    Mechanical properties of

    liquids

    Viscosity and its measurement

  • Why viscosity?

    • The viscosity of the saliva, sweat, bile, synovial

    fluid...

    • Blood viscosity is a direct indicator of the ability

of blood to flow through the vessel

    • The increased blood viscosity is one of the

parameters that is associated with other risk

factors for cardiovascular diseases (high blood

pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, ...) *

    • Blood viscosity is also influenced by lifestyle

    (lack of exercise, dehydration...)

  • Properties of liquid

    Real fluids:

    • Molecular structure

    • Internal liquid friction

    • Slightly compressible

    • Capillary

    phenomenon

    Ideal fluids:

    • Molecular structure is

    neglected

    • It is continuum (flow is

    smooth, no turbulence)

    • Absent internal friction

    • incompressibility

  • Real fluid flow

  • Methods for viscosity measuring

    • Rotatory viscometers -

    viscosity is determined

    by the resistance which

    fluid put to the rotary

    movement of

    appropriately selected

    bodies.

  • • Vibrating viscometers use

    for determining viscosity

    damping capacity of fluid

    as a consequence its

    viscosity

  • • Falling-ball viscometer

    – measurement is

    based on the

    measuring of the speed

    of the ball which

    dimension is known

    • Measurement of

    Newtonian liquidsStoke’s falling-ball viscometer

    • Stoke’s law (blood sedimentation)

    F = 6 η π r v F – frictional force, η – dynamic viscosity of medium, π = 3,14, r –

radius of the particle, v –particle´s velocity

  • • Capilar tube viscometer –

    based on measuring the

    time t during which a

    constant volume of liquid V

    flows through a capillary at

    constant pressure and

    temperature

Blood viscosity values were significantly higher in men than in women at

each of the shear rates evaluated. Normalized blood viscosity is blood

viscosity at haematocrit 45%. Plasma viscosity and serum viscosity is

    independent on gender.
