    MEASUREMENTS OF MACEDONIAN MEN.BYMARGARETM. HASLUCK,B.A.,AND G. M.MORANT,D.Sc.

    I. Introduction, by M. M. Haslucla.THE measurements analysed in the following paper were made in 1921-3 inwhat Professor Ripley once called * the "practically unworked" field of South-WestMacedonia. Its extreme boundaries may be given as the River Vardar (the ancientAxios) on the East, the Pindus mountains on the West, Mount Olympus and theThessalo-Macedonian frontier on the South, and Mount Kaimakchalan and theGraeco-Serbian frontier on the North. The whole region was transferred fromTurkish to Greek sovereignty after the Balkan wars of 1912-3, and it has an areaof some seventy square miles.Measurements were made among six different groups of people, who have beencalled respectively Greeks, Vlachs, Christian Bulgars, MohammedanBulgars, Turks, and Greek-speaking Mohammedans. These names divide the groups into Christiansand Mohammedans according to their religion, and into Greeks, Vlachs, Bulgars, and Turks according to their language. The Rumanian patois spoken by the Vlachs(i.e. Wallachians) is meant by the Vlach language. The linguistic touchstone which gave these names was the language spoken athome by the women. The additional language or languages spoken by some womenand many men were ignored as adventitious accomplishments. The three Christiangroups belong to the Eastern or Orthodox church. The vast majority of theMohammedans are Sunnis, only half the small group of Greek-speaking Moham-medans and a very few Turks being Shiahs (of the Bektashi Order of dervishes). The Greek-speaking Mohammedansand the Mohammedan Bulgars are respectivelyGreeks t and Bulgars, who abandoned Christianity for Mohammedanismat leasttwo hundred years ago?. From the linguistic point of view the six groups are thusonly four. The Turks descend from Asiatic Turks who came to Macedonia from AsiaMinor a little before A.D. 1400. Some of these early Turks were cavalry in theservice of Sultan MuradIlI(r. 1360-1389), the Turkish conquerorof Macedonia, andof his son Sultan Bayezid I l (r. 1389-1402), and others were colonists imported bySultan Bayezid with their wives and children to keep down the conquerednatives".
