RATHCAIRN’S COMMUNITY Centre is to get a new heating system after a €3,225 government windfall. The funding for the Meath Gaeltacht area was approved by Minister of State for the Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley TD in recent weeks.

Announcing the grant, Minister of State McGinley said that he was very happy to provide this grant to the community centre and that he was sure that the people of Ráth Chairn and those who attend the community centre would benefit from the Department’s investment.

28 primary and secondary schools in Co. Meath spend a staggering €1.15 million annually on rental fees for pre-fabricated accommodation according to Sinn Féin spokesperson in Meath East, Darren O’Rourke. The figures, which were released in response to Parliamentary Questions prompted by Mr. O’Rourke also indicate that four schools have each paid out in excess of €500,000 in total over the course of the last nine years.

Commenting on the figures O’Rourke said; “These figures are quite shocking and reflect the reality that there has been a consistent and chronic lack of funding for schools infrastructure over the past decade and more. The growth in population in Co. Meath over that period has not been matched with appropriate infrastructure and services. An annual bill in excess of €1m for what is essentially temporary accomodation is wasted money especially considering a number of schools have been renting prefabs for more than a decade.

“At this time of record unemployment levels Sinn Féin has called on the Government to invest in labour-intensive public infrastructure projects to boost employment in construction and ancillary sectors and to put in place the infrastructure required to sustain our economy in the medium to

long term. This should include an extensive school building programme to bring about an end to the use of prefab accommodation for our children. “Last year Sinn Féin launched a four-year plan to invest €13 billion in job creation to stimulate economic growth. Our jobs plan detailed major investment in essential infrastructure including the building of an additional 100 schools at a cost of €300 million and the refurbishment of 75 more at a cost of €50 million. This is on top of current capital commitments.

“In opposition sitting government TDs for Meath called for this situation to be addressed. They now have a responsibility to deliver.”

THE GOVErNmENT’S grant for adapting Meath homes for the elderly or those with a disability has been cut by almost half this year. The cut-backs have been described by local Cllr Joe Reilly as “one of the meanest and sneakiest cuts of all.” Cllr Reilly stated that the funding to Meath Co. Council has been slashed by 45pc from €1,072m in 2012 to €487,123 this year.

“Meath Co. Council will have to provide €97,424 of its own resources in order to receive the allocation,” he said. Nationally the budget for such grants has been decreased from €54m to €35m. €300,000 of the council’s allocation has been committed to works started last year for those who were approved grants. These cover people who are terminally ill or works on a relative’s home which would allow a loved one home from hospital. “This means there is only about €187,000 left in this year’s budget for the needs of the elderly, infirm and those who are terminally ill.”

He continued: “These grants enabled home refurbishments which allowed people to do simple things such as bathe, move around their homes or even just access the upstairs of their homes. “Heaping hardship upon hardship on those who can least afford it is not an economic policy - it is just attacking those least able to fight back.”

ES ScHOOl of Music opened its doors for business in Navan on Saturday, February 2nd. Offering lessons in drums, regular & classical guitar, bass, piano, keyboard, vocals, mandolin and banjo. All lessons are €60 per month.

What is ‘a course’ of acupuncture?Happily, conditions of recent onset (several weeks), such as neck and shoulder stiffness and pain,

and even some conditions that have been around for months, respond really well in five-to-ten sessions, or even less. Chronic diseases (present for several months or years) require long-term treatment to bring them under control, and just as western medicine is ineffective unless the prescribed dose is taken, if you don’t get acupuncture frequently enough, or for long enough, it is unlikely to yield the desired results.

Examples of chronic conditions include perennial rhinitis, asthma, oedema, ME, and trigeminal neuralgia. A course of acupuncture for conditions such as these is about 10-12 sessions and this will yield good results, although there will be noticeable improvement within 3-4 treatments.

What if there is more than one problem?Another factor that determines the number of treatments you need is your starting point. If you are otherwise healthy and have only one complaint then treatment is relatively straightforward, but when there are several things going on, which may or may not be related to each other, or when you are feeling run down as well, it’s going to take a little longer to see results. In these circumstances you might need some preliminary work on your energy and general well-being before work on the more obvious problems can begin.

