2017 MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Men & Women)

ENTRY FEE: $10 per player

The 2017 Match Play Club Championships for men and women will begin May 3rd. Players will be placed in flight determined by their May 1st handicaps. A player’s “seed position” in a flight will be based on their handicap with the lowest handicaps receiving the lowest “seed” placement. Matches will be played under USGA rules. Players will receive full handicaps with adjustments for players competing from different sets of tees. Only Gold and White tees will be played in the Men’s Match Play Championship. Players 65 years of age and older may play Gold tees while all other players will play the White tee markers. Strokes will be allocated off the lower of the two handicaps in each match. The players “Trend” handicap will be used. Players will be responsible for scheduling their matches. HOWEVER, all matches must be played by a predetermined date. Failure to do so could result in disqualification. USGA protocol of the lower seed making tee time arrangements is waived. MATCH PLAY is the truest test of amateur competition. It is more exciting and therefore more fun than Stoke Play. WHY? Because every hole is a new “Competition” regardless of the previous hole’s score. In MATCH PLAY, anything can happen!

Saturday, May 6

10:00 AM to 3:30 PM Manufacturers TECH REPS from Callaway, Taylor Made and

Srixon/Cleveland will be here for you to try their 2017 golf

products. Unfortunately, PING could not make that date.

Hopefully, that date will be available later. There are, however,

several PING demo iron sets, drivers and fairway clubs available as

demos for you to try.

Golf Course Dress Code Proper dress is required at all times on the golf course for all

Members, guests, and juniors. All male golfers must wear a

shirt with a collar or an acceptable alternative. (T-shirts are

not allowed). Appropriate footwear with soft spikes is

required. The following are not permitted: blue jeans or

denim of any sort or style, cut-off shorts, athletic pants or

shorts, short shorts, or T-shirts, short shirts, or tank tops.

Players lacking proper dress will not be allowed to play, or

use the practice facility. Members are responsible for the

conduct and dress of their children and guests.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We have recently installed a new tournament software

program provided by the VSGA. The new program allows us

to communicate via email for every event we have. We can

send notices, advance pairings & tee times as well as results

to all participants. HOWEVER, to do so we must have your

email address. Please take a moment to either send us an

email with the address you’d like us to use or stop by the golf

shop and give it to us. Help us make your golf experience

better!

MEADOWBROOK COUNTRY CLUB

2017 MEMBER GUEST

FORMAT

• Teams pre-flighted according to handicap using 100%

of the course handicap. 6 teams per flight. Flights

determined by team’s combined course handicap as of

the June 15th revision date.

• Teams will play (5) nine-hole rounds with various stroke

play formats converted to a Stableford Points System.

TEE ASSIGNMENTS

• Players of 64 years of age and younger will play White

Tee markers.

• All players over the age of 65 or whose age plus

handicap total 80 or more, will qualify to play Gold Tee

markers.

• All players over the age of 75 qualify to play Red Tee

markers.

• Prior to determining tournament flights, teams with

partners whose course handicap differential is greater

than 10 strokes will be modified. The higher handicap

will be adjusted downwards to reflect a tournament

maximum differential of 10 strokes. For instance if a

“3” handicap is paired with a “14” handicap, the “14”

handicap will be adjusted to 13 for a combined team

handicap of 16 (3 + 13). This team will be flighted based

off of the team handicap of 16.

• The tournament committee reserves the right to adjust

any handicaps prior to the start of competition.

DAY 1 – FRIDAY, JUNE 23

First 9: Better Ball of the team net (converted to points)

using 100% handicap

Second 9: Captain’s Choice net (converted to points).

Handicap determined by 30% of team’s combined

handicap.

Third 9: Selected Drive/Alternative Stroke (converted to

points) using 30% of team’s combined handicap. Both

players tee off on each hole and then select one ball to

alternate until the hole is complete. The 3rd nine hole round

will have a maximum stroke limit per hole, determined by

the Tournament Committee and reflected on your

scorecard at the time of play.

