Who hasn’t dreamed about walking among the Egyptian pyramids, or soaking in the sun on a beach in Spain, or wandering along the Great Wall of China? Every parent wants to give their children a taste of the world, but the economic reality of international air travel for a family, not to mention hotels, passports and food, makes it tough for most of us to consider except in our daydreams. There is a way to give your children the world – without leaving your living room. How? Host a foreign exchange student from a country you’ve always admired! Fascinated by France? Curious about China? Intrigued by India? By welcoming an international student from one of these countries into your home, you instantly open a portal to a far off land.

“My husband and I have been hosting for the past three years and have enjoyed every minute of it!” said Vicki Odom, an Ayusa host mom from Pearland, Texas. “The various students we’ve had in our home have taught us a great deal about their home countries. The students also love learning about life in Texas and participate in a good deal on community service.”

Foreign exchange students come from all over the world. Ayusa matches host families with students from more than 60 different countries. All high school foreign exchange students are fully insured, bring their own spending money, and are proficient in English – and all high school exchange programs are regulated by the U.S. Department of State.

“We welcome host families of all shapes and sizes – families with young children, families with no children, empty nesters whose children have left home, single parents and non-traditional families,” says Connie Coutu, Regional Manager of Ayusa, a non-profit that promotes global learning and leadership through foreign exchange and study abroad opportunities for high school students. “The key requirements for a host family are to provide a safe and nurturing home environment, genuinely love children, and have a desire to learn more about a different culture.”

Volunteer host families provide foreign exchange students a nurturing environment, three meals a day and a bedroom (either

private or shared with a host sibling of the same gender). Each host family and student is supported by a professionally trained community representative who works with the family and student for the entire program. All interested host families must pass a criminal background check and a home visit by an exchange organization. Interested host families are required to fill out an application, pass a background check and interview with a local exchange program representative in their homes. Once accepted to a program, host families can view profiles of students to find the right match for their family.

Ayusa is currently accepting applications for families to host an exchange student for the 2012 – 2013 school year. For more information about hosting a high school foreign exchange student, please contact Ayusa at 1.888.552.9872 or by visiting the website at www.ayusa.org.

Please help us keep our neighborhood clean and beautiful. All we’re asking you to do is bring in your trash cans after pick-up. They’re supposed to be stored out of view from the street. It might not bother you to see them on the street or in the driveway, but we’re getting complaints from people who might be your neighbors. Please help by taking them in. It’s just once a week……

Another gentle reminder: please take plastic bags when you take your dogs out for a walk. You never know when they might come in handy. It’s only fair to your neighbors.

We offer a service: for FREE where people have their garage sale and have leftovers but dread having to pack up or haul-a-way the things left over of their sale.

The benefit of this service for your properties is:It help keeps the streets clean and neat

Homeowners does not have to put an add on Craigslist (receiving many calls) for strangers to come get items on the curb, taking a chance that people will trash their yards by going through the items they don’t want or taking a chance of someone taking items not to be given-a-way.

After having a garage sale, most people are tired and don’t want to pack the unsold items and finding time to haul it away. (that’s why we do it)

What we do with the items…Keep items from going to the landfills,Clean the items, wash the clothes, make sure the appliances

work then we donate some of the items to people who are in need, and we sell some of the items to help support myself, my daughter and my son.

Should you have further questions, I can be reached by email: lorraine.cook05@gmail, or by phone: 512 388-7696.

Again, thanks!Lorraine Cook

Garage Sale Clean Up A Focus on SUNBURNProtect your skin from our

powerful sunBy: Concentra Urgent Care

Sunburn is caused from over-exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. While the symptoms (such as red skin that is painful to the touch) are usually temporary, the skin damage is often permanent and can cause serious long-term health effects, including skin cancer, pigmentation and premature aging. In addition to the skin, eyes can get burned from sun exposure; sunburned eyes turn red, dry, and painful, and can feel gritty.

Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body’s protective pigment, melanin, to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours.

Sunlight contains an invisible form of radiation called ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV A and possibly UV B can harm skin, connective tissue and increase risk for developing skin cancer. Certain drugs such as some blood pressure medication, antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs increase sensitivity to sunlight and the risk of getting sunburn.

SYMPTOMS The first signs of a sunburn may not appear for a few hours. The

full effect to your skin may not appear for 24 hours or longer. Possible symptoms include: • Red, tender skin that is warm to touch. (1st degree burn)• Blisters that develop hours to days later. (2nd degree burn) • Severe reactions (sometimes called “sun poisoning”), including

fever, chills, nausea, or rash. • Skin peeling on sunburned areas several days after the sunburn.