Is that all there is to it?Acupuncture can work wonders on its own, but improving one’s diet and lifestyle will contribute significantly to the overall outcome. Obviously, simple changes such as cutting down tea and coffee and taking more regular exercise will help problems such as insomnia. Sometimes, however, it might be necessary to make more significant changes; reducing dairy, wheat or sugar can be critical to managing conditions such as sinusitis, cystitis, colitis and IBS.

Long term and wider benefitsFor many people, reducing medication is one of the benefits of acupuncture. For example, after several treatments most chronic back pain patients are able to cut out or reduce their pain killers, and enjoy active pursuits. And even if some pain returns after several months, it usually takes just a couple of treatments to get them back to normal. Another side benefit of acupuncture is that sleep, energy and general well-being improve significantly, even though these may not have been part of the original complaint.

A METHADONE clinic will be relocated to Duleek from Drogheda next week. The HSE has confirmed that the decision was taken by GPs who say they can no longer provide the clinic from the current Drogheda location. All existing clients will travel to the Meath village on one morning each week to receive treatment. In a statement, the HSE said it “continues to provide a wide range of services for people in addiction in Drogheda and surrounds, including addiction counselling; drug outreach; as well as other individual and group supports.

People wishing to avail of supports in relation to their own or a family member’s drug use should contact the HSE Addiction Service on 041/9843531.” However local Senator Thomas Byrne has called on the HSE “to reverse this decision immediately.” He said: “I am seriously concerned to be told by the HSE that they are moving a methadone clinic into Duleek from Drogheda.

“While I have every sympathy for addicts, Duleek is too small and would not be able to absorb these patients from Drogeda.”

ONE OF Ireland’s top choreographers who is living in Navan is set to return to Eurovision again after his act Ryan Dolan was chosen to represent Ireland in this year’s contest. Founder of the well-known Spotlight Stage School, Stuart O’Connor mentored Ryan Dolan to victory during the live vote on a special Late Late Show.

Singing his own composition ‘Only Love Survives’, Ryan battled it out against four other finalists in the Eurosong 2013 show and topped the vote which was a combination of 50pc public tele-vote and 50pc regional jury vote. The song was co-written by Wez Devine.

Hailing from Strabane in Co. Tyrone, Ryan has been described as one of the most exciting homegrown musical talents to be discovered in Ireland in recent years and his YouTube channel has received over 800,000 hits.

After his win, Ryan said: “I am thrilled to have been chosen to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest. A huge thank you to everyone who voted for the song tonight – I really appreciate it. I’d like to thank my family, friends and my mentor Stuart for all their support over the last few months. It’s such an honour to have been chosen to represent Ireland at Eurovision. I can’t wait to perform in Malmő in May.”

Meantime it’s a return trip for Stuart O’Connor who devised the performance of Jedward’s Waterline at last year’s Eurovision. The Navan resident is the man behind the successful Jedward pantos and all Jedward’s live tours in the last three years. Definitely no stranger to the Eurovision genre, he recently produced and directed ‘The Best of Eurovision Show’ with six previous winners Johnny Logan, Niamh Kavanagh, Linda Martin, Dana, Charlie McGettigan and Paul Harrington. He was also a judge on RTE’s Supercrew contest (to find the best hip hop dancers) and choreographed the highly acclaimed RTE Big Music Week Lipdub YouTube video.

Ahead of the contest, he said: Stuart O’Connor said, “As soon as I discovered I was going to be a mentor I was determined that given the opportunity I would send an Irish singer/songwriter to Malmö

this year. I was delighted to receive a large volume of songs from all around the world but as soon as I heard Only Love Survives I knew this was it - it ticked all the boxes. I immediately set about gathering a full Irish team including backing vocals by Leanne Moore and percussion by Nicky Bailey founder of Extreme Rhythm who has performed with Riverdance and most recently on X Factor with Kelly Clarkson. The result is a modern song with an Irish vibe that will appeal to audiences across Europe.”

The other acts who competed in Eurosong were: Aimée singing Crashing Down, Zoë Alexis Bohorquez singing Fire, Inchequin singing Son Kez/The Last Time and Kasey singing Kiss Me. Eurovision will be held in Malmő, Sweden, in May, with Ireland competing in the first semi-final on Tuesday May 14th. The Eurovision final will take place on Saturday May 18th.