DAY 2 – SATURDAY, JUNE 24

First 9: Better Ball of the team net (converted to points)

using 100% of each player’s handicap.

Second 9: Combined Net Score (converted to points) of

both players using 80% handicap

Shootout: Selected Drive/Alternative Stroke

The field will be limited to the first 45 teams (9 flights of 3 teams).

After 45 entries are received entries will be accepted when they

are received in increments of 5.

Teams will play 3 nine-hole rounds using the formats mentioned

above. This will allow teams to rotate playing opponents while

competing against their entire flight and not just the team they are

paired with.

Points will be allocated as follows:

Net Bogey = 1 Point

Net Par = 2 Points

Net Birdie = 3 Points

Net Eagle = 5 Points

Net Double Eagle = 7 Points

According to Nathan Summers of the Daily Reflector, this

ECU hall of famer was a two-sport stalwart. Can you guess

who this Meadowbrook Member is?

A Word from our Board President Greetings fellow members,

As you know the responsibilities of GM are being managed by the members of the Executive

Committee (EC). Many of you may wonder why this is. The short answer is cost savings. Members

have repeatedly stressed for the Board to reduce expenses. As explained during the town hall

meeting in February, balancing the Budget this year was difficult even with leaving out the GM salary

and benefits. As this year’s first quarter comes to a close the EC and Board have made several

inroads into improving the Budget situation. This was due in part to a long-term employee resigning

to pursue a new career and by making several personnel changes all resulting in a reduction in the

salary and benefit portions of the Budget. Thanks to the attentiveness of our Office Manager Karen

Howerton, we have also experienced other cost reductions as well. While the 13th Month Dues was

not popular it was necessary to meet our obligation for our Line of Credit payment and balance the

Budget. I am pleased to inform you that the Line of Credit was paid off in March. These actions

coupled with continued monitoring of general expenses in all departments and being blessed with

exceptionally good weather during January, February and some of March we are very close to being

on Budget for the ending of the 1st Quarter.

As you know we historically host a significant number of outside events during the year and they

have been generating about 12 to 14% of our annual gross revenue. Our 501-C-3 tax status limits us

from exceeding 15% of our annual gross revenue from outside events. The Board mandated several

years ago that a Profit & Loss Report be generated for all Club events. For 2016 outside events after

expenses netted in excess of $119,000 making up approximately 14% of the Club’s annual gross

revenue. Membership dues also play an integral role in not only meeting our operational expenses

but the annual gross revenue. Our Membership dues constitute approximately 47% of the total

annual budget. So, it is easy to see why our dues contribute significantly to our year ending gross

revenue and in turn allowing for more outside event revenue. This is one of many reasons why it is

so critical to the Club’s wellbeing to acquire more members. More monthly dues contributions

translate into an increase in our annual gross income. That being said we have added 6 new members

in March.

We are entering that time of year where the Nominating Committee will be seeking candidates for the

2017-2020 class for the Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee this year is chaired by Ken

Hart. Committee members are Gary Larson, Jason Hodges, Karolyn Soyars, Lona Dilday, and “HR”

Sulanke. In order to be eligible for the Board of Directors, you must have been a voting member in

good standing for a minimum of three (3) years and have served on a standing committee for a

period of one (1) year. If you are interested in serving your club, please contact Ken or one of the

committee members or the Club office for a candidate application.

Thanks to all of you the Capital Plan continues to meet expectations and the club continues to

benefit. The new aerator will be put to use on Monday April 3rd and followed later this month with a

new deck mower for the golf course. To date the Capital fee has accrued $120, 752 and expended

$78,508. The Strategic Long Range Planning Committee (SLRPC) has done an outstanding job of

acquiring and controlling costs of items on the Capital Project list. Thanks for diligence and attention

to detail SLRPC.

Kind Regards,

Bernie Cowardin
