‘We derive tremendous value from our relationship with AVEVA.’

IPE meets design challenges

AMEC Paragon’s IPE strategy enables safe, efficient andeffective collaboration in an Engineering, Procurementand Construction (EPC) project, across all applications andmultiple locations. Outstanding benefits are achieved.

All projects share certain common design challenges:

• The model must reflect what is actually going to bebuilt. AMEC Paragon ensures this by dynamically linkingthe design model to P&IDs and procurement.

• Document changes must be controlled. AMEC Paragonrequires electronic approvals for all revisions.

• Changes must be reflected across all related documents. At AMEC Paragon, all engineering deliverables are linked, and automatically ‘red-flagged’ when changes are made.

• Information must be readily available to all. Internetcommunication is used extensively and documents arelinked for easy access.

• Fabricated must parts must fit together! AMEC Paragon’sdesign models are fully featured, right down to thesmallest controls and pipe supports.

Marc-Henri Cerar explained: ‘We use the full suite ofAVEVA’s solutions – AVEVA VPE P&ID, VPE, PDMS, VPRM,Review and Laser Model Interface – to address thesechallenges. When used together, the benefits achieved aremuch greater than any single application could deliver.’

‘A team of fine professionals’

Collaboration between AMEC Paragon and AVEVA, Inc.(AVEVA’s Americas operations) has been instrumental inthe success of AMEC Paragon’s IPE strategy. Offshore retrofit project using laserscanning integrated with AVEVA PDMS

Incorporating accurate laser scan data of the existing facilities intothe PDMS model brought substantial quality, cost and timescalebenefits:

• Zero rework. Clash-free, ‘right first time’ design eliminated errors, ensuring that the new items fitted correctly.

• 20% reduction in spool piping field welds. New pipe fabricationsfitted accurately and required less field verification, fit-up and weldout. (The extent of the achievable reduction in field welds on thisproject was limited by the need to use smaller spool pieces; manyprojects can achieve even greater reductions.)

• 50% reduction of field weld man-hours. In addition to the spoolpiping fabrication savings, AMEC Paragon halved the man-hours itwould normally take to verify, fit-up, weld out, perform Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE), and heat-treat the field welds.

• One month of offshore installation time saved. Measurablebenefits in reduced downtime and project costs were achieved.

• 5% material cost savings. Eliminating rework also eliminated thecosts of extra materials required for rework.

• Up to 10% engineering time reduction. Less cost, earliercompletion, more productivity.

• 70% fewer offshore visits. Less cost, earlier completion, less risk.

Offshore project using AVEVA VPE, AVEVAVPRM and AVEVA PDMS integration

Integrating these AVEVA solutions in a structured work process broughtsubstantial gains in project productivity:

• 50% reduction in procurement man-hours for major equipmentpackages. The turnaround time from the release of a MaterialRequisition by engineering to its issue for enquiry was reduced fromweeks to days.

• 90% reduction in procurement man-hours for bulk materialpackages. The integration between PDMS and VPRM made this anextremely efficient work process. Not only were man-hour costsreduced, valuable savings in overall project timescale were alsoachieved.

• 50% reduction in document control man-hours for clienthandover. VPRM’s structured work process streamlined engineeringand vendor documentation processing, complementing AMECParagon’s electronic document management system.

• 95% reduction in reprographic costs. The client handover processwould traditionally take days, and many man-hours, with largereprographic costs. In most cases, AMEC Paragon’s projects transferdocuments in hours, with reduced man-hours and almost noreprographic costs.

• Creation of weight management reports cut from four hours toless than five minutes. The weight management reportingapplication uses data obtained directly from PDMS, which is thenformatted and summarised. Manual creation and management ofspreadsheets is eliminated and the reports are far more detailed, providing weight by location, category, shape or material.

Quantified benefits from Integrated Project Execution

AMEC Paragon’s IPE methodology delivers measurable economic advantages. Two recent projects for a leading oil company illustrate this.