FIRST AID

• Try taking a cool bath or shower. Or place wet, cold wash cloths on the burn for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day. You can mix baking soda in the water to help relieve the pain. Small children may become easily chilled, so keep the water tepid.

• Apply a soothing lotion to the skin. • Aloe gel is a common household remedy for sunburns. Aloe

contains active compounds that help stop pain and inflammation of the skin.

• Over-the-counter steroid cream can also be applied several times a day.

• Over-the-counter pain medication, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, including aspirin, may be helpful, and are excellent for reducing burn inflammation whereas Tylenol only reduces pain, not the burn itself.

Meet Your HOA Board!

From the pen of Gene R. Bennett:Texas became home at the end of 2004 when I arrived from

North Carolina the same time a cold front roared through and froze the house plants I had carried from my previous home. I am happy to say that life here has been far more positive than that memorable introduction to Texas. This Indiana born lad has taken a shine to this state and has never had a moment of regret for making this area my home.

I had wandered the country and globe for 20 years in the USAF, and then retired in North Carolina where I worked another 23 years as a millwright for a household shingle manufacturer.

I have always enjoyed investing myself in my community and spent more than a decade as a volunteer fireman, first responder, and search and rescue team member. I trained and served in Red Cross disaster relief. I served as a Board Member and volunteer in a North Carolina living history museum which represented the mid-1800’s timeframe. I also served as the President of my local HOA in North Carolina.

My interests in historical preservation have led to my current involvement at Austin’s Pioneer Farms where I am a member of the advisory board and a hands-on volunteer overseeing the agricultural aspects of the farm including the livestock. In addition to that I enjoy gardening and landscaping, wood working, hunting and fishing, and am a firearms enthusiast – especially black powder. I have recently given up many years as an avid motorcyclist. (I have a beautiful low mileage H-D for sale, contact me!)

I have never regretted my choice to purchase a home in the Meadows of Brushy Creek. It is a beautiful area so convenient to everything I need. As a board member of our HOA, and as a private citizen, I am fully invested in doing my part to keep it a vibrant and safe community that will continue to attract residents to make their home here.

Meadows of Brushy Creek

The Texas weather is warming up. Summer is almost here. Pools will soon open and the cool water will be calling your name. You can almost hear your kids laughing and the playing in the pool. Your family deserves to have many Best Day Ever moments in the water this summer. Please do not let those moments be ruined by the sound of a life guard whistle blast or the need to do CPR in order to save your child’s life. Most families love a trip to the swimming pool, the lake or the beach during the summer…but the water can be deadly for a child.

Did you know that drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children between the ages of 1 and 14, with kids under the age of 5 at even higher risk?

Colin Holst’s parents did not know either. Sadly, June 13th marks the 5 year anniversary of his drowning in a public, lifeguarded pool in Austin. Since Colin’s drowning in 2008, Central Texas-based Colin’s Hope has become a nonprofit leader in water safety and drowning prevention.

My name is Alissa Magrum and I am the Executive Director of Colin’s Hope. But I am also a parent to 8 year old Ella. So, from one parent to another, please listen to this message. It is simple but filled with purpose: DROWNING IS PREVENTABLE. YOU can help protect your children. Following a series of simple water safety tips creates multiple layers of protection. These layers WILL keep children safer in and around the water and CAN prevent drownings.

THE FIRST 3 OF THESE TIPS ARE KEY. Practice constant visual supervision. Always assign an adult

“water guardian” whose ONLY responsibility is to watch children who are in, near and around the water. If that water guardian needs to take a break, they must transfer their “watching” duty to another adult.

Learn to swim. Enroll children (and adults too) in formal swim classes. For kids under the age of 4, taking formal swim lessons reduces the risk of drowning by 88%.

Wear life jackets. Children who cannot swim should ALWAYS wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in and around the water.

You can see additional tips, as well as more information on water safety and drowning prevention, on our website at www.colinshope.org..

Each year, Colin’s Hope volunteers stuff and distribute 75,000 water safety packets to families in zip codes that have been targeted due to the high number of near drownings and drownings in recent years. This life saving information along with a Peel Inc. ad campaign, a Reagan National Adverstising billboard campaign and a presence at many community events is helping to raise water safety awareness to prevent children from drowning.

WE ALSO NEED YOUR HELP. PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION with family, friends, neighbors, teachers, babysitters…everyone! We have seen the difference that being aware and being prepared can make. Communities that have received our water safety information in prior years have seen child drownings and near drownings in their areas reduced to zero!

Please visit www.colinshope.org to find out how you can get involved in your own community. Find us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, subscribe to our monthly newsletter or even support our efforts with a donation.

We envision a world where children do not drown. Please share that vision and together we will get there.

Wishing you the SAFEST AND BEST SUMMER EVER,Alissa Magrum Executive Director, Colin’s Hope