Solo trekker in the wilderness

Navan man to return to Eurovision again

New methadone clinic for Duleek

HE HAS walked for nearly 300km without meeting any other person - Paul Sheils is the solo trekker from Navan that loves disappearing into the wilderness for weeks on end. The Nangle Court resident has navigated his way across Scotland and last year, spent two weeks in the wilds of Lap Land, 300km above the arctic circle.

His lone adventures started in 2000 when he began hill walking which progressed to mountain climbing and honing his navigational skills. His menu is al fresco and he carries what he needs on his back. All food is dehydrated and mostly carbohydrate-based such as pasta. However, his meals are supplemented with fresh berries and fish, if he manages to catch some.

Cooking is all done on an open fire or if in the mountains, on a camp stove. No take-away menu here and all he needs is tightly packed into a 23 kilo bag. Each trip holds its dangers and although he has only seen the markings of bears so far, he did come across an 8ft high moose which thankfully posed him no harm.

If he did come face to face to bear? “All encounters are different and there are several factors that need consideration before you act,” he said. Crossing fast-flowing rivers is another

problem for Paul but he just travels down river until he finds a crossing point or an area where the river is not very deep.

The Navan Racecourse employee is used to company and has many friends so what compels his lone exploits? “It’s a very extreme thing so I wouldn’t ask anyone to go through it. I just think it’s better to go it alone.” He continued: “It’s stress free. You just pitch a tent and lie underneath the stars. You’re totally on your own so you find out a lot about yourself on these trips. Your brain is constantly thinking and coming up with different ideas and scenarios.

“I once walked 200km and only met one other human being during that time.” The 37 year old is engaged and admits both his fiancee and his family worry when he embarks on another adventure. “Mobile phones obviously don’t work so I wear a personal locator beacon on my arm and friends and family can find me at any time using google earth.”

Although he has a wedding to plan, Paul is already putting the stepping stones in place for an expedition next year, in which he hopes to trek 500km north to south in Iceland. Bear Grylls eat your heart out!

The hill Barbers is celebrating its first successful year in business on Navan’s Flower Hill. The owner Keith Shipp, has over 6 years experience as a barber. Starting his career off in Kells, training in a well known barbers there, he went to do different courses in order to gain more experience in the trade.

From there he then went to work in Blanchardstown where he spent time perfecting techniques and learning more about barbering including different cutting and shaving methods. Keith was best known in Navan for the time he spent in Aidan Barrys Barbers where he quickly built up a great reputation and customer base.

The urge to travel saw him spend two years working as a barber in Australia and when he came home he worked in Charlies Barbers in Navan Town Centre. Keith now brings this wealth of experience to The Hill Barbers on Flowerhill, Navan where he opened in March 2012.

The Hill Barber is located near the top of Flower Hill (beside The Bobby Sands Centre).

afTer a frosty start to Saturday morning the sun came out and cleared the way for a wonderful afternoons golf to welcome Lady Captain Yvonne Mc Entee and Captain Seamus Tighe. The Captains arrived to the first tee in buggies draped in the Cork and Roscommon colours representing their respective counties. With over 150 members in attendance and assisted by Lady Vice Captain Sheila Grimes and Vice Captain Pat Kenny the new Captains both hit the perfect tee shots to start 2013 in style.

The Captains also both received a personal letter from one of our most esteemed honorary members. Course designer and 18 time major Champion Jack Nicklaus wished both Yvonne & Seamus the very best of luck for 2013. Following the ceremonies a 9 hole scramble competition took place with the Captains daughter Jessica and her team recording the lowest score of the day. The members then retreated to the clubhouse for lunch and followed by a sing song to ring in the 2013 golfing season.

The team at Killeen Castle would like to wish the Captain and Lady Captain a fantastic 2013 and look forward to working with them throughout the year.

IT WaS a case of food for thought last week when 100 jobs were announced for Navan’s Enterprise Centre. Over the next three years the jobs will be created through a new Navan Food Innovation and Research Centre internship programme which will provide the relevant training and work experience to 33 students and graduates per annum.

