the formula of success

Behind the epic-making success of McLaren cars inCan-Airland U.S.R.R.C. races in recent years is theunique " slipstream " production set-up establishedbetween Bruce McLaren Motor Racing and theRacing Division of Trojan Limited, England. The two operations are entirely separate and com-pletely different, buttheir end products are as identicalas two prototypes, one of which is a mirroredreflection ! For when Bruce has designed, developedand race-proved a car — unbedevilled by productionand marketing problems — we at Trojan reproduce it,exact in every detail to the specification of the originai-all without the hurry, hurry of tomorrow's race, being able to concentrate on a build programmedesigned to produce cars that will take for ourcustomers most if not all of the prizes in the nextseason's racing. To do this we have the resources of nearly fifty yearsof engineering know-how, a new £600,000 factoryclose to what was once the world's largest airport at

Croydon, Surrey, and a team of mechanics and fittersspecially trained in the dedicated craft of race carconstruction. In the Croydon workshops, themselves, there arenow three production lines engaged on the 1969build programme; one —Group VII—M.12 — forthe 1969 Can-Am series, two — Group IV—M6GT —the new GT version of the Can-Am winning car, andthree—Formula A for the U.S.R.R.C. or Formula5000 for European events. Our policy is to sell direct at ex-factory prices todrivers and teams on both sides of the Atlantic whoknow they can rely, not only on a guaranteed S.O.S.spare parts by air service, but also on the technicaladvice and personal help of both the McLaren andTrojan teams. Above all, customers have the confi-dence of owning cars which are not mere production-ised copies of original McLaren developments but,as records for past seasons show, are mystic-mouldsof the prototype and winners in their own right.

maintenance andgeneral instructionsFront Suspension:Lubricate all wishbone bushes with molybdenum di-sulphide grease as required. NOTE.—Do notlubricate the Fabroid joints. The front hubs arepacked with H.M.P. grease on assembly and shouldnot require further attention unless stripped downor there is evidence of spillage. Castrolease B.N.S.grease is recommended. On assembly, care shouldbe taken not to over tighten the shaft inner end nut(50 ft./lb.)

Steering:Lubricate the rack and pinion with molybdenumdisulphide grease. Adjustment to the pinion may bemade by the eccentric pin. To adjust the alignment, slacken trackrod lock nuts, screw rods in or out asrequired, tighten locknuts before checking alignment.Ensure adequate amount of threaded shank of theball joint remains in the track rod.

Rear Suspension:Lubricate all wishbone bushes with molybdenumdisulphide grease as required. NOTE.—Do notlubricate the Fabroid joints. The rear hubs arepacked with H.M.P. grease on assembly and shouldnot require further attention unless stripped downor there is evidence of spillage. Castrolease B.N.S.grease is recommended. On assembly tighten therear shaft inner nut to 90 ft./lb.

Brakes:Use Lockheed hydraulic fluid. (Amber exceedsSAE70RI and SAE70RS). Brake distribution can bevaried by slackening the bias bar lock nuts, turningthe bias bar with a pin in the hole provided (clock-wise, rearward from the right hand side will bias tothe front). The right hand master cylinder operatesthe rear brakes. It is advisable to bleed a front andrear caliper at the same time to ensure a full strokeon the master cylinder.Accelerator:Keep the throttle stop adjusted to coincide with thefull open position of the throttle.

Cooling:Theheadertankshould notbe more than halffullwhencold.Dampers:To increase damping, turn the adjustment knob in aclockwise direction. To adjust ride height, screw thedamper abutments up or down as required.

Spring data: Front, 190 Ib.Rear, 330 Ib.

Engine:Maintain as per appropriate engine sheet.

Transmission:Capacities LG 600 = 6 pts. plus 1 pt. when fitted

suspension dataOn leaving the factory, the suspension will have beenset to the optimum as found during testing.

Front Suspension Settings:Castor 5 °Camber ZeroWheel alignment Zero toe-inDampers 12 clicks on from the off position

Rear Suspension Settings:CamberDampersWheel alignment

Zero16 clicks on from the off positioni" total toe-in. (It is important toensure that the toe-in is V oneach wheel)

Adjustments:

Before commencing any adjustments, the static ladenride height should be arrived at as follows:

Disconnect spring damper units, insert 3" blockunder front facia bulkhead. Insert 3i" block underrear bulkhead.

Front Suspension

To adjust the front wheel camber angle, slacken thelock nut on the top link, remove retaining bolt andadjust joint in or out as required.

NOTE.—As the top link and radius arm form a triangle, any adjustment made in respect of the camber willaffect the castor angle and vice versa. Castor andcamber settings therefore should be carried out inconjunction with each other. A recheck of wheelalignment is necessary should adjustment to castorand camber angles have been made.

Rear Suspension:

To adjust the rear wheel camber angle, slacken thetop ball joint lock nuts; turn the link clockwise oranti-clockwise as required. The adjustment of therear wheel alignment is made by the shortening orlengthening of the trailing arms; since the samemethod is used for adjusting the rear wheel steer, these adjustments should be carried out inconjunc-tion with each other until the optimum setting isobtained.

NOTE.—During this operation, the wheel base mustbe kept constant left to right.

Following any adjustments, the rear wheel alignmentshould be checked again at bump and droop.Should the alignment at bump change from the setat static, the trailing arm lengths should be variedaccordingly. (Example: If, at bump, the rear wheelalignment is found to be £" toe-in, correctionisarrived at by increasing the length of the top trailingarm.) The primary consideration in this context isthat the wheel alignment remains constant fromStatic to Bump.

NOTE.—It is desirable that the toe-in increasesslightly as the wheel moves to the full droop position.

On completion of the above, reconnect the springdamper units and, with the car laden with driver plus12 gallons of fuel evenly distributed between tanks, adjust the spring abutments until the groundclearance of the car is as follows:

3" measured under the front bulkhead.3i" measured under the rear bulkhead.

NOTE.—A final check should be made to ensure thatall lock nuts are tightened and that the threads ofthe ball joints remain within their safety limits.

Whilst tyre pressures remain a matter for individualdrivers, 30 Ib. p.s.i. front and 30 Ib. p.s.i. rear isrecommended for initial testing.
