From Haldi to Mehndi, fro Jay Mala to Kanyadaan andfinally to Bidaai, each of the customs hold immense significance and deep rooted meaning in the Hindu religion. And if we talk about the most touchy, expressive and emotional ritual “Kanyadaan” then very few of us know the connotation behind it. Want to know it in detail? Come, let me take out thecurtain!

Meaning of Kanyadaan

Kanyadaan is formed from two words, “Kanya which means virgin” and “Daan which means donation”. It is the greatest donation in a parent’s lifeand is also measured as an intrinsic part of a Hindu wedding Ceremony. It is performed in conformity to Vedic scriptures. According to Hindu tradition, the groom is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and bride as Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of prosperity and wealth. It is a very religiouslysignificant and tugs at the emotional cord of the bride’s parents who make the ultimate sacrifice by giving away their beloved daughter to another man fora lifetime. In return, the father of the bride asks a promise from the groom to help his daughter achieve three significant goals of the life – Artha, Dharmaand Kama. The ritual of Kanyadaan is considered very auspicious, pious and dutiful to bring fortune and it also atone the bride’s parents of their sins.Kanyadaan takes place just before the Mangalpheras (encircling the holy fire). The ritual begins by giving their daughter’s right hand to the groom’sright hand while reciting sacred verse. After the verses, the father officially gives away all his rights and duties towards his daughter to the groom. Thegroom takes pledge to take care, love, honor and cherish their daughter the same way as she was delighted before.