The initiative was devised by the Meath County Enterprise Board, Meath Co. Council, Navan Enterprise Centre, Epicom Ireland and Dublin Institute of Technology. Dedicated research space has been assigned to help new food start-ups attain the best shot at access to distribution markets and development of new products. Under the mentorship of Epicom Ireland Ltd, it is envisaged that the facility will become a key national hub for Food Innovation and Research.

The project, which was endorsed by the late Minister Shane McEntee last October, will be initially funded by the Meath Co. Enterprise Board, Meath Co. Council and Navan Enterprise Centre but it is expected to be self-sustaining after three years.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny who is visiting Kells this week stated “The Government is determined to get Ireland working again and the food industry is a big part of our Action Plan for Jobs. I am delighted to see this type of collaboration which can deliver new jobs and opportunities for our young people.

I wish all the best for the extension of Epicom Ireland Ltd and the new Navan Food Innovation and Research Centre as they play their part in Ireland’s economic recovery.”

Best of luck from the Golden Bear for the Killeen Castle Captain and Lady Captain

Three rock bands combined to thrill Kells fans last month when The Pat McManus Band,Sal Vitro and The Hard Rockin Hobos entertained a packed Railway Bar.With Brendan McConnell on lead guitar and Anto Cumiskey on lead vocals/ drums, the local Hobos got proceedings off to a scintillating start with a popular mix of originals and covers.

Sal Vitro certainly lived up to their excellent reputation, having supported Thin Lizzy at the Olympia and delivered a tight original set, with Josh Ashford’s husky voice just one of the many highlights of their performance.

Ex-Mama’s Boys legend, Pat McManus, was most definitely on fire on the night and put on a mesmerising display on lead guitar/violin.Pat explains why he loves playing the smaller venues “I was

originally inspired by playing in venues like Jack’s. It’s what Rock n Roll is all about.I like to be up front and personal,in your face !The last time we played Kells was with Mama’s Boys in the St.Vincent de Paul Theatre back in 1982!We were that popular that we played two gigs on a Sunday ! A matinee for the kids in the afternoon and the regular gig at night ”

The band are still hugely popular across the UK, Ireland and Europe and for anyone in attendance it was very easy to see why.Drogheda’s Marty McDermott on bass guitar and Belfast’s Paul Faloon on drums, joined the Fermanagh maestro on stage and provided a wonderful night’s entertainment.Pauric and Fiona Cole from Kells throughly enjoyed the night with Fiona remarking “I used to follow Gary Moore for years and really think that Pat McManus is every bit as good as Gary was!”

Sensational Gig In Kells

Niamh colliNs has already proved to be an outstanding vocalist in the music industry and last year scooped the top award ,winning£10,000 in a major UK download competition.

Niamh collaborated with Swiss DJ Fred Lilla for “When You Feel” which proved to be a massive global club hit and can seen on You Tube. More recently Niamh was asked to sing with Shay Healy’s Inchequin for the Eurosong competition on RTE.

The Irish-Turkish six-piece band had Ed Darragh as its producer and is a sister of the late Paul Darragh, from The Hill of Tara. Ed has an outstanding track record in the music business and produced RTE’s hugely popular Music programme “Nighthawks” on RTE’s Network 2.

NavaN rockers, The Bogey Boys, are set to rock London with two select dates at The Gipsy Hill Tavern on the 19h & 20th April. The band once had an up and coming group (called U2!!) as their support act, way back in 1980!!

After the huge success of the band’s reunion after 30 years last year, with gigs in Dublin,Waterford and Navan (Swan Lane, Tara na Rí, Rock d Lough and Beggy’s), this time it’s London calling with their first gigs there since their concerts at The Hope and Anchor in Islington, The Marquee and The Rock Garden. The 3 piece feature the amazing Jimmy Smyth on lead guitar, Dosh Nagle(ex-Phil Lynott’s Grand Slam) on bass and Tony Smyth on drums.

Fans of the band can avail of an excellent offer to see them play in London for the first time since the 1980s. Traditional hobbies spark interest in Bailieborough

Navan park ‘left open’ to vandals

Joint Policing Committee

Craft lovers from all over gathered in “Carmel’s Stop and Stitch” to witness a bit of old fashioned spinning done on a spinning wheel on Main Street, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. This brightly coloured shop was filled with noise and chatter as people came to watch a bit of spinning done on a wheel. The lady of the day was Isabella who made working the loom look as easy as setting the table.

