Roles and responsibilities ofthe Media Specialist
There is currently no policy stated
concerning the Roles andResponsibilities
The roles and responsibilities need to be clearly
described. Our county currently employs aTechnology Specialist and a Media Specialist inevery school. These two positions have very similarresponsibilities within the local school, and it would
be in their best interest if their jobs were welldefined. The following website is a good starting
point for such a policy, but the final policy wouldneed to be completed as collaboration between thetechnology department and the Media Programs.http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/mediahandbook/Sections/a1Admin.htm

School Media ResourceCommittee
IFBC Media Programs07/01/2007IFBD Media Centers01/01/2007
The policy clearly states who should bea part of the committee on the systemlevel and local school level, but itdoesnt go into an explanation as tohow the committee should be selected.
The IFBD policy explains theresponsibilities of the MediaCommittee in the Local School.
The Policy Handbook should reflect the process bywhich a committee is chosen. Additionally, theduration in which the committee should serve. Afresh committee each year will help to keep the ideasnew as well.http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/mediahandbook/Sections/

This policy is very general and doesnot give explanation as to HOW the
process should take place.
A more in depth policy needs to be written. MediaSpecialists need to have more of a format to follow
so that each library is consistent in how they weedtheir out of date or overly used materials and
equipment. The following sites give guidelines to follow whenweeding the materials and equipment in the mediacenter.http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/mediahandbook/Sections/c1CollectServ.htmThis is a wonderful pamphlet that can guide MediaSpecialists in the processhttp://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/lb/documents/weedingbrochure.pdfHere is a Power Point that could be shown to Media

Patron ResponsibilityIFBC Media Programs07/01/2007
The current policy is very vague. Itstates that appropriate charges may
be made for lost or damaged books.
The current policy needs to be more specific so thatall media centers in the county are consistent in the
process of holding patrons responsible forborrowing. The Hillsborough Media Handbook does anexcellent job of explaining why there is a need tocharge for lost or damaged textbooks as well as aguide for pricing. Currently, the Forsyth CountyPolicy doesnt provide a guide by which MediaSpecialists should figure the cost of an item.

Scheduling State IFBD06/15/1998
Forsyth County does not restate thispolicy in their Media Program policyas listed on the epolicy website.
A policy regarding flexible scheduling should beclearly defined within the policy handbook. This isan area where many teachers do not have anunderstanding, and feel their media specialist is notrunning the media center appropriately. Thehandbook should reflect the States Media Programsrules as stated in 160-4-4-.01.The AASL has provided a very thorough article that
gives further rationale for flexible scheduling. Itwould be beneficial to link this article to the policy
so that teachers can have further understanding.

Technology
Internet Acceptable Use IFBG Board Policy
8/31/2001
The Current technology policies are
very strong in comparison to the othermedia policies. All aspects oftechnology are addressed. The InternetPolicy is very detailed in its descriptionfor administrators, teachers, andstudents. The policy makes referenceseveral times to the Children's InternetProtection Act of 2000, and provides a
link for further reading.
Though it is a thorough policy, a review and update
would be warranted. The county has increased theamount of technology within the county within thepast 4 years. Every classroom has an ACTIV boardand a scanner. Therefore, it is necessary to updatethe policy to reflect the acceptable use of these tools.

Confidentiality of student
records
No board policy currently in place thatis connected to Library Records.
The policies handbook should be revised to showthat student records within the library system should
be confidential. The following article articulates whythere is a need for such confidentiality.http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/aaslproftools/

Copyright Policies IFBC Media Programs
07/01/2007IFBD Media Programs
The county policy is very vague. It
doesn't outline a specific policy or givea location to where teachers, parents, orstudents can access information oncopyright questions. It states that themedia specialist is in charge ofkeeping the faculty abreast of thecurrent copyright laws.
The policy needs to be more specific towards all the
different types of copyright issues. Additionally, itneeds to define what fair use is and how it appliesspecifically to teachers ans students within theschool. The following are several sources that could behelpful for teachers to understand the policies. Itwould be beneficial for teachers to have access tosuch resources to help them make informeddecisions.
