With history dating back to 1885, Medalta boasts a state-of-the-art studio that attracts talented artists from all over the world. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Medalta to see just what this National Historic Site has to offer.

There are plenty of classes and workshops for people of all ages. There are several children’s programs which make Medalta an incredibly family friendly place to spend an afternoon. If you and your family are looking for ways to expand the art and culture opportunities in your life there is no better place to start than right here. There are many interesting programs available in the museum for the remainder of the year and of course the artists in residence program and their exciting creations for sale and display are

always a highlight of a trip to Medalta. This year along with an outstanding line up of events planned in celebration of Alberta Culture Days in September, there’s the always popular Black & White Gala in October and the official opening of the Brick & Tile Plant site which kicks off later this summer. The former IXL Brick Plant will offer facility tours and a soft‐mud brick interpretive experience. It will be an exciting few months throughout the historic site and its facilities and I hope you take time to explore all the great events and features available to our visitors.

If you want to see the character of a community, introduce a little adversity. In late June, for the second time in four years, Medicine Hat was affected by flooding. Medalta, Hycroft China and the Medicine Hat Brick & Tile Plant are all part of the River Flats neighbourhood, which was the hardest hit area in the city. Medalta and the Brick & Tile Plant both flooded, while Hycroft China was spared. Watching our community come together during this time has been nothing short of amazing. The level of support from the community has been tremendous, not just for us in the Historic Clay District, but for everyone affected by the flood. Every call for volunteers from the City of Medicine Hat was met with overwhelming response. Donations, fundraisers and offers to help popped up everywhere - even before the floodwaters subsided. Such a strong show of support for others in our community makes

us realize just how incredibly proud we are to be a part of Medicine Hat. Everyone is helping each other and getting our great community back on track. With lots of help from volunteers, we worked hard to re-open Medalta. We are fortunate that most of our programming was unaffected. This program guide reflects that. We feel fortunate to have escaped the worst and our thoughts are with all those in our community who weren’t as fortunate. As always, thank you for your support. We look forward to contributing to Medicine Hat as we rebuild and grow together.

ACE Programming (Artistic, Community, Education)

Our Artistic, Community and Education programs are what make Medalta relevant. The facility – one of the most beautiful man-made settings in Alberta – is a stunning piece of architecture with a perfect mix of heritage and contemporary elements. But without programming designed to inspire creativity & experimentation, celebrate & interpret our heritage or educate youth in an engaging way, Medalta would not be as successful.

These programs are what give life to this facility, making it even more dynamic. Over the past few years, our focus on programming has increased dramatically, thanks in large part to the tremendous community support we have received.

Artistic Artists are experimenters, looking at new ways of using existing technologies or developing new technologies to solve their own technical problems. Artists today are not primarily focused on the final product. For every piece in an art gallery, there are 100 piled in the corners of studios. It is about the process; the experiments which yield new information.

Artist residencies are the creative equivalent to scientific laboratories – ideas come together and are explored to their natural end. Sometimes these ideas stay in the studio, awaiting further exploration. In other times – exciting times – an idea produces something extraordinary. When that happens, change happens. The goal is to push new ideas to their absolute limit in order to see further into the future. By pushing further than before, artists at Medalta are able to help others see the future. By experimenting and sharing, progress can (and will) happen in positive, unexpected ways.

That is the relevance of an artists’ work. To endlessly experiment, share ideas, build on ideas, combine ideas and move this world forward. Medalta’s artist residency program seeks to interpret our past and our present for the future. This program respects the process of making and understands that process based learning produces new knowledge that expands the definition of ‘possible.’

CommunityThe belief at Medalta is that for a museum and contemporary arts facility to reach its full potential, it needs to actively engage the community. That doesn’t happen simply by opening the doors – it happens by offering a wide range of relevant opportunities for people to pursue their creative desires and engage with their own heritage in meaningful ways.

Our workshops reintroduce participants to traditional uses for our ware, including pickling, baked beans and making wood-fired bread. Our museum inspires nostalgia through the stories related to each piece of pottery while interpreting the early industrial processes used to create thousands of pieces.

Our contemporary ceramic artists engage the public through exhibiting in the beautiful and spacious Yuill Family Gallery and by teaching community art classes for people ages eight to eighty. These artists offer endless inspiration as they bring ideas from around the world to Medicine Hat.

Our mandate is to bring culture to as many people as possible in as meaningful a way as we can. Our community programming achieves that.

EducationEducation over the years has made a fundamental change. Long gone are the methods of lecturing and note-taking. Today, engagement and hands-on experimentation are the keys. And Medalta is at the forefront of that change. Medalta’s education programs are based on the Alberta Education Curriculum which means that a field trip to Medalta is not just fun – it’s educational too! Teachers and parents appreciate the fact that core education objectives are being met and students appreciate the opportunity to get their hands dirty through working with clay!