The volume of interest on the day went beyond questions about the spinning demonstration; inquiries were made about knitting, sewing, crocheting and patchwork. It seems that these hobbies are coming back into fashion for whatever reasons.

Knitting has recently become the cool thing to do with celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Sharon Stone being seen regularly in Aran jumpers. Money in most household is tighter now days so people really are looking for value for money. One customer said that “I only got back into knitting when I saw Carmel’s shop; it’s been years since I’ve knitted and I forgot how relaxing it can be”. Having something to hand down through generations seems to be one of the reasons why these hobbies are coming back with such bang.

Carmel Shekleton the owner of “Carmel’s Stop and Stitch” has always wanted to own her own shop and when asked why she decided to start up this business she replied “I found myself travelling for a pair of knitting needles and I thought that it

would be great if there was a local shop where I could get all my bits. One thing led to another and here I am today”.

The shop itself is a treat to the senses with hundreds of different colours of wool and a beautiful aroma. It is hoped that regular exhibitions will take place showing the talents and skills of people in the area. The shop opens Tuesday – Saturday from 9:00 to 6:00 for further details contact the shop on: 042-9666866 / [email protected] / http://www.facebook.com/main.street.5811?fref=ts

the oPen gates of Navan’s new 68 acre park are already ‘welcoming’ anti-social behaviour - and the facilty hasn’t even been officially opened yet! Late-night drinking youths are gaining easy access to the facility because the entrance gates are not being locked after dark.

Local residents are now raising concerns that the ‘Blackwater Park’ could be taken over by the wrong element and believe that drug dealing is also occurring at the private location. One local said: “There are gangs drinking down there until all hours in the morning. In fairness, I enjoyed listening to one girl singing ‘Dirty Old Town’ as she had a lovely voice but at 4am, it’s a bit much.”

Others pointed out that a ranger was needed to monitor the growing problem of dog litter in the park as many walkers now have to constantly look where they tread. The concerns were echoed by local Cllr Tommy Reilly who has always highlighted the need for a park warden when the amenity was opened.

He said: “Leaving the gates open and having no security - sure you’re asking for trouble. Over €1m has been spent on the first phase of the park which now has a looped walk and it’s a fabulous facility to have in close proximity to the town.

“I was Mayor of Navan when the park was handed over to the council by Tara Mines and it’s taken 12 years to bring it even to this level. Swarms of people are now

using it for walking. It’s the only such facility for the north of the town and it’s being used in abundance by many families, groups and athletes.”

He continued: “However I’m very worried that the council are leaving the gates open. As well as the anti-social behaviour issues, there’s also the safety issues. “What if some drunken teenager fell into the Blackwater and drowned? Whose responsibility is that?

“In addition, we want to attract families and people to the park but people will stop using the facility if there’s an abundance of dog litter. The council needs to have someone to monitor and fine people for this.”

He concluded: “This could be one of the finest parks in Ireland but the council have already started on the wrong foot with it!,”

The park is to be officially opened by Navan town council in the coming months.

Cllr anton Mc Cabe has been elected the latest chairperson of the Navan Joint Policing Committee (JPC) at the group’s recent AGM. The Labour councillor says he is honored to be chairing this committee as he sees the Joint Policing Committee {JPC} as an integral part of community building. Cllr Mc Cabe adds that the JPC provides significant value to to the workings of the local authorities, the Garda and the community organizations who have representation on the JPC.

“The JPC provides a platform for consultation, where discussion on anti social behavior, crime prevention, and other relevant issues that may arise within the JPC area.” Cllr Mc Cabe says that Navan is now one of the largest towns in the country, and it needs a joint policing structure to compliment the work of the many resident associations/ neighborhood watch groups and community groups throughout the town.

