Family Wellness

Theatre "All it takes is a little bit of faith and trust"... and DANCING, SINGING, ACTING, HARDWORK and REHEARSAL ... "oh yeah, and a bit of pixie dust." In quotations are the words Peter Pan shares with Wendy, John and Michael explaining how to fly. The bold words are what the Jr. And Sr. High students have been doing for months in preparation of their upcoming productions of Peter Pan and Fiddler On The Roof. The first school show to grace the stage at the Bashaw United Church will be the Jr High's production of Peter Pan. These Shows begin April 22 and 23 at 7:00, with a matinee on April 24 at 2:00. Peter Pan is a Broadway Jr production full of energetic songs, lively dancing and all the familiar characters we know and love: fairies, mermaids, pirates, lost boys, the Darling family, Peter and Tink! The students have been putting in rehearsals after school to bring you their best! Please join us for a journey to Neverland in this wonderful and entertaining family show!! Fiddler On The Roof has long been known in theatre as a classical masterpiece. It is a classic because of the broad, rich characters, the beautifully written score and book, the humour and the heart of relation-ships interwoven within this iconic tale. We have a strong and very talented group of students in the Sr High and it was an opportunity to do a show that would challenge them as performers and bring this in-credible show to the stage. Fiddler is a full length Broadway production with the accompaniment of Robin King on the piano. The Sr High shows are May 13 and 14 at 7:00, with a matinee on May 15 at 2:00. These shows are also at the Bashaw United Church. All show tickets are available at the Bashaw School. Ticket prices are $10 an adult and $5 a student. Please come out and support the students with your laughter and your warm applause. Make theatre an affordable and wonderful "Tradition" for your family!

Another big THANK YOU to Mrs Hodder and the Grade 2 Class at Bashaw School for a great “100th Day Food Bank Challenge”. Each year, on the 100th day of school, the Grade 2s challenge the other grades to collect a donation for the Food Bank. This year, over 1000 items were gathered! Then the Grade 2 class visits BDSS and helps to shelve all the food. When they aren’t shelving, they work on a craft in the “big room”. It’s a great partnership and we are thrilled to have them visit.

Thanks to everyone who generously donated to the 3

Amegas for their Guatemala trip. Money donated will buy at least 5 cook stoves and help to pro-vide bathrooms in some of the houses. We are excited to be going and will have lots to tell

everyone when we return.

Here’s a happy family with their new stove from a previous

mission.

Bashaw’s Childrens Book Bank

Studies have shown that book ownership in childhood enhances both early childhood literacy and later

academic success. Many families find that they have books that their children have outgrown or pub-

lishers and retailers have books that they cannot use. The Book Bank will connect demand and supply

and provides children and families with the tools that they need to develop and build their literacy. The

Book Bank makes book ownership available to all children, regardless of family income. It is our hope

that a visit to the Book Bank will be much like a visit to a favourite bookstore, except that the books are

free of charge.

BASHAW BOOK DRIVE: March 2016

1. Many families don’t know what to do with the children’s books their own kids have out-

grown. A community book drive creates an opportunity to give beloved children’s

books a second life. Families can take pride in knowing that other families throughout

Bashaw and area will cherish this otherwise dormant resource.

2. It’s a great way for families to discuss the idea of resource sharing with others.

3. A fun way to be more environmentally conscious! Participating families help reduce the

number of books that end up in landfill through responsibly recycling the books they/

their families have outgrown.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Children’s books for kids aged birth to 12 years old

Teen or young adult books ages 13- 18 years old

Children’s books printed within the last ten years, so a print date of 2005 - present.

Children’s books in new or gently used condition – no missing covers, torn pages, or

pages with colouring/writing on them.

*A great rule of thumb: if you would gift it to someone, then it’s good enough for our use.

Books can be dropped off at Bashaw Neighbourhood Place!

Monday thru Friday 9:00 – 4:00 p.m.
