What to do if think you have Dengue Fever?

In Jamaica, up to the week ending October 27,

2012, there were 2,448 reported suspected

dengue cases of which 404 were confirmed,

and 1 death.

An acute viral mosquito-borne infection

found in tropical and sub-tropical

regions. It is spread through the Aedes

aegyptimosquito when the female bites

an infected person and then bites other

people.

Wear clothes that covers the body

Apply mosquito repellant

containing deet.

Preventative Measures to Protect

Sudden, persistent very high fever

Severe headache with pain behind the

eyes

Rash on chest and arms

Symptoms usually last from two to seven

day

Currently, there is no specific treatment for

dengue but early detection and access to

proper medical care lowers fatality rates

below 1%(WHO).

Visit your doctor in order to have the

diagnosis confirmed and a report made

to the Ministry of Health.

Acetaminophen or regular pain

killers can be used to help with

the pain

If you are diagnosed with dengue,

AVOID aspirin as aspirin can lead to

bleeding and thins the blood.

Drink lots of fluids and rest.