St Patrick’s CS………………………1-12St Mary’s……………………….……2-7

St Patrick’s Classical School, Navan, won the Leinster Colleges’ SFC title for the first time since 2010 when they produced a gutsy performance to defeat reigning provincial and All-Ireland champions St Mary’s, Edenderry, in the final at Cusack Park, Mullingar. The Colm O’Rourke-managed team gave themselves a great chance of victory when retiring level at the interval after playing against the stiff breeze, but they had to pull out all the stops to edge through in a tight and superbly contested second half.

St Mary’s started very positively as Cien McMonagle, Peter Caffrey and McMonagle again got the first three points, but St Patrick’s soon settled and registered the next four points courtesy of Barry Dardis, Niall Lyons, James McEntee and Lyons again to edge into the lead. The Edenderry school, fielding a number of players who play their club football in Meath, were soon back in front when McMonagle goaled, but St Patrick’s then scored 1-2 to hit the front again.Lyons and highly impressive centre-back Niall Kane got the points and in between those scores Niall McCabe – a son of former Meath senior player Mattie – fisted home the goal following a centre from

Declan McGuinness. However, so much of that good work was undone when poor defending allowed Ian McKeown to score St Mary’s second goal and the teams retired level (1-6 to 2-3) at the break. With the benefit of the wind to come the Navan school looked to be in a very strong position, but they failed to push home their advantage in the third quarter. Substitute Robbie McDonnell edged them ahead early in the second half, but St Mary’s scored the next three points to lead by two.To their credit, St Patrick’s battled superbly and restricted St Mary’s to just one more point, while they added five themselves from McDonnell, Lyons, substitute Robbie Keelaghan, Lyons again and Kane.Lyons’ fifth point of the final had edged them ahead by the minimum, but they then missed a golden opportunity to take control when McEntee was fouled four minutes from the end of normal time. A penalty was the decision, but Dardis had his spot kick saved by St Mary’s goalkeeper Conor Hurley. That second point of the game from Kane gave them a two point cushion and they held out to regain the Leinster title.

St Patrick’s CS scorers: N Lyons 0-5; N McCabe 1-0; N Kane, R McDonnell 0-2 each; B Dardis, J McEntee, R Keelaghan 0-1 each.

Meath…………………………………2-11Roscommon…………………………..0-11

Meath resurrected their promotion hopes and eased fears of relegation when they turned in an improved performance to defeat Roscommon in the National Football League Division 3 at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday. Eight days after faltering badly against Cavan at Pairc Tailteann Mick O’Dowd’s players responded positively to earn a rare away victory as two first half goals paved the way to a very welcome success. Meath now have four points from as many outings and with games still to come against Sligo, Antrim and Fermanagh the table has taken on a less worrying appearance.

Backed by the strong wind in the opening period Meath needed to build up a decent lead and those goals, scored by Kevin Reilly and Graham Reilly, steered them in the directing of a 2-6 to 0-3 interval advantage. Team captain Kevin Reilly got the first of them at the end of the opening quarter when his speculative delivery from beyond half-way was carried by the breeze, bounced in front of Roscommon goalkeeper Geoffrey Claffey and ended up in the net.

Substitute Eamon Wallace, who had played for the Meath under-21s against Kildare four days earlier,

made an immediate impact when he set Graham Reilly up for the second goal around the half hour mark and with Cian Ward, Michael Newman (two each), David Larkin and Ciaran Lenehan getting the first half points the Royal County were looking good with that nine point cushion at the break. Roscommon made a positive start to the second half as they reeled off four points in as many minutes, but Ward’s third point settled Meath again. The home side continued to threaten and Donal Keogan was seen to telling effect when the pressure was on the winners’ defence.

The closest Roscommon got to Meath was four points (0-10 to 2-8) after the hard working Peadar Byrne had notched Meath’s second point of the half. Kevin Reilly, Ward (free) and substitute Paddy Gilsenan, with a superb effort, got the Royal County’s remaining points to ease them towards a fully deserved victory.

Meath – P O’Rourke; D Keogan, B Menton, S Curran; C Lenehan (0-1), E Harrington, D Dalton; C Gillespie, K Reilly (1-1); D Larkin (0-1), G Reilly (1-0), P Byrne (0-1); C Ward (0-4), S Bray, M Newman (0-2). Subs – E Wallace, P Gilsenan (0-1), B Meade, B Dillon, J Queeney.
