The start to the 2018-2019 school year has been an exciting and busy time here at Central Medford High School’s Outdoor Adventure Lead-ership (OAL) program. The OAL student leadership team hit the ground running this year, by initi-ating the school-wide New Stu-dent Integration Program. OAL Student Leaders Josh Allison, Lo-gan Koons, and Erica Steeves have spent hours mapping out how best to welcome and assimilate Cen-tral’s new family members. Wel-come to CMHS, new students!

Mrs. McAllister and Mr. Carlson are offering several brand-new classes this year: Wilderness Culi-nary Skills (offered terms 1 and 6), and Culinary Science (offered terms 2-5). Wilderness Culinary Skills has been a huge success so far, with OAL leadership students Natashia Diehl, Jonathan Parry (JP), and Tae'shanay Wortman (Tae Tae) stepping up their teach-ing skills by teaching the class about backcountry stove use, backcountry water filtration sys-tems, and much more!

Also new, this year are two new Friday elective classes: Women in the Outdoors and Men in the Out-doors, taught by Mrs. McAllister and Mr. Carlson, respectively. If interested, please come talk to Mrs. McAllister (room 165) or Mr. Carlson (room 102)!

Best,

Mr. Carlson and Mrs. McAllister

Mrs. Ulrey, Mr. McDermott and Mr. Tye’s classes came together to volunteer with Toys for Tots. They sorted donated toys by gender, age group, stocking stuffers, arts, crafts, games, books and stuffed animals. On the second day, they worked directly with fami-lies that stood in line for up to three hours by assisting them while they shopped for their children.

December Activities:

CMHS have been visiting seniors living at the Northridge Center for Assisted Living. Students have been playing games like BUNCO on Mondays and Horse Races on Thursdays. They helped residents with the making of ornaments and decorating the “HALLS” of the center for Christmas. Most especially, they lis-

tened to stories and made new friends.

In Ms. Headings class, Our student Sarah Loranger led approximately

25 students in completing ten fleece tied blankets that were delivered to the men’s shelter in Medford.

Mrs. McAllister and Mr. Carlson’s class prepared a lasagna dinner that they then delivered and served in partnership with the Ashland Peace Commission to people experiencing homelessness in Ashland.

This project will continue throughout the year!

Led by CMHS principal, Amy Herbst, and in partnership with Together-WeRise.org and FlowFactoryNW.com, we were able to purchase 45

duffle bags that students decorated and filled with teddy bears, blan-kets, coloring books, crayons and toothbrushes. Students then deliv-

ered them to Department of Human Services so that social workers can provide them for kids to gather their belongings (instead of plastic gar-

bage bags) when they are in unsafe homes and need to be removed.
