This is a mix documentary because it contains a range of elements such as interviews, re-creations and archive footage that supports the evidence and the exposition.
Themes & Narrative Structure
This documentary was based on music, music marketing and music awards. The documentary opened with the music awards to show how hard-working people in the music industry are and then went on to show the marketing behind The Bat Out of Hell 2 by Meat Loaf. This shown how Meat Loaf was reinvented himself and how he was remarketed to find old and new fans.
Camera Angles
In this documentary arrange a camera angles are used to portray stars to be more desirable to the audience. The shots range from close ups to zoom shots. In the documentary there is many close-ups of Meat Loaf as he is the star of the documentary. Low angle and panning shots are used to portray how powerful and importantly Meat Loaf is. Wide-angle shots are also used to show the boardroom of music executives. The documentary also follows the main conventions of documentaries for interviews switching sides and having the interviewee look into space.
Sounds
In this documentary like in all other documentaries there is non-diegetic and diegetic sounds throughout. This is done to show what is happening on screen at that time. Non-diegetic sounds are used for example in a boardroom scene and his song is playing in the background over what is going on.
Diegetic sound was used in the interviews and all other scenes where the sound is coming directly from what is on screen.
Editing
In the documentary lots of editing techniques are used this is done to portray meaning and to make the audience feel like they have experienced what is happening on screen. For example slow motion is used to show the passion behind the music video, which is being shown. Also in the interviews there are backdrops used which are super imposed behind the interviewee, by using a blue screen.
Archive Footage
Throughout this documentary was a lot of archive material used showing the making of his music video. Different award ceremonies such as the Brit awards and The Grammys. Featured from these were speeches and performances from each event.
Graphics
Graphics are used throughout this documentary for subtitles/captions and the title sequences. In this documentary the subtitles and captions are quite bold unlike other documentaries where the subtitles and captions are smaller so you don’t get drawn away from what is happening on screen.
