The capstone project is the culmination of a students’ Honors experience. These students, working with a faculty advisor and faculty readers, have earned an Honors minor for work that has resulted in a project reflecting substantial scholarship and demonstrating outstanding research, or a creative work that shows imagination, originality, and craftsmanship.

HONORS CAPSTONE PROJECT

INDEPENDENT SCHOLARS

Independent Scholars is a self-designed major open to students who are Honors-eligible. Each student devises a curriculum, plans research and field study, and conducts independent research in consultation with the Independent Scholars faculty and a faculty mentor from one of JMU’s academic departments. The major is aimed at students who are strongly self-motivated and research-oriented, and who cannot address their interests sufficiently within any of the existing majors or minors at JMU.

RACHEL BARBOREK

Each year JMU recognizes one student who meets the criteria for the class valedictorion with the highest grade point average, 100 or more hours of coursework at James Madison University, and an average of 14 hours earned each regular semester of attendance. The Honors College is proud to announce that Morgan Kiley Cornwell is the JMU Valedictorian for the Class of 2019. Morgan will graduate with a Communication Sciences and Disorders degree and an Honors Interdisciplinary Minor. She will begin graduate school at JMU in the fall and pursue a Master’s in Speech Pathology.

VALEDICTORIAN

All graduating Honors students completed an Honors capstone project over the course of their final three semesters. These students, working with a committee of faculty members, undertook a research project demonstrating original scholarship, or a creative work showing imagination and craftsmanship. Two students garnered recognition for the high quality of their work: Rachel Barborek (Biology) and Rhys Frazier (English) received Best Thesis Awards from Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, respectively.

Commencement NotesPHOTOGRAPHY Each graduate will have photos taken by JMU’s official photographers, Grad Images, at their respective college ceremonies. Shortly after the commencement ceremonies, graduates will be emailed the photography website link, which will include the proofs and information about ordering prints. Graduates and guests may take photographs during the ceremonies from their seats but are prohibited from taking photos in the aisles or blocking the sight lines of other guests for long periods of time.

FLOWER SALES Commencement Flowers will be offering floral arrangements for purchase near every college ceremony on Friday and Saturday.

WEBCAST The Graduate School and University Ceremonies will be broadcast live online at www.jmu.edu. The link will also be available for viewing several weeks after commencement.

DIPLOMAS Diplomas are not distributed at the college graduation ceremonies. Diplomas are mailed by the Office of the Registrar approximately eight weeks after graduates complete their final class and fulfill all program and financial requirements. For questions regarding diplomas, please email the Office of the Registrar at [email protected] or call 540.568.6281.

The commencement program is a roster of candidates, not an official list of graduates . Appropriate degrees and honors will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete all requirements by established deadlines . The posting of the earned degree on the official university transcript is the institution’s affirmation of possession of the degree . Honors indicated in the program are based on

grades for semesters completed prior to the last semester . Actual honors for all completed work will be subsequently calculated and appear on the official transcript and diploma, if earned . While every effort is made to ensure that this Commencement Program is accurate and up to date, some information may have

changed between the printing date and the actual ceremony .
