Meet the Author

Seated in the above photo is author/illustrator Lynne Barasch whose art and writing are the focus of the current Museum Corner exhibit. On Saturday, January 16th, Ms. Barasch addressed a captive audience of children, teens, parents and grandparents and introduced her newest book, First Come The Zebra. She responded to questions from the audience, met with teens to discuss writing and publishing and signed copies of the book. A reception followed. Surrounding the author are (l-r) Tracy Delgado-LaStella, Coordinator of Youth Services, Deborah Hempe, Youth Services Librarian and program participants.

2009 was another busy year for the Library….again distinguishing itself as the hub of the community with stats to prove it! Borrowers checked out nearly 1,200,000 items; 67,000 patrons of all ages attended programs; more than 1,000 community group meetings were held; and, remarkably, 535,000+ visitors passed through our doors. What you may not realize about the Library is that nearly 70% of our employees are district residents, neighbors serving neighbors – a staff that includes folks ranging in age from 16 to 80+ years. All generations for an all generations library.

As our Library approaches its 54th year of operation, and at the beginning of a new decade, we are proud that our incomparable array of resources, services, programs and collections are up-to-

date and continue to develop as a result of your input, ideas and needs. We have benefited from more than a half century of consistent, enthusiastic support from our community.

During these tough times we hope that the Library will remain the best place in town for you and your family. Here you can learn new skills, meet with a career counselor, join a group, borrow from a vast collection of books, DVDs, CDs and ultimately involve yourself, your babies, teens, parents and grandparents in the life of the Library. Your card is a direct passport to the world of information and entertainment – right at your fingertips. Always remember that the reason we are able to provide all these services is you!

She was instrumental in identifying ways toincorporatetheartsintoalibrarysettingandhassupportedthecreationofarts-relatedactivitiesforteens.DuringtheLibrary’sbuildingproject,shewasakeymemberofitsmanagementandplanning committee. Ms. Breen, who currently serves as theAssistantDirector forHumanResources, iswidely known for avarietyofsuccessfulcollaborationswiththelocalschooldistrictandtheLongIslandMuseum.

BarbaraJordan,The Times of Middle CountryWomanoftheYearinCivicsanda30yearveteranatMCPL,servedasAssistantDirectorof Community Relations for more thana decade. She helped to develop the Middle Country LibraryFoundation which supports the Library’s regional and nationalinitiatives; co-founded theWomen’s EXPO, andassisted in thedevelopment of Family Place Libraries, an initiative that helpslibraries transform into community hubs for early childhoodservices, parent education and family support. For the past20 years, Ms. Jordan led the development of the CommunityResourceDatabaseofLongIsland,recentlytransformedintothe2-1-1 Long Islandcall center.Much to the chagrinof Jordan’sco-workers,communityassociatesandamyriadoffriends,Ms.Jordan retired to embark upon a new chapter in her life. Women of the Year 2009


Congressman Timothy Bishop has secured an earmark of nearly $200,000 for the Middle Country Library Foundation. To be administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration, funding will be used to promote economic development by expanding the training and outreach capacity of the Miller Business Resource Center. The grant will support small business training activities; develop an online portal of specialized business services; increase publicity and marketing efforts; and develop the capacity to better track the utilization of business resources and programs.

Members of the Teen Environmental Club at a workshop on river ecology, sponsored by Motorola and facilitated by the Long Island Science Center, test samples from the Peconic River to assess its quality and study how the environment effects a river. The Teen Environmental Club meets twice monthly to discuss environmental issues and to pursue “green” projects that will make a difference in the world.
