely and eerie. Then when you get use to the fades a sudden cut to a body happens which makes you jump. This has been done in order for the viewer to feel on edge and to get the sense of loneliness these characters feel.

Page 2: Media Coursework on Vampires

The use of sudden cut just before something scary happened  (example: 0.47 sec in the trailer) made me jump and wonder what did that whether it was the girl or another character we weren't introduced to yet.The us of dissolve in trailer made me think about the calmness or the fluidity of the boy character after he met the girl because at 0.13 sec he is stabbing a tree which could suggest he is unstable but also cant show he anger or hurt through words so he does it through physical action to then lying comfortably in bed at 0.28 sec.Quick shots to the beat of music made it feel as though it was a heartbeat or running footsteps. This gave it scared/fear feeling. also each shot with the fast paced soundtrack was only 1 second long.SoundThe music in the trailer non-diegetic. The soundtrack starts slow and eerie and then stops when dialogue is said. this is done to show a change and the information we have received but also to really emphasise the dialogue. Also when we first see the girl the music sounds slightly screechy like which could suggest character. the sound of bats symbolises vampires so the viewer knows what type of film this is. the 'whoosh' sound effect used to change the music from slow and eerie to fast paced and scary.the use of sound from the film such as the cat screeching, the women screaming gives us as the audience the sense of fear because they are the type of sounds we don't like to hear. Also the sound of the blood being sucked makes our skin crawl because it makes us uncomfortable to listen to.CameraI notice that in this trailer we begin with a establishing shot then fades to a favouring shot of the main character blur and focus on the bully which could symbolise he has the power/control. in mostof this trailer I saw Medium shots, Long shots - to show character , lots of close up - to show emotion, Extreme long shot - to view the surroundings/to show space. Also I saw Match on action used when the girl jumps onto the man and sucks his blood this is done to show the audience a different perspective. there was also a pan from the boy to the girl at beginning, this is done to create atmosphere and tension.Mise on sceneI notice that in most of the trailer everything is quite quiet, empty and covered in snow. this gave it a lonely and isolated feeling. also the white snow could symbolise not only the season but the purityof the character and then stained with red to show how that purity has been violated. also most of the scenes are done in very dime low light or in very bright high key light.

Representation of vampire

Vampires in let in the right one trailer are represented as blood thirsty creature as we see the girlsucking someone's blood and the body upside down to drain the blood but we also get a feeling of love and care as the girl has feelings for the boy.The girl (Eli) is represented as someone who craves human blood but also feels protective of the boy (Oskar). vampires in this film are shown the way we know them to be as creatures who only come out at night, must be invited in, crave for human blood but also as caring and protective of the person they love.

Narrative

Page 3: Media Coursework on Vampires

Theory of equilibrium (Todorov) is used because at the beginning it is quiet, empty and although the boy (Oskar) is being bullied it is a normal thing. then the girl (Eli) comes along who disturbs the balance with her father as they begin to kill people to have blood to drink, then the trailer doesn't have a equilibrium shown. Binary opposition is used such as the struggle of vampires being in the light and coming out in the dark. strength vs. weakness struggling to stay away from human blood but not being able to as so on.

The Lost Boys

Genre and Sub GenreThe lost boys is a Teen Horror Film. I know it is a Teen film because the characters in the movie are young (which links to vampire) but also the Mise en scene feels teen like because of the lights and the crowd and the rides. also the ride music makes it feel child like. its is a horror film because of the film because of the costume they are wearing most of it is black. also toward the end of the opening sequence the diegetic sound of the ride begins to sound dark because of the choir like voices.also what we see visually too when the character smirks at the end of the scene and also the way he behaves makes us think he's a trouble maker. Technical codesEditingthe opening sequence begins with a 30 sec shot of gliding over water then a tilt to an establishing shot of the fair this was done so we get a sense of locations. then we get a sudden cut to a ride and it tracks forward. this gives us a sort POV feeling of a person watching the ride. then cut and tilt up on one of the characters which make us feel he is the important one because he is shown first but also the camera only did a tilt up on him. the cuts used in this sequence aren't short and quick instead most of them are long or feel that way.SoundThe music at beginning of the opening sequence is non diegetic but also the lyrics used in the song relate to vampire slightly "Thou shall not fall, Thou shall not die, Thou shall not fear, Thou shall not kill" they relate because vampires don't die unless they are staked and they don't fear anything and do on. also the "we are brothers" sets the tone for the film as its said like a whispers but also because it sound like a child it sort of creepy then the laughter made It feel a little unreal because it came out of no where. the main music fades out and the diegetic sound takes over (ambient sound) which is the sound of people shouting and talking and the sound of the rides music which then stops when the boys get told to get off which symbolises an end to something e.g end of life to eternal life. then when the rides music come on again this time non diegetic music of voices and slow drums get adding on and then fade out which makes us think as the audience that the person shown the visual with the music has a secret or is going to cause a lot of trouble throughout the film. Also the sound of the dialogue spoken isn't made louder it is kept at normal level which makes us as the audience feel we are there. CameraIn this opening sequence I noticed that there were 20 shots and then a fade used to end the sequence unlike let the right one in (which is a trailer) the lost boys didn't use that many shots and this made it in my opinion more power it gave the sense of dominance of the main character and the sense of time passing. there were many shot type used but not as many as the let in the right one trailer. we started with an establishing/Extreme long shot then to POV and from then on a lot of medium shot and close ups were used.Mise on scene

Page 4: Media Coursework on Vampires

In the opening sequence I noticed the lighting at the beginning was low key but with one shining lighting illuminating the water this could symbolise darkness is more powerful then light (binary opposition) then when we first see the leader of the lost boys there is a sort of red fog which could symbolise secrets trying to hide but also the colour could symbolise blood and impurity of the character. the costumes: the costume the leader is wearing is mostly black with a leather jacket which usually suggest that he's the bad boy. Also when we are on the ride with we don't really see the background - its blurred and goes around fast which could

Representation of vampire

Vampires in The Lost Boys are represented as trouble making youths, from the opening sequence we do not see them murder or hurt anyone but we do see them behave in mischievous manner - when the leader sees the girl he messes around with her to pull her away from her boyfriend and then the red fog which symbolises mystery and blood by the colour. there are signs shown but nothing is shown.

Narrative

Theory of equilibrium (Todorov) is used because at the beginning everything is normal people are having fun then these troublesome boys come ruin the fun for others then get kicked off the ride. also Character Archetypes (Propp) are suggested such as the leader being the villain and the boys being his sidekick. also Binary Opposition (Levi Strauss) is suggested because everything is light and the boys are wearing dark clothing and also its based at night.