Initially, Medalta’s education programs primarily featured half-day field trips. Although those are still in operation and very popular, additional community support from Short Grass Ranches Ltd and Cancarb Ltd have allowed us to offer a new and very exciting education opportunity.

Medalta’s Open Minds project opens the door to week-long cultural immersion at Medalta. Through this project, students have the opportunity to turn Medalta into their classroom for an entire week! Each of their subjects will be tailored to fit their new surroundings. They will take hikes, explore the museum, work in our pottery studio and maybe even use our wood-fired pizza oven!

It is a rich, rewarding experience for everyone and nearly every classroom comes back year after year.

METHANEX BLACK & WHITE GALA 2013The Black & White Gala is a fundraiser for Medalta’s Artistic, Community & Education programming, giving us the opportunity to continue offering exceptional artistic and cultural programming to thousands of visitors annually in one of Alberta’s most unique spaces – the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site.

The Black & White Gala at Medalta has quickly become one of Medicine Hat’s most prestigious events. This black-tie gourmet dinner and wine-pairing event showcases artwork from some of the finest artists with whom Medalta is fortunate enough to be associated with. You can bid on in our Live or Silent Auction. It is an evening which is talked about long after it’s over by those who were there.

Community support is what makes this evening successful. In 2013, we received a two-year commitment from Methanex to be the Title Sponsor of this event and a number of 2012 sponsors have already renewed their commitment for 2013.

MEDICINE HAT BRICK & TILE PLANTFor the second time in four years, the Medicine Hat Brick & Tile plant flooded. However, the berms were not breached. The water entered that site through backed-up storm drains. Although these drains were plugged by staff in anticipation of the flood, unfortunately those plugs did not hold.

The issues we are dealing with at the Brick & Tile plant are surely of little significance compared to the thousands of people in Medicine Hat – and across most of Southern Alberta – who were also affected by the flood.

The initial plans for the Brick & Tile Plant were to open it for tours this summer. A great deal of work has gone into making that happen, including cleaning the site, building walkways and even a pedal car which would take visitors through one of the tunnel kilns.

Unfortunately the flood waters have forced us to do another extensive cleaning before you can enjoy the site. Our plans now are to open the site to tours in the summer of 2014 and we will be working until then to make that happen. As Alberta’s oldest continually operating industrial site (from the 1880’s until 2010), it is an amazing site which highlights nearly every era of industrialization in Alberta, showing evidence of technological and industrial growth – from a simple manually-operated soft-mud brick yard to advanced robotics.

FLOODING IN THE RIVER FLATS NEIGHBOURHOOD Surrounded by two beautiful parks (Lions & Strathcona), home to some of the city’s most iconic architecture (Elm Street, St. Louis & CAPE Schools) and a hub of culture and heritage with the Historic Clay District, the River Flats is one of Medicine Hat’s most beautiful, established and diverse neighbourhoods.

And when the South Saskatchewan River rose in late June, this neighbourhood was the hardest-hit.

Medalta and the Historic Clay District are extremely proud to be a part of this neighbourhood. As much as we are preserving the stories of industrialization in Alberta, we are preserving the story of this neighbourhood and the people who live in it.

Medalta and the Brick & Tile Plant received some flooding. However, due to our own flood preparedness over the past eighteen years (including the construction of permanent berms), we were able to mitigate much of the impact. We were closed temporarily to clean and get back on track but Medalta is again open and fully operational.

Medicine Hat is a strong, helpful community. We have seen an incredible response, with many people calling, emailing or tweeting to ask how we’re doing and to offer assistance. We have seen a similar response towards others affected.

As we move forward, it will be this positive, cooperative spirit that will see us through. A lot of time and effort will go into rebuilding the River Flats neighbourhood and it will emerge even stronger than before.

The Animal Forum A Ceramic Art Exhibition Mary Stankevicius 2012-13 Medalta Resident Artist (Full-year)

Following her graduation from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (NSCAD) in 2012, Mary moved to Medicine Hat to expand her practice by participating in Medalta’s international residency program for ceramic artists.

Her lifelike large scale coil-built animal sculptures are completely hand-built and do an excellent job of capturing the personality of each animal, whether it is a gorilla, elephant, goat or anything else. She brings the clay to life through these forms, even showing emotion through the animal’s eyes.

This exhibition is the culmination of a year’s work at Medalta and will be on display to the public this summer.

Ben is a Montana-based ceramic artist who received his degree in ceramics from the University of Montana. He has a love of process - especially atmospheric firing. Ben’s work is inspired by science fiction literature.

