A TOWERING SUCCESS IN THE WORLD’S MEETING PLACE

Finding a location that Wikimedia supporters would like to and can easily visit was imperative. Hong Kong, with its visa-free access for 170 nationalities and wealth of international flight connections, proved to be an ideal choice.

WELCOMING DESTINATION

JIMMY WALESFounder, Wikimedia

“By holding the conference in Hong Kong, people were excited to come. And I don’t think they’ve been disappointed. It’s an amazing city.”

ANDREW LIHEvent Consultant, Wikimedia

“Something that’s really great about Hong Kong is having so many mobile providers – you have competition, prices are reasonable, bandwidth is high, and that’s not always been the case in other cities where we’ve had Wikimedia conferences.”

Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and tolerance for free speech offered Wikimedia a destination that was reflective of its core goal to disseminate knowledge and information.

DISCUSSION HAVEN

With websites like Wikipedia requiring constant updating, connectivity was a key requirement. Hong Kong’s world leading internet speed and value for bandwidth proved to be compelling factor.
