Mechanical FunctionsTechnical systems are made up of different components.

Each component in a system plays an important role in the overall functioning of the system.

The role played by a component in a technical system is called a mechanical function.

Vocabulary wordsBasic Mechanical Function: the role played by a component or a group of components in the function or assembly of a technical object.Components: the parts or fluids in a technological object that have a mechanical function.Guiding: the basic mechanical function of any component that controls the motion of one or several moving parts.Guide: a component that has the basic mechanical function of guiding.Link: connect two or more parts of a technical object.Linking: the basic mechanical function provided by any component that links an objects parts.Linking component: one that has the basic mechanical function of linking.Basic Mechanical FunctionsThe 2 types of basic mechanical functions we will be looking at are:LinksGuiding controlA link connects, fastens, or puts together two or more components of a technical object.

Ex: nail, screw, nut, bolt, glue

1) LinksCharacteristics of LinksA link always has 4 characteristics.

Direct or indirect

Rigid or flexible

Removable or non-removable

Complete or Partial1DIRECTINDIRECTTwo parts can hold together without a linking component. Two parts must hold together WITH a linking component.

112RIGIDFLEXIBLEThe surfaces of linked parts or linking components are rigid.

The surfaces of linked parts or linking components can be deformed.

123REMOVABLENON-REMOVABLELinked parts can be separated with no resulting damage.Separating the linked parts will cause damage.

134COMPLETEPARTIALNo movement between linked parts. At least one part is capable of motion with respect to the other.

2) Guiding ControlGuidance is the function of a part that directs another part along a specific path.

Guidance dictates whether the motion is either rotational or translational.

ROTATIONALEnsures the rotational motion of a moving partUsually a cylindrical partTRANSLATIONALEnsures the straight motion of a moving part Usually a groove or a slideRotational or translational guide?