First Annual Medalta International Cup Show

Medalta’s first annual International Cup Show is a showcase of some of the finest and most interesting work created by artists from around the world, including Canada, the United States, Tasmania, Singapore and England.

Nearly 200 artists submitted over 500 entries, which have been juried by Canadian ceramic artist and Musing about Mud blogger, Carole Epp. Carole is a graduate of the Australian National University and is well-known in international ceramic art circles for her community-building efforts.

This is an excellent opportunity to see a wide cross-section of artistic styles and interpretations of the cup from around the world, or add to your cupboard as all cups are available to purchase.

Celebrating African Grandmothers, Heroes of the Continent.

40 fabulous pieces of art have been selected & are being exhibited across Canada to raise awareness of the heroic grandmothers of Africa and raise funds in support of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in March 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to care for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. The Campaign aims to raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize support in Canada for Africa’s grandmothers. The Campaign has since evolved into a dynamic and responsive national movement, and currently boasts more than 240 grandmothers groups across the country.

This traveling exhibition is hosted in Medicine Hat by the Hat Grannies for Africa, at Medalta.

Kids’ Summer Clay Camps: Clay Magic

Ages 8-11 years old Session A: July 8 – 12 Session B: August 12 – 16

This is a class where children learn and practice many hand-building techniques in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

Kids’ Summer Clay Camps: Teen Pottery Wheel

Age 12 – 17 Session A: July 8 – 12 Session B: August 12 – 16 1:00pm – 4:00pm $110 + gst (each session) Medalta (Shaw Centre)

Uncover the mysteries of the potter’s wheel in this fun week of hands-on “throwing”. Create pots or flatware under the guidance of an experienced instructor while learning new skills and making new friends.

The Medicine Hat Photography Club is an active collection of many of Medicine Hat’s most energetic photographers. Each year the club is given a theme in which to photograph with their interpretations put on display on Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery walls.

This is the sixth consecutive year for this exhibition at Medalta, which always draws an energetic crowd.

Pickling Workshops

Session A: Thursday, September 5 4:00pm – 7:00pm

Session B: Saturday, September 7 10:00am – 2:00pm

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make delicious pickles from scratch with Joanne Smith of the Big Cook Cookbook. All ingredients will be sourced locally and will be stored in Medicine Hat-made Medalta crocks, adding an extra level to the term “locally made.”

Joanne Smith is one of the authors of the bestselling Big Cook cookbook. And she writes a column for the Medicine Hat News. She is a Registered Dietician and her belief that knowledge can provide the means to attain a healthy lifestyle has lead to an active public-speaking schedule.

Artisanal Bread and the Wood-fired Oven

Session A: Saturday, September 1410:00am – 4:00pm

Session B: Saturday, September 2110:00am – 4:00pm


Bread is a simple process. Mix flour with water, add a leavening agent (like yeast) and some salt; then knead, rest, form and bake. Simple and yet open to a myriad of interpretations. Artisanal breads, made with yeasted pre-ferments, then baked in a wood-fired oven, provide a richer, more complex crumb and crust. They also provide a satisfaction of feeding both the heart and the home.

Red-Seal Chef and Artisanal Baker, Elizabeth M., has been enlisted to provide an introduction to the ease of making the perfect loaf.

In this workshop, participants will spend half a day learning how to make a delicious, healthy Bean recipe from scratch using Medalta’s Bean Pots. In this relaxed, engaging atmosphere lead by Joanne Smith, you will learn traditional cooking techniques as well as the modern science and nutritional value of a delicious bean dish.

For those with some experience working with clay, this is an excellent opportunity to refine your craft. Work with experienced artists participating in the Medalta International Artist in Residence Program and experiment with new ideas that you can incorporate into your own practice.



Alberta Culture Days began in 2008 as Alberta Arts Day, a one-day event to recognize the value of Alberta’s arts and cultural communities. Since then, it has expanded into a vibrant, three-day, provincewide celebration that has helped inspire the creation of Culture Days - a pan-Canadian movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. www.culture.alberta.ca/culturedays/

Medalta has been a part of every Culture Days weekend, beginning with a visit from then-Culture Minister Lindsay Blackett during a photography exhibition. Since then, Culture Days at Medalta has grown into a multi-day event and two-time Host Celebration Site that now features live music, dancing, raku-firing pottery, bouncy castles, face painting and home-made wood-fired pizza.

It’s a great way to spend time with family and engage with Medicine Hat’s exciting culture. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Shaw Centre Open Houses are some of our most interesting and understated evenings at Medalta. Usually scheduled during the summer months when we host the most resident artists, these free public events give visitors a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at our visiting artists’ private art studios. By meeting the artists and seeing works of art in different stages of completion, the goal is to reduce the barrier between art and the general public. Everyone is encouraged to attend these evenings.
