Charts and analysis for my audience research results

I have create a question to find out what people want to see in a music video, in particular, a country music video. The next few slides show the results from the survey and how these results will influence my music video.

1. which 3 things do you think are essential in making a good music video?

The feedback I received for this question mostly suggested that the most important aspect of a music video is its uniqueness and its narrative. This feedback is helping me decide how much of my music video will be narrative and how much will be artist performance, as it seems as though the audience would mostly like to see a strong narrative running through the video.

2. Do you like to find something out about the artist through his or her music video? E.g. having the artist's children in the video

or having part of the video set in a location close to the artist heart.

The feedback was split on whether they thought you should find something out about the artist through his or her video. Therefore, I am going to have a bit of the artists branding or locations or customs that connote the artist lifestyle in the video but not make it to personal, as I feel this is what the audience would like to see in the music video.

3. When watching a music video, what aspect of the video to you find the most interesting?

The chart shows that the respondents thought that the most important aspects of a music video was the costumes and the lighting. This feedback has encouraged me to focus my attention on these two aspects. As my song fits into the genre of country music, I am going to have a look at different country music artists to get a better idea about what kind of lighting they use, e.g. How much of the lighting is artificial, and how they connote their style of music through their costumes.

4. Do you think that a music video that has a very relaxed style to it will still catch your attention?

Similarly to question two, the feedback I received was split 50/50. This has influenced the ideas I have come up with since I received the feedback, because I feel that the audience would like to see a music video that has elements of a calm, relaxing music video and elements of an upbeat, eye catching music video.

5. What kind of music video do you prefer?

PURPLE = A balance of both

ORANGE = Mostly narrative

Although I also gave an answer option for ‘Mostly artist performance’ none of my respondents preferred that option and it is like that most of the respondents felt that there should be a balance between the artist performing and narrative running through the video.

6. Do you think that an artist needs to be in his or her music video, or can you have a video that is

purely a story told through actors?

Many of the respondents thought that an artist did not need to be in his/her music. Although this feedback surprised me, I shall take it into account and use it to help make my music video original, as I have not seen many music videos which are purely narrative.

7. What do you think a country music star should look like?

AQ country music star can look like anything these days. For a British artist a folky look, like that of Mumford and sons may be more appropriate than a full on cowboy 'boots and stetson' look

Not like all the other singers, an indie style but something to make them stand out

cowboy hat, checkered shirt, handsome, stubble

A cowboy or Dolly Parton

A hippy?

Sitting on a stall with a guitar in there hands. singing there heart out

From the result, I think the audience would like to see a contemporary country music star instead of a stereotypical looking one. I will take on board the feedback about trying to merge folk, indie and country styles together, so I can create a look that will suit a bigger audience range and still suit the artist style of music.

The feedback I received from this question also helped me to decide what locations to set the video in. As the some of the feedback suggests having the artist sitting on a stool, I will incorporate this into the ideas I had for the locations of the video. For example, I was going to have the artist perform in a rustic pub location and so will now have him in this location sitting on a stool with a guitar.

8. Do you think it is possible to use a city location in a music video that's song has a country music feel to

it?

As most of the respondents felt that using a city location in a country music genre of song was ok, I will do so. As this will help add to the contemporary style that the feedback, from question eight, suggested would look best for a new country music star, following in foot steps of, for example, Mumford and Sons.

9. What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says "country music"?

I mostly received feedback from this question that made me think that my music video should be quite relaxed and perhaps even nostalgic in a way. Generalising the feedback, it seems that some people would want to see a video that is stereotypical to the country music style, whilst some would like to see more of a modern video. Therefore, I will try to merge old and new together to make a video that suits everyone's taste.

Generalising the feedback, it would seem that most people watch somewhere between 1-6 music videos each week. I will use the feedback I received from my research to make sure my video is one of those videos.

10. In a week, how many music videos do you watch?
