This feast of the Baptism of the Lord presents us with the opportunity reflect on the importance of our own baptism. It is the sacrament we receive only once but the graces of the sacrament continue to unfold throughout our lives. Spend some time in prayer with the reading from Isaiah in today’s Mass. As you read the passage, hear God speaking these words directly to you. Draw on the grace of your baptism to make these words live in your heart.

A message from Bishop Mark - Catholic Schools Week begins January 26th! This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” For Catholics learning is not simply informational but formational. Catholic education invites young people to view the world and all its wonders through a vision of faith: to learn why God made the world, us and for what purpose each one has been put on this earth. Our Catholic schools can freely speak of science in connection to our faith which is increasingly important in our world that demands separation of the two. The Catholic vision for humanity fosters lasting values that build personhood and character. We are grateful to all our parishes for contributing to making this a viable opportunity here in the North Region. In the North Region, we have 18 elementary schools, 3 middle & high schools combined, and 3 high schools. All of these schools enhance opportunities for our youngest members and are a tremendous place of faith and learning that I hope all our parishes support. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2020 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” During the week schools typically celebrate with Masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. Support our schools! Encourage enrollment in our Catholic Schools in the North Region!

FROM THE INSIDE FLAP: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” So begins the psalm that, for millennia, has been a source of comfort in grief and of courage in fear. Now Harold Kushner discovers what it has to teach us about living our day-to-day lives. Each chapter discusses one line of the psalm in the context of both the time when it was written and the present day, and illuminates the life lessons contained within it. For example, Kushner shows us that the phrase “My cup runneth over” is a declaration of our gratitude for what life has given us and a rejection of the envy we may feel for what others have. And he draws on the ideas and thoughts of various spiritual figures from G. K. Chesterton to Martin Buber to Paul Tillich to further expand our understanding of this great psalm and help us benefit from its everyday spiritual wisdom.

Are you an adult who has not yet been baptized and would like to explore the possibility of being baptized? Are you an adult who was baptized in a non-Catholic Christian community and would be interested in entering into full communion with the Catholic Church? Are you an adult who was baptized in the Catholic Church as a child, never received further faith formation, and would like to pursue reception of the sacraments beyond baptism? Are you an adult who did not complete your Religious Education and would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation?
